The Coming King and the Prisoners of Hope
The Coming King and the Prisoners of Hope
Concluding chapter 9 in his verse-by-verse study of the Book of Zechariah (זְכַרְיָה), Brother Gideon Levytam takes up verses 10 to 17 and the return of the King. Verse 9 was fulfilled when Yeshua rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. Verse 10 waits for His return: between the two verses lie some two thousand years. Our people have long spoken of two Messiahs, one who suffers and one who reigns. There is only one Messiah, and He comes twice. He came once to die for the sin of the world. He is coming again to reign. In His kingdom the instruments of war will be cut off. He will speak peace, shalom (שָׁלוֹם), to the nations, and swords will be beaten into plowshares (Isaiah 2:4). His rule will reach from sea to sea, to the ends of the earth.
Israel's restoration rests on the blood of the covenant, not on her own righteousness. The old sacrifices could only cover sin; the blood of the Messiah takes it away (Jeremiah 31:31). Zechariah calls Israel prisoners of hope: captives still, but captives with God's promise. The LORD Himself will defend His people and save them in that day as His own flock. Israel will see her King at last and say: how great is His goodness, and how great His beauty. Everyone who receives Him can say the same now, in this day of grace.

Well, we want to say shalom and welcome everyone to the Bible classes of the Holy Scriptures in Israel. We are so blessed to be able to open the Word of God and to be under the sound of the Word of God. We pray that the Lord will bless us and help us as we study together the Word of God. We We are in the prophet Zechariah, in Hebrew, Zechariah. And we are in chapter 9, in the second half of chapter 9. Hopefully you have a Bible, you have the Word of God open, and so we can follow me as I'm reading, and then we will trust to finish Zechariah chapter 9 in this meeting today.
Let's just ask the Lord, first of all, to bless the meeting. And so, our God and our Father, thank you for your love. Thank you for your grace. Thank you for Yeshua, Jesus the Messiah. Thank you that we can say, here am I, Hineni. Here am I. I'm here to serve you. And oh, we thank you for your word. And above all, we thank you for Yeshua, Jesus, the Messiah of Israel, and the Savior of this world. Bless your word to us today, we pray in his precious name. Amen. Amen. And so, beloved brothers and sisters, turn with me to the prophet Zechariah. We are going to read in Zechariah chapter 9.
And we will read from verse 9. Our portion is really from verse 10 onward. But we'll read from verse 9. Now again, Zechariah received a word from the Lord, and he's speaking to the remnant of Israel that returned from Bavell at about 490 BC. And he's saying to them, Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Yerushalayim! Behold, thy king cometh unto thee he is just, and having salvation lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a cold the fall of an ass. And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace, shalom, unto the heathen, and his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.
As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water. Turn you to the stronghold, ye prisoners of hope. Even today, do I declare that I will render double unto thee, when I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mighty man. And the Lord shall be seen over them, and his arrows shall go forth as lightning, and the Lord God shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwind of the south.
The Lord of hosts shall defend them, and they shall devour and subdue with sling stones, and they shall drink and make a noise a noise as through wine and they shall be filled like bowls and as the corners of the waters and the Lord their God shall serve them in that day as the flock of his people for they shall be as the stones of a crown lifted up as an enzyme upon his land and the final verse is verse 17 fear for how great is his goodness and how great is his beauty corn shall make the young man cheerful and a new wine the maids and I'm stopping here beloved brothers and sisters in verse 17 of Zechariah chapter 9 now these verses many of these verses from this ninth chapter are not easy to grasp and yet at the same time we learn here from this prophecy of Zechariah.
Whom he received from the Lord Zechariah began his preaching to the returned remnant of Israel at about 520 BC he preached much longer than Haggai and he was for a longer time, longer period of time was ministering to the returned remnant of Israel and giving them a hope assuring them that God is intending to restore the nation of Israel back to himself and to bring them into these future glorious days of the kingdom age when the Messiah will come and will rule and reign over the nation of Israel. These promises were given from God to the people of Israel already long before. If you remember that he had already promised to bring the seed of the woman already when sin came into this world.
