The Children of the Flesh and the Children of the Promise
The Children of the Flesh and the Children of the Promise
In his continuing study of the Book of Romans (אֶל־הָרוֹמִיִּים), Brother Gideon Levytam addresses a profound question regarding the Jewish people: If the nation of Israel has largely rejected Yeshua as Messiah, has God’s Word and promises failed? Turning to Romans 9:6-13, Gideon unpacks the Apostle Paul’s answer by drawing a vital distinction between physical descent and spiritual rebirth, reminding us that “they are not all Israel, which are of Israel.”
Through the patriarchal histories of Abraham, Isaac (Yitzchak), Jacob (Ya’akov), and Esau, we learn that salvation and God’s sovereign election are not based on natural lineage or human merit, but entirely upon God’s grace and purpose. Just as the Lord chose Isaac as the child of promise over Ishmael, and chose Jacob before the twins were even born, God continues to call out a remnant for Himself through faith in Yeshua the Messiah.

If you can open your Bible, my dear friends and dear brothers and sisters, to Romans chapter 9. And I would like to read in this meeting from Romans chapter 9 and verse 6 onward. But before we will read, let's just ask the Lord to bless the meeting for today. Of this world bless your word to us as we study together in the book of Romans we pray in Yeshua in Jesus name Amen and Amen so beloved friends and dear brothers and sisters we are in Romans chapter 9 we have already covered in our previous two meetings the first five verses of this most interesting chapter of Romans chapter 9 and I would like to continue from verse 6 now, and if you have your Bible with you, please turn with me to Romans chapter 9 and verse 6, and I'm reading.
Paul continued to say to the Roman believers in the city of Rome, and he's saying to them, not as though the word of God has taken none effect, for they are not all Israel which are of Israel, neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they the children. In Yitzchak, in Isaac, shall thy seed be called. That is, they which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. For this is the word of promise, at this time will I come and Sarah shall have a son. And not only this, but when Rivka, Rebecca, also had conceived by one even by our father Yitzchak, Isaac, for the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand not of works, but of him that calleth.
It was said unto her, the elder shall serve the younger, as it is written, Jacob have I loved and Esau have I hated. Now I was intending to continue to read into verse 29, but just for the benefit of being a focus on this portion of Scripture, I will stop right here, beloved brothers and sisters, as we are studying together now in Romans chapter 9. I just want to make a point. Once again, as we are studying the book of Romans, the book of Romans, we have mentioned it many times, divides itself into these five sections. Romans chapter 1, 2, and 3, the point and the lesson that we learned there, that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
And the first S, sin, is being prominent. And God concluded that all have sinned. Then from chapter 3, verse 21, to the end of chapter 5, the second division of the book of Romans, and that is the salvation that God had provided for us through our Lord Yeshua HaMashiach. Therefore, there is the promise of salvation, and Christ the Messiah provided salvation. We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Then we have learned from chapter 6, verse 1, to the end of chapter 8, Romans 8, verse 39, this third S and that is the S that presents the word sanctification of the believers and therefore we are called to live a sanctified set apart a hallowed life a life that is set apart for the Lord every believer is called to live a sanctified life and now we are in that section Romans 9 10 and 11 that deal with the.
Sovereignty of God, the fourth S, sovereignty, the sovereignty of God in relationship to his earthly people of Israel. And finally, at chapter 12, 1 to the end of chapter 16, verse 27, the word service, the fifth S, service, the service of God's people as they serve God while we are here still on earth before we are being taken at the rapture to be in the presence of God in heaven. And here we are in Romans chapter 9, the section that deals with God's sovereignty in relationship to his earthly people of Israel. And you remember, beloved brothers and sisters, we did say that Romans chapter 9 specifically deals with God's dealing historically with his people Israel.
Historically, in past Israel, past privileges. We will learn about Israel present problem why the Jewish people don't accept the Messiah today this is an amazing lesson as a nation Israel hasn't come to know the Messiah the people through whom the Mashiach came to this world the Lord Jesus came the prophets and the and the apostles and the word of God was given to this world how come the the nation of Israel that gave the world the the Messiah Israel still do not the Messiah as a nation, although many of our own Jewish people came to faith in a Messiah. And of course, in Romans chapter 11, we will learn about the future prospect that God has for his earthly people Israel.
All Israel shall be saved as it was written, as it was predicted, as it was, and it is in the plan of God. Well, we are in chapter 9. We have covered the first five verses of chapter 9, and in chapter 9, beloved brothers and sisters, the Apostle Paul in verses 1 to 5 have expressed his sorrow for his own brethren, the Jewish people. You and I know it very well. Those of us that are Jewish know how our hearts are yearning for our people, the Jewish people, to come to know the Mashiach Yeshua, and the Jewish community worldwide that is still partially blinded to the Messiahship of Yeshua. And we long, along with the Messiah Jesus and along with the Apostle Shaul Paul, we long for the salvation of our people.
And Paul said in chapter 9 verse 1, I say the truth in Christ. I lie not my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit that I have a great heaviness and continuous sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that I myself was accursed from the Messiah, from Christ, for my brethren, my kinsmen, according to the flesh, who are Israelis, to whom pertain is the adoption, notice that, the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises, whose are the fathers, and to whom, according to the flesh, the Mashiach, Christ, came, who is over all, That's how the apostle, Shaul Paul, introduces to the believers at Rome his yearning, his burden for his brethren, the people of Israel.
Well, if Paul has this burden, I don't think any one of us can have any other feeling and sense except to learn from Paul. Learn from his Messiah from the Lord Jesus for his burden for the people of Israel and why why is it Paul is is seeking to explain to the Romans why the nation of Israel as a nation is still not saved although first century church was totally Jewish it happened in Jerusalem it was given by the Lord the Spirit of God came there and formed the of Christ right in the city of Jerusalem where the church was a composition of only Jewish people in first century.
In first century the question was not can a Jew believe in Jesus, in first century the question was can a Gentile believe in Jesus and the Lord taught the apostles and the prophets of first century that the salvation go beyond the borders of Jerusalem. Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, So now you will notice that in Romans chapter 9 there are three questions that are being asked there. You notice question number one is in verse 14. Brothers and sisters, the second question is found in verse 18 and 19. It says, why does he yet find fault? For who has resisted his will? And then question number three will be in verse 30, what shall we say then?
And so the apostle Shaul Paul is seeking to explain, beloved brothers and sisters, to the Roman believers, How is it that the Jewish people or the nation of Israel as a nation hasn't come yet to faith in the Messiah, in the Lord Yeshua, Jesus the Messiah? So in verses 6 to 13, which we have read today, the apostle Shaul Paul explained Israel a rejection of the Messiah in light of biblical history. Why is it that Israel as a nation hasn't yet accepted Yeshua Jesus the Messiah and i'm and i'm emphasizing as a nation though many many Jewish people over the generation and still today in the Laodicean days of the church age many Jewish people come to faith in Yeshua Jesus the Messiah but why Israel as a nation hasn't come to accept the Lord Jesus as the Messiah Savior and the king of the promised king of Israel.
Well, notice what Paul does. And that's why you have to see it. Paul goes all the way back to biblical history. And he is explaining in verses 1 to 13 the reason why Israel, the nation, hasn't yet come to the knowledge of the person of the Lord Jesus the Messiah, why they are not saved nationally in light of biblical history. And so notice what he does in verse 6, Paul is saying, notice what he says, not as though the word of God has taken an effect. He continues, he says, for they are not all Israel, which are of Israel. You notice this expression? For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel.