He promised to give to Abraham a seed that will come already later on when Abraham was called by the Lord to be the father of the nation of Israel and the nations of the world. He promised this to Yitzhak, to Yaakov and to the twelve sons of Israel. And he promised this to the prophets of Israel that one day will come and the Messiah will come and he will restore the nation of Israel and ultimately will establish a kingdom where he will rule, the Messiah will rule as King of Kings and Lord of lords. But also we have learned that Israel, because of Israel's disobedience, God had to remove Israel from the land and the Babylonian came and they took the nation of Israel.
The Assyrians came first, they took the northern kingdom, the Babylonians came later and took the southern kingdom, and the Jewish people and all the nation of Israel were scattered until he restored them back to the promised land, after 70 years in the land of Babel. And just to remind you, in the land of Babel, the Jewish people said, and they cried by the river of Babylon, There we wept as we remember Zion. There they that took us captive said unto us, Sing unto us one of Zion's songs. And they said, How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? And it was there that they said, If I forget thee, Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.
This is Psalm 137, beloved brothers and sisters. Well, now they are back in the land. And Zechariah was raised by God to encourage the remnant of Judah and Israel to be encouraged. The temple has been built, but yet there is opposition from without. And so, Zechariah received from the Lord to give to Israel these eight visions, if you remember, that he gave it to them in the first six chapters. Then in chapter 7 and chapter 8, Zechariah presented before Israel things concerning fasting. Should I fast? Should I keep the fasting of the destruction of the temple? And so on and so on. And Zechariah, by the word of the Lord, remind them that many times they fasted not with the right attitude.
It was not for the Lord many times. And he reminded them to the people of Israel. But now in these last chapters, beloved brothers and sisters, and you can see in chapter 7 and chapter 8 that he challenged Israel concerning fasting, but now from chapter 9 all the way to the end of the book of Zechariah, God gives Israel the promise of the coming of the millennial kingdom and he's presenting this before the nation of Israel through these two burdens burden number one from verses chapter 9 verse 1 to 11 verse 17 and burden number two from chapter 12 to chapter 14 this burden began as we have begun in in our last meeting in chapter 9 and verse one the burden of the word of the Lord in the land of hadrach this is Syria and the burden in Hebrew it is massa massa is a heavy load that you have on you and God have this load against the enemies of Israel that brought upon them must a much a discouragement and opposition and he's promising to Israel that he will ultimately deal with the nation that oppose Israel and you you remember.
We covered the first nine verses where he was speaking about Damascus and Tyre and Sidon and he was speaking about Ashkelon and Azar and Ekron and Ashdod and Philistine all the first seven verses the Lord was speaking about the fact that he will ultimately he will judge these nations in their time in their earlier days in the days that they kind of follow the time of Zechariah and sure enough we have learned that in the first eight verses he was speaking about the Alexander the great prophetically he's telling to Israel about a man that will rise by the name of Alexander the great he doesn't give the name here but he will say that someone will rise and this person that will rise will be the one that will take Tyre he will take Sidon he will take Hamad he will take Damascus he will take Ashkelon Gaza Ekron and Ashdod and he will ultimately take the Philistine And that tells us, it speaks about the Grecian Empire that will take, will rule during those days.
After the Persian Empire will come to an end. And we have covered in verses 8 and verse 9 that ultimately God says that even though Alexander the Great at about 332 will take all these nations and people. Yet when it comes to the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, he will let it be. He will allow the Jewish people to control the city of Jerusalem and the priests to continue on during these days to run their life in their faith and their belief. It says in verse 8 that I will encamp around mine house because of the army. This is the army of Alexander the Great. Because of him, that's Alexander, because of him that passes by and because of him that returns.
Alexander was returning from Ashdod, from Azaf, from the Philistines, and he was coming towards Jerusalem, and God says, I will not allow him to take over the city of Jerusalem. And the history tells us exactly what happened, and we read to you some of these events that took place in Jewish history how Alexander allowed the Jewish people to continue to minister in their temple and to keep on their service but notice then we ended up in verse 8 that no oppressor shall pass through them anymore for now have I seen with mine eyes in other words God said that there will come a day where no oppressor will oppress the nation of Israel and he's taking the remnant of Israel to the future restoration of the nation of Israel.