Notice these two expressions. Of Israel. That's what we have in verse 6. So Paul said that God's words did not fail when the word of God promised in the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah and Yehezkel and Daniel that all the nation of Israel will come to be restored to God in a future day. And so the believers, the Christians in Rome will ask the question, well then why is it that the Jewish people as a nation did not come to know the Messiah we Roman believers from among the Gentile nation we came to accept him how come Israel that gave us according to the list of chapter 9 verses 4 and 5 they had the adoption the glory the covenant the giving of the Lord the services of God the promises and the father and even the Messiah came from the nation of Israel Jesus the Messiah how come the.
Yeshua is the Messiah, and as a nation, accept him. Well, notice what the Apostle Paul explaining to the Roman believers, and you and I need to learn that in our own self here, for our own spiritual growth. He says, because Israel did not accept the Messiah at his first coming, it doesn't mean that they will not accept him in the second coming, but the Apostle Paul helped us to distinguish here in verse 6 between all Israel and of Israel what does he mean by that all Israel are Jewish people who believe in God and in the Messiah who are both physically Jewish and spiritually Jewish in other words they are Jews they are physical and spiritual at the same time this is the.
Israel now the of Israel in the very same verse are Jewish people who are physically Jews but not yet born again not are born of the Spirit of God again let me explain this to you one more time Paul is saying Romans 9 and verse 6 not as though the word of God has taken an effect in other words not that God's word that he promised through the prophets had failed no no he's explaining to the Roman for they are not notice all Israel which are of Israel in other words let me put it this way they are not all Israel the descendants of Abraham Isaac and Jacob who are believers they are not all which are of Israel these are only the natural descendants of Abraham Isaac and Jacob but they are not really born of the Spirit of God.
You see, what Paul is doing here, he's developing what he had said earlier in Romans chapter 2 and in Romans chapter 3. Please turn with me now back to Romans chapter 2. And in Romans chapter 2, he did that. Notice that in Romans chapter 2 and verses 28 and 29. Chapter 2, the first 16 verses, God is presenting the Gentile moral community and pronounced them guilty. And then in chapter 2 and verse 3 and onward, chapter 2 verse 17, I'm sorry, and onward up till chapter 3 and verse 8, he's presenting the religious Jewish people and declare them guilty as well. In other words, what we do have that the moral and the pagan Gentile is guilty before God, but also the religious Jewish person is guilty before God because of his sin nature.
So Paul is explaining this in the earlier chapters. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God, whether they are Jewish, or whether they are Gentiles, whether they are moral, or whether they are pagan, or whether they are religious, all are guilty. But in the section where he speaks about the religious Jewish people, there are these last two verses at the end of chapter 2, and the first verse of chapter 3, he's explaining how one Jewish individual will speak to another Jewish individual, And notice what we read, and he will say one to another. Is not of man but of God. The Hebrew word for Jew is Yehudi.
The word Yehudi comes from the Hebrew word Lehodot. Lehodot means to praise God, to thank God, to accept God and God's will in one's life. That is a true praiser of God. So a true Jew is a Jewish person who was born as a descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but not only born, not only have the natural seed, but also is a true believer in God and accepting God's will in his or her life. Might be Jewish by birth, like some of our own family members, yet they are not in a relationship with God when they are not accepting the will of God and submitting to the will of God.
And therefore a true Yehudi who is a praiser of God is one that truly is not only born to Jewish parents and grandparents and so on, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but also believing and following the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and Yeshua, Jesus, the Messiah, in our present day. And so the lesson is tremendous. It says in chapter 3 of the book of Romans, in verse 1, much, he says, notice that in verse 1, what advantage then has the Jew? Romans chapter 3 and verse 1. Or what profit is there in circumcision? And Paul answered that in verse 2. He said, much. Every way, chiefly because unto them were committed the oracle of God.
There is an advantage to the Jewish people in a sense that to Israel the law was given, the commandment was given, and the list that we have in Romans 9 here, the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the Lord, the services of God, the promises and the fathers and the Messiah came from the Jewish people, from the nation of Israel, but they must be born again just the same as a Gentile has to be born again this is exactly what Yeshua Jesus the Messiah said to nicodemus you must be born again that which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit he said i said to you you must be born again in Hebrew.
New birth, new life. It is applicable to the Jewish person and it is applicable to the Gentiles, to the goyim in the same way. Because all of us have sinned and we all need forgiveness of sins because all of us have inherited the sin nature. And there is no prophet. Flesh and blood shall not inherit the kingdom of God. And so beloved brothers and sisters and dear friend, Paul developed Romans chapter 9 and he is explaining to the Gentiles Christians in the city of Rome why Israel as a nation hasn't come yet into faith in Christ, faith in Yeshua Jesus the Messiah. So he's explaining and in verse 6 he's really making distinguishing the of Israel from the all Israel.
Again let me read verse 6. God has taken none effect for they are not all Israel which are of Israel the all Israel are Jewish people descendants of Abraham Isaac and Jacob who are not only physical descendants but also spiritually they are born of the Spirit of God and the second one the of Israel is the totality of the Jewish community worldwide. All the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, all the physical descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, they are the of Israel. These are descendants, physical people who were born by nature to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But out of this all, Israel, there is the of Israel, the Jewish believers, in Jesus the Messiah in fact I want you to go with me to a verse it is very important verse it's found in Galatians chapter 6 in Galatians chapter 6 the apostle Paul distinguished the Israel of God in this present-day dispensation of the church age notice he says in Galatians chapter.
6 and verse 14 he's right into the Galatians and in chapter 6 and verse 14 he says but God forbid notice that a Galatians chapter 6 and I'm reading there in verse 14 but God forbid that I should boast and accept in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ by whom the world the world is crucified unto me and I unto the world." He continues, "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision available, but a new creation." You see that? And then he says in verse 16, "And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy upon the Israel of God." Notice the The Israel of God in Galatians 6:16 are the Jewish believers who are the Israel of God within the church which is a composition of Jews and Gentiles who are part of the body of Christ.
Notice he used there the expression the Israel of God. The Israel of God in Romans 6:16 does not speak of all the church. In the church age, who are part of the church age, the remnant of Israel who are part of the assembly of the ecclesia during these present days of the church age. This is so important, beloved brothers and sisters. In fact, I think we should read one more verse. If you go back to Romans 11 and verse 5, in Romans 11 we will get to Romans 11 a little bit later on in our study together of the book of Roman but in Romans 11 in verse 5 the apostle Paul mentioned of this remnant remnant is you know it's not only two or three these are there's no number it is multitude of believers of Jewish believers in Romans 11 in verse 5 he says even so then at this present time also there is.
A remnant according to the election of grace you see in this present age of the church age there is an elected community of Jewish believers like Paul like Peter like James like Jude like all the early apostles and and the many that came through them to believe like Timothy and many others who became believers in Jesus the Messiah like some of us that I listened to the message today who are Jewish believers who are part of the Israel of God that is part of the ecclesia of the church we are believers in the Lord Jesus the Messiah in the present age considered and reckon in the in the Scripture as the Israel of God so you notice what the apostle Paul is explaining to the Roman believers in chapter.
Word did not fail because Israel as a nation did not accept the Messiah at his first coming. He says, Roman believers, I wanted to understand the contrast between the all Israel, which are believers, that come out of Israel, which is the totality of the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Now, this is so precious because it helps us the sovereignty of God and the truth of election. You see, you and I oftentimes don't understand election. Sometimes we don't even believe and we don't even understand that God has chosen a people for himself. You remember what the Lord said to the Ephesians? Go with me please to Ephesians chapter 1 and verse 3.
Notice that. Ephesians chapter 1 and verse 3 and 4. Look what the Apostle Paul is saying to the Gentile believers in the city of Ephesus. To them he says this. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all or with every spiritual blessing in the heavenlies in Christ, in the Mashiach. Then he adds in verse 4. According as he has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love, having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.