Well from there on in chapter 9 verse 9 to the end of the chapter he's now speaking about the coming of the king of. Israel you see the king the him here in verse 8 is the king of Greece which is Alexander the great by the way the name Greece is mentioned in verse 13 where it says um and raised up thy sons or zions against thy sons or Greece you notice yavan Greece is mentioned here in this chapter beloved brothers and sisters so he was speaking about the rising of the Grecian king and what the Greeks will do at about 332 bc and onward but now he's shifting and he's going now to speak about the king of the Jews the Messiah himself and so in verse 9 we have also covered that in verse 9 he gives to Israel a promise of Israel's king the Messiah and that king according to verse 9 and 10 will come twice he will come once in humility he will come once to die but he will come the second time to rule and to reign and we have covered verse 9 in our previous meeting rejoice greatly O daughter of Zion shout O daughter of Jerusalem behold thy king cometh.
Not the Grecian king now but thy king Jerusalem thy king Zion and how he will come number one he is just righteous tzaddik secondly having salvation he will provide Yeshua salvation you shall call his name Yeshua Jesus for he shall save his people from their sins and thirdly notice it says he is lowly riding upon an earth and upon a cold the fall of an earth he's coming in humility and we read Matthew chapter 21 which is the fulfillment of the first coming of the Messiah the Lord Yeshua Jesus the Messiah who came in his first coming in humility of whom we read in Matthew 21 and verse 9 and a multitude I'll read verse 5 Matthew 21 5 and he says tell ye the daughter of Zion behold thy king cometh unto thee he is sitting upon anence a cold fall of anence fulfilling Zechariah 9 9 it says in verse 9 the multitude went before that followed Christ saying Hoshana to the son of David blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord Hoshana in the highest.
But while the multitude was saying Hoshana save now the spiritual leaders of Israel didn't accept Yeshua at his first coming and so exactly as it was predicted in verse 9 he came the just one in order to die for the unjust, in order to bring us to God. And so that will happen. Although the king came, the king of the Jews, where is he that was born, the king of the Jews? The Magi said, on the cross, on the tree, there was a sign saying, this is Yeshua, the king of the Jews. But he came to die he was despised and rejected of men he was a man of sorrow that was acquainted with grief all we like sheep have gone astray we have turned everyone to his own way but the Lord laid upon him the iniquities of us all he says I came not to do my own will but the will of him that sent me and we read Philippians chapter 2 and you remember beloved brothers and sisters as we read Philippians chapter 2 we point to what the apostle Shaul Paul said let this mind be in you which was also in the Messiah Jesus who being in the form of God thought it not robbery to be equal with God but made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of man and being found in a fashion as a man he humbled himself and became obedient unto death even the death of the cross and surely he died for the sin of this world on that shameful cross he cried it is finished.
God was satisfied with his work and now beloved brothers and sisters as Zechariah was predicting this remember in the first eight verses he was speaking about the immediate days that will follow the days of the remnant of Israel he took them about 100 years or so later on but once he turning to verse 9 onward he's speaking about the far future that happened a few years even later at about 5 or 6 BC when the Messiah came at about 30 AD when the Messiah Yeshua died on the Roman cross but you see he continues on and he's going to speak about far future beyond the church age in which you and I live in today.
And as we read Zechariah 9, verse 9 and 10, you will see that there is some 2,000 years that pass by between verse 9 and verse 10. In verse 10 we read, And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle ball shall be cut off, And he, who is he? The king, of verse 9, he the king shall speak peace unto the heathen, unto the nations. And notice that it says that his dominion shall be from sea to sea and from the river even to the end of the earth. Now this is fascinating. In other words, Zechariah speaking forth to the remnant of Israel concerning the coming of the Redeemer, the Messiah, who will come in a future day.
And while we read these verses together, we learn that there is a Scripture give us the law of double reference. It is a principle that we learn here that while it has an immediate reference the first part of these two verses the second part of these verses takes us all the way to the second coming of the Messiah many time our Jewish people teach that there are two messiahs the first Messiah they call him Messiah ben Yosef a suffering Messiah and the second Messiah they call him Messiah Mashiach ben David the son of David but there are no two messiahs there's only one Messiah there's only one Mashiach one Christ one anointed one who would come twice he would come once in order to die sin has to be paid for what shall wash away my sin how can a man be justified with God for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God the wages of sin is death but God wanted a people for himself a redeemed people well someone had to pay for the sin of this world so the Messiah came the king of Israel he came at his first coming he was rejected he is still rejected.