You see, beloved brothers and sisters, world. Ephesians chapter 1 and verse 4. We have been predestinated. All believers, Jew and Gentile alike of the church age, have been predestinated to become an adopted people. We are accepted in the beloved according to Ephesians chapter 1 and verse 6. We are redeemed through the blood of the Messiah in chapter 1 of Ephesians and verse 7. We receive God's We are made known of God's mystery and his will in Ephesians 1:9. We obtain an eternal inheritance in Ephesians 1:11. We have heard of God's truth in Ephesians 1:13 when the message of the gospel was proclaimed to us. So beloved brothers and sisters, the church, the believers from among the Gentiles have been chosen in eternity past, before the foundation of the world.
It's not because you and I have earned anything on our own. God is sovereign, and the truth of election must be understood. So now notice what Paul does, and I really go back to Romans chapter 9. In verses 7, 8, and 9, Paul gives his first illustration to show that physical descendants alone is not sufficient. Just like in Israel's history just the same in the same way in church history if a father and a mother is a christian the believer in Jesus the Messiah it doesn't mean that the children automatically become Christians or no each one has to accept the Messiah but but God knows whom he have elected and chosen so notice what he's presenting these verses 7, 8, and 9 to the Roman believers.
In verse 7, Paul, notice I'm reading verse 7, Romans 9 and verse 7, Neither be called they are the seed of Abraham, are they children, but in Isaac shall thy seed be called. What Paul does, he goes back to history, and he says, wait a minute Abraham actually had eight children he had one son by the name of Ishmael from Hagar he had another son by the name of Yitzchak that came from Sarai and he had additional six children that came to become his from another woman by the name of Keturah Abraham actually had eight children. What Paul is saying you see while both Yishmael and Yitzchak were the physical descendants of Abraham Yishmael was a physical descendants of Abraham through Hagar and Yitzchak was a physical descendant of Abraham through Sarah and we can add Keturah there were other six children that Abraham had Paul is explaining to the Romans he says and I'm reading verse 7 not because they are all of the seed of Abraham they are called the children but in Isaac shall thy seed be called I have chosen Yitzhak I didn't choose Yishmael or I didn't choose the other six children of Keturah in Isaac shall thy seed be called go back to Genesis please chapter 21 in verse 12.
Genesis chapter 21 in verse 12 we do read beloved brothers and sisters we read in verse 10 first of all God says wherefore she said unto Abraham cast out the bond woman that her son and her son for the son of the bond woman shall not be heir with my son even with. Yitzchak and then we read and the thing was very grievous in Abraham's side because of his son he loved Ishmael although he was not the son of Sarai he was the son of Hagar but then notice what God said to Abraham in verse 12 and God said to Abraham let it not be grievous in thy side because of the land and because of thy bound woman in all that Sarah has said unto thee hearken unto her voice and then God said for in Isaac shall thy seed be called I have chosen Yitzchak and not Ishmael I have chosen Yitzchak and not the six sons of Keturah in Isaac shall thy seed be called this is extremely interesting to see these beloved.
Chapter 22 we do read in verse 1 and 2 and it came to pass after this thing that God did test Abraham and he said unto him Abraham and he said behold here am I and he said take now thy son thine only son Yitzchak Isaac whom thou lovest and get thee out into the land of Moriah and offer him there for a burnt offering upon the mountains which I will tell thee of beloved brothers and sisters God had chosen Isaac and not Ishmael and not the six sons of Ketua it's not because Isaac was better it's not because Abraham loved Ishmael less and Abraham more it is because of the sovereign election that God had chosen God had chosen a people for himself and therefore to realize and to understand.
And I if our believers we have been elected and chosen by God's grace not because we are better than any other people but it is election in eternity past God has this plan now go back to Roman chapter 9 and in verses 8 and 9 Paul continued to explain and he says in verse 8 but not only the physical notice not only the physical and spiritual children of promise are counted notice that i'm reading now in verse 8 that is they which are the children of the flesh they're not the children of God but the children of the promise are counted for a seed so you see one has to be a not only the the child of the flesh they are not really the children of God they are not what God have intending to have.