By the vast majority of the world today during this church age praise God that the gospel goes out to all the nations of the world and many come to know Yeshua as their Messiah, Lord and Savior and the assembly, the ecclesia is being built Jews and Gentiles united together in the body of Christ the body of Mashiach but that day will come to an end when the rapture will take place and we will meet him at the air and then the tribulation period will come. And at the end of the tribulation period, the Messiah will come at his second coming and he will rule and reign over this world.
Today, beloved brothers and sisters, look what's going on in the world around us. God is rejected. The Messiah is rejected. The best of men, Kings, Princes, presidents, prime ministers. Look at the mess that is going on in this world. The world is longing for someone to come to rule and reign in righteousness. And that's why we did read in verse 9, Behold, thy king come. Israel, your king Zion, your king Jerusalem is coming. He is just. He is just. And then he is also having salvation, he came to provide Yeshua salvation. But he is coming in humility, knowing that he will be rejected, despised and ultimately be placed on a tree, on a cross to become a sacrifice.
But Zechariah gives the promise that he will come again. And you know, the Lord Yeshua did die. And he paid for the sin of this world. But he's coming again. And so in verse 10 he says, notice that what the Lord is promising. There are three things that we learn here concerning the second coming of the Messiah. When Israel and the city of Jerusalem will no longer be at war. There are three things that we learn from verse 10. Number one, I will cut off, notice that, I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle ball shall be cut off.
In other words, notice, God will remove completely the instruments of war. He will cut off the chariots. He will cut off the horse from Jerusalem. He will cut off the battle bow. No more wars. Turn with me for a moment to Isaiah chapter 2. Isaiah chapter 2. This is a beautiful verse. In the prophecy of Isaiah when God is calling Israel to return to him and he says listen to this Isaiah chapter 2 and it says in verse 2 and it shall come to pass in the last days that the mountains of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains and shall be exalted above the hills and all nations shall flow into it and many people shall go and say come and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord to the house of the God of Jacob and he will teach us of his ways and we will walk in his path for out of Zion shall go forth the law and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem line in verse 4 he says listen he shall judge among the nations and they shall beat listen to this they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks nation shall not lift up sword against nation neither shall they learn war anymore.
Beloved brothers and sisters the promise is that there is a day coming in which that king that is coming will be ruling and reigning over this world and Israel the nation and all the world will experience a time that is a time of blessing no longer any fighting any conflicts anymore just turn with me to the prophet Ezekiel also please yehezkel Ezekiel chapter 37 notice that Ezekiel chapter 37 i'm just going to read one or two verses there 15 16 and 17 the word of the Lord came again unto me saying moreover thou son of men take thee one stick and write upon it for Judah and for the children of Israel his companion then take another stick and write upon it Joseph the stick of Ephraim for all the house of Israel his companion and notice that and join them one to one one to another into one stick and they shall become one in thine hands.
God is going to unite the nation of Israel and there will be no. Longer conflict in the future day. This is what Zechariah is speaking concerning the future day when Israel and the world will no longer have any conflict even among themselves. Even among themselves. After all, Israel was divided into two kingdoms. The north, Israel. The south, Yehuda. And the conflict between the nation of Israel among themselves continues on. Even today. But it will come to an end. When the king, Messiah, will come in the second coming. Notice the second thing that we have here in this verse 10. Not only that there will be unity, nations of the world will have shalom.
There will be peace. Can you imagine, beloved brothers and sisters, when there will be peace here in this world? When the Lord Jesus the Messiah will come, notice he says in verse 10, and he shall speak peace. And to the heathen, the nations will enjoy peace, you know, today in the days in which we live in, everywhere you open the radio, you open the internet, you listen to the television, you watch on the internet, whatever, wherever you look around, there's constant wars among nations. Every way you look, every way you hear, there's constant conflict. But you see, when Yeshua, when the Messiah will come, when the King will come, who came once at his first coming to suffer and to die, when he will come again as a ruler, as a King of Kings and Lord of lords, he will speak Shalom, not only to Israel, but to all the nations of the world.
As we read in Isaiah chapter 2, there will be no longer conflict. They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. What a wonderful day that will be in these days, even as we speak this day. Many nations are training and many soldiers are preparing themselves, developing all kinds of ammunition. All kinds of rockets are being shot from one country to another. The wars go on. Many lose life. Many suffer loss. Many beloved brothers and sisters and dear friends suffering because the ruler, the Messiah, is not here as yet.
You see, verse 10 of Zechariah chapter 9 could not apply to the first coming of the Messiah. It can only apply to the second coming of the Messiah. Because the Messiah, Yeshua, Jesus, came already once some 2,000 years ago. He died on a shameful Roman cross. He was buried and He rose on the third day. He ascended into heaven. He sent the Holy Spirit of God. He formed the body of Messiah, the body of Christ, where Jewish and Gentile believers are united together in the body of Messiah. He's building the assembly, the ecclesia, the church. But that is not yet the end, because the church will come to an end, the church age.
And then there will be terrible days here in this world, the tribulation period. In Hebrew it is called Sarat Yaakov, where Yaakov will have to go through terrible days and the world will experience sufferings and troublous times. But at the end of these terrible days, the Messiah, Yeshua, will come at His second coming. And there will be, number one, there will be no more fighting. The world will enjoy shalom, peace. But notice also what it says, the third part of verse 10. That king that was once rejected he will have a universal rule notice that it says in verse 10 and it says and he will speak peace unto the heathen and notice the third thing it says his dominion his dominion the Hebrew word here in verse 10 beloved brothers and sister in Hebrew he is going to rule his dominion he will rule his dominion will be notice that from sea to sea and from the river even unto the end of the earth in other words beloved brothers and sisters he will be the king of Kings and Lord of Lord melech ha-melachim ve'adon ha-adonim in fact I would like to read you a verse or two from the word of God if you just turn with me once again to Isaiah chapter 11 in Isaiah chapter 11 the same prophet Isaiah is speaking about the second coming of the Messiah how he is a descendant of David and we read in verse 1 and there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse and a branch shall grow out of his roots.
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him this is King Messiah and notice he said the spirit of wisdom and understanding the spirit of counsel and might and the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord and he shall make him of a quick understanding and the fear of the Lord, and he shall listen to this, he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears, but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth, and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
Verse 5 says, and righteousness shall be the girdle of his loyens and faithfulness the girdle of his reign. Again, righteousness. Behold thy king cometh, O Zion. He is just, he is righteous. You see, all of us are unrighteous by nature. But the righteous one will come to rule and to reign over this world. Listen to another verse in the in the book of Psalm the second Psalm Psalm chapter 2 in verses 8 onwards Psalm 2 and verse 8 we read listen to this he says in verse 8 ask of me this is God the father he's speaking to God the son the Messiah ask of me and i shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession thou shalt break them with a rod of iron thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel ask of me and I will give thee the heathen for thine inheritance the father is speaking to the son the Messiah is spoken by the father concerning the future day let me just read one or two more verses as we are in the Psalm go to the Psalm again and notice this Psalm 72 Psalm 72 and there we read in verses 8 to 11 it says in verse 8 he shall have dominion also from the from sea to sea.
And from river unto the end of the earth they shall they that dwell in the wilderness shall shall bow before him and his enemies shall lick the dust verse 11 all Kings shall fall down before him all nations shall serve him who is that him according to verse 1 give the king thy judgment, O God. While it is speaking in the immediate context about King Shlomo Solomon, but prophetically it's speaking about the Messiah because King Solomon failed, sinned before the Lord. But the Messiah will have dominion also from sea to sea and from rivers to river even unto the end of the earth wonderful day that will come i think we should read just one more verse about that if you turn to Revelation chapter 19 concerning the second coming of the Messiah listen to what Yohanan John the apostle received the Revelation from the Lord Yeshua the Messiah concerning the second coming of the Messiah in chapter 19 from verse 11 we read about the second coming of the Messiah at the end of the tribulation and I saw heavens open and.
Behold a white horse and he that sat upon he was called faithful and true and in righteousness he does judge and make war and I just go all the way down to verse 16 and he has in his on his vesture and on his thigh the name written king of Kings and Lord of Lord melech ha-melachim that's the second coming of the Messiah that Zechariah presents before the remnant of Israel by the word of the Lord or yes the Grecian king of Alexander yes he defeated the people of Damascus and Hamat and Tyrus and Sidon and Tyre and Ashkelon and Gaza and Ekon and Ashdod and the Philistine but he died because of his own sinfulness and wickedness but your king is going to come the Messiah of Israel Zion's king Jerusalem king he will be the one that will rule as king of Kings and Lord of lords and he will have dominion from sea even to sea and from river even unto the end of the earth so now after he has said this to the remnant of Israel.
In verses 11 to the end of the chapter to verse 17 he is promising notice that God the Lord is promising the nation of Israel a promising salvation to Israel that is based upon the covenant that he made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and so we read in verse 11 Israel's salvation you see Israel today sadly is seeking to be justified on the basis of keeping the law on the basis of keeping rabbinical tradition but the Scripture teaches us that in the future when Israel will turn to the Lord the base upon which God will accept them and they will be redeemed and delivered and restored to him will be based upon the blood covenant that God made.
And so in verse 11, Israel's salvation is based upon the blood covenant. As for thee, Israel, as he called them in verse 9, Zion, in verse 9, Jerusalem, as for you, Tzion, as for you, Jerusalem, he's saying, also by the blood of thy covenant have I set forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water. In other words, I'm going to bring you out of the pit on the basis of the blood of thy covenant. And beloved brothers and sisters, This is so important to understand. Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin. It is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
Every sacrifice that in days of old were offered on the altar of the people of Israel given by God, it was offered as appointing us to the coming of the Messiah. Lambs were killed blood was shed rams were killed blood was shed all the blood of bulls and goats could never take away sin they only covered temporarily to cover temporarily the sins of the nation and so their sins were forgiven about torment was made but sins were never taken away they were only taken away when the Messiah came where we read in John 1 behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of this world and so in every generation blood had to be shed in order for atonement to be made but you see beloved brothers and sisters it is the blood of the covenant that God has made through the shed blood of our Lord Yeshua, Jesus, the Messiah, that on that basis, Israel will ultimately be restored to the Lord.
Let me just show you something. If you go back to Genesis chapter 15, where the Abrahamic covenant was established, there we read in Genesis chapter 15 verse 18 onward that God made a covenant with Abraham and it was on a basis of a shed blood notice that verse 18 we read it says in verse 18 and in the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram you notice that saying unto thy seed have I given this land from the river of Egypt unto the great river of the river of Euphrates. Well, God made a covenant with Abraham. This is the Abrahamic covenant. But you see, if you read a little bit earlier, you will notice that Abraham brought animals.
He had to cut them, to divide them, and blood had to be shed. Notice what it says in verse 10. And he took unto him all these, and he divided them in the midst, and he laid them each piece against another. And he's speaking about the birds as well. Well, he cut them. Blood had to be shed. You see, atonement had to be made. God commanded Abraham to bring these animals, and God walked in the midst of this, and he made a covenant. He made a promise to Abraham. He caused him to have a deep sleep. And then we read that the Lord walked between and he ultimately made a covenant with Abraham.
And notice that again, verse 18. I will just read verse 16, first of all. But in the fourth generation, they shall come with either again for the iniquity of the Amorite was not yet full and it came to pass when the sun came down and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram saying unto thy seed have I given this land and from the river of Egypt onto the river the great river of the river of the euphrates and he promised him this is the Abrahamic covenant was based upon the blood that was shed and in every generation it was a covenant was made on the basis of the shed blood in fact i want to read one more verse in the prophet Jeremiah chapter 31 Jeremiah chapter 31 this is the new covenant the brit hadashah the new covenant God made in which you and i came under the blessing of this new covenant in chapter 31 we do read beloved brothers and sisters if you notice how important it is the various covenants that God made with humanity we have the idani covenant the Adamic covenant the noai covenant the Abrahamic covenant the mosaic covenant the land covenant the davidic covenant and of course the new covenant from.
Jeremiah chapter 31 verse 31 to verse 37 but i'm just going to read just this one or two verses verse 31 behold the day come says the Lord that i will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, which my covenant they broke, they break. Although I was a husband unto them, says the Lord, but this should be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord.
I will put my law in their inward parts and I will write it in their hearts and I will be their God and they shall be my people what do you think about this new covenant it was the Lord Jesus the Messiah in Luke chapter 22 when he took the cup and he says this is the blood representing the blood of the new covenant that is in my blood the Lord Yeshua the Messiah had to die just like these animals in days of old have died while the animals of old only pointed to the Messiah and never removed sin, only covered sin temporarily. When the Messiah, Jesus, Yeshua came, he took away the sin of this world.
And so the restoration of the nation of Israel, according to verse 11, will be based upon the new covenant, upon the blood atonement of the Lord Yeshua, the Messiah, they will be justified and reconciled, not on the basis of their own righteousness, but on the basis of the righteousness of God. The righteousness of God. And now in verse 12, Israel is a nation, is God's firstborn. Israel is my son, God said to Pharaoh. And so in verse 12, we read, turn you the stonehold, ye prisoners of hope, even today do I declare, I will render double unto thee. He continued in verse 13, and he's saying, when I have bent Judah for me, Fill the boar with the flame, and raise up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of the mighty man.
You see what we read, beloved brothers and sisters, that because Israel was the firstborn son, Israel received double portion of punishment. That's why the firstborn usually receive the double portion of blessing, but also the double portion of punishment. And that's why we read here in this verse 12, I will render double unto thee. In other words, Israel was disciplined by God much more than any other nation. Why? Because Israel is the firstborn as a nation, the Son of God, as a nation. Listen to what we read in Isaiah chapter 40. It says in verse 1 and 2, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak comfortably to Jerusalem and cry unto her.
That her warfare is accomplished, and her iniquity is pardoned, for she has received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins. You know, beloved brothers and sisters, according to the book of Exodus and Deuteronomy, the firstborn son received double blessing. But at the same time, when the firstborn is being disciplined, he receives double punishment. And so we learn here that the Lord said in verse 12 of Zechariah, You, I render unto you double. I render unto Israel as the firstborn double punishment. But it will be removed. Because on the basis of the new covenant, on the basis of the Abrahamic covenant. I will bring you forth out of a pit where there was no water, and I will restore you unto myself.
He continued, and notice what he said. The Lord himself will defeat the enemies of Israel, according to verse 13 and verse 14. It says, when I have bent Judah for me to fill the bow with the flame. In other words, you have the bow and the arrow. And it says, I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with the flame. And I will raise up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as a sword of the mighty men. In other words, God will use Israel to defeat their enemies. But it will be the Lord himself that will be ruling over them and leading the nation.
Verse 14, the Lord shall be seen over them and his arrow shall go forth as a lightning and the Lord God shall blow the trumpet and shall go with whirlwind of his of the south in other words the Lord will lead the nation of Israel in the future they ultimately to defeat their enemies and there will be a nation that will be led by the Lord and not led away from the Lord in the days of restoration and now quickly as we are going to conclude here in verses 15 and 16 and 17 Jehovah of all shall defend the nation you know i'm often so overwhelmed with those verses that we read in the word of God.
He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumbers nor sleep. Psalm 121 and verse 4. It was on my mind just recently so much because Satan and those that follow him seek to do away with the nation of Israel. And yet God made a promise that he will not slumber nor sleep because he has a purpose of blessing for the world through the nation of Israel. Not only that through the nation of Israel the Messiah came at his first coming, but through the nation of Israel blessing will flow to the world at the second coming of the Messiah. This is the divine design. This is the plan of God.
This is him as a sovereign God who decided to do this for this world. The church today we are called to lead people out of this world to preach the message of the gospel and to bring people to be part of the assembly the heavenly company that belong to the Lord in heaven but Israel is a nation that his earthly people are called to be a restored nation and through them blessing will flow to the nations of the world and so we read in verse 15 the Lord of hosts notice the word again, Yehovah Tzevaot, the Lord of hosts, he shall defend them and they shall devour and they shall subdue with sling and stone and they shall drink and make a noise as through wine and they shall be filled like bowls and as the corners of the altar.
In verse 16, Jehovah will save Israel in that day and the Lord their God shall save them in that day as the the flock of his people for they for they shall be as the stones of a crown of a crown lifted up as an. Ensign upon his land in other words beloved brothers and sisters the Lord is intending to restore the nation of Israel and ultimately use them to be a blessing to this world it says here and I'm repeating verse 16 the Lord their God shall save them in that day whenever you read this expression in that days has a reference to the tribulation and the ultimate outcome of the the tribulation days and the messianic kingdom the millennial age the thousand years reign of the Messiah in that day in that day as a flock of his people and they shall be as the stone of the crown lifted up as an enzyme upon his land just turn to chapter 11 for a moment and in verse 11 it says and it was broken in that day notice this expression in that day and saw the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the Lord.
Again and again, using that expression in that day. Chapter 12, notice that in verse 3, it says, and in that day I will make Jerusalem a burden, some stone. In verse 4, in that day, saith the Lord, I will smite every horse with astonishment. Again and again, it has a reference to that day in connection with the tribulation period and the ultimate messianic kingdom. And then finally, and we are going to conclude chapter 9 today, in verse 17, Israel will acknowledge God's goodness and Israel will acknowledge God's beauty it says in verse 17 for how great they will say is his goodness and how great is his beauty who is the one that is so good who is the one that is so beautiful well it is the one of whom we read in verse 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion.
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, thy king cometh. He comes unto you. He's a just person. He's just tzaddik and having salvation. Venosha. He's lowly and riding upon an ace and upon a cold, the fall of an ace. Israel will ultimately acknowledge the King Messiah. Number one, His goodness. And number two, His beauty. Beloved brothers and sisters, just in conclusion, we can all say how good God is to us. How good it is to know the Lord and to recognize what He has done for us through the person of the Lord, Yeshua, Jesus, the Messiah. As Psalm 100 says in verse 5, it says, For the Lord is good, and His mercy is everlasting, and His truth is enduring to all generations.
The Lord is good. And what about His beauty? You see, in the first coming of the Messiah, when Yeshua came, Israel said, is no beauty that we should find in him. When Israel were blinded, they didn't find any beauty in him. The vast majority of the population today do not find any beauty in Yeshua. You know why? Just the same as you and I, we initially were blind. We couldn't see any beauty in him, but once we realize who he is, that he came from heaven, the Messiah Yeshua Jesus, to die for our sins, we recognize the beauty that is found in Jesus, in Yeshua.
There is none like him. There is none like him. And Israel in a future day, they will not only say how great is his goodness but how great is his beauty God is so precious the Messiah, the Son of God is beautiful because he gave up himself to provide salvation for mankind. Corn shall make the young man cheerful and new wine the maids in other words Israel will be filled with all their needs but at that time they will say how great is his goodness. And how great is his beauty I trust that you and I today who listen to the message can truly say that God is good the Messiah is his beauty is not only his outward appearance but his inner beauty because he came to give his life a ransom for many this is the king Messiah that came lowly to suffer and to pay for the sin of this world he is coming again and he is going to rule from river to river and every knee will bow to him and every tongue will confess that Yeshua HaMashiach that Jesus the Messiah is Lord thank God that he opened our eyes to accept him today while it is the day of grace and with this beloved friend we concluded chapter 9 of Zechariah and in the will of the Lord in our next meeting we will continue with chapter 10 and all the way to the end of the book of Zechariah.
And so our God and our Father, thank you so much for your word. Thank you so much for the King that came, for the Lord Yeshua, the Lord Jesus that came once to suffer and to die and to pay for our sins. But thank God, oh Abba, our Father, that he is coming again to rule and to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. We pray for Israel, the nation. We pray for the nations of the world. We pray that many will come to know Him who is good and who is beautiful. We pray, Abba Father, in Yeshua's name. Amen. Amen. My dear friend, God bless you.
Until the next time, we say to you all, Shalom, Shalom. Bye-bye.