For himself only the physical descendant but he's explaining these are not the children of God but the children of the promise are counted for the seed in Isaac shall thy seed be called although Isaac and Ishmael and the children of Ketua had the same father yet these three women One of these women was chosen and one child of these women, Sarah, this person, Isaac, was the one that was the child of promise. And so notice in verse 9, God gave a promise for a son through Sarah and not through Agar. And he says in verse 9, for this is the word of promise. At this time will I come and Sarah shall have a son.
Brothers and sisters Abraham and Sarah getting older and older and by the time that Abraham get to be nearly a hundred years old and Sarah some nine years old no children yet and that's why she hastened him and she told Abraham take take my servant Hagar and have a child with her because I'm barren but God said to Abraham notice this is the word promise at this time at a set time I will come and Sarah shall have a son why because I am purposing this in my will and my plan for you Abraham I'm planning and I'm this is my program it will not be Ishmael it will not be the six sons of Ketua but in Isaac shall thy seed be called you see this beloved brothers and sisters so Paul is seeking to help.
The Roman believers to understand why all Israel hasn't come to faith in a Messiah as yet why because as we read verse 6 they are not all Israel which are of Israel verse 7 neither because they are the seed of Avraham are they all children but in Isaac shall thy seed be called they which are the children of the flesh are not the children of God but the children of the of the promise are counted for the seed verse 9 for this is the word of promise at this time will I come and Sarah shall have a son in the appointed time in appointed season in my time Abraham God said to him I will let.
Your wife Sarah be barren and she will bring forth a son she will call his name Yitzchak you know the word Yitzchak in Hebrew mean laughter we use it in Hebrew many times every time Isaac was with his father and his mother and they said this is our son everybody he left he said how is it possible your son you are 100 years old that's your child and even when the promise was given to Abraham and to Yitzchak they were there was laughter he said how is it possible that at my age i will bear a son but is anything too hard for God nothing is too hard for the Lord he's able to do far beyond what we can comprehend and his purposes will surely come to to pass so to help us to understand why all Israel is not yet redeemed because.
God in his program and his plan partially blinded the nation of Israel so the Gentiles will benefit from that. We will learn about that later on. And then at the end of the days, all Israel, physical descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, they will become redeemed. They will become physical and spiritual people of God, the people of the Lord. But now listen to that. In the next verses, verses 10, 11, 12, and 13, the Apostle Paul zero further in. He helped the Roman believers understand even more. You see, when it comes to Yishmael and Yitzchak, both of these children had two separate mothers. And they had one father, yes, that came from two separate mothers.
But in the next verses, the apostle Paul is even narrowing this down to explain election. And in these next verses, Paul gives his second illustration to show that even though Jacob and Esav had the very same father and the very same mother, Yet, they were twins, yet God has chosen one of them even before he was even born, although they were both yet in the womb of their mother Rivka. Notice this. This is amazing. This helps us to understand the truth of election. I know many people have a problem with this. How is it possible? That some are chosen and others are not. Well, God is not going to argue with you and I.
He's not asking for your opinion or for my opinion. If he needed your opinion or my opinion, he would have asked this from us. But God declaring his word to his people and to mankind. He wants us to accept his word and to acknowledge that God knows what he says He pleases because he is God. And you and I are simply mankind, people kind whom he created for his own pleasure. So now notice that. In verses 10 to 13, Paul gives his second illustration to show that although Jacob and Esau had the same mother and father, yet God's promises and God's election is according to his own will.
And so in verse 10 Paul is saying writing he said and not only this not only about Abraham and sarah and hagar that gave birth to Yitzhak and Ishmael and in Isaac shall thy seed be called not in Ishmael thy seed be called now in verse 10 he says that not only this but is it but when revka also had conceived By one, this is one, notice he used by one, the same father, this is Yitzchak, even by our father Isaac, verse 10, then verse 11, for the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of him that calleth, to her verse 12 the elder shall serve the younger as it is written Jacob have I loved and Esau have I hated now this is such an interesting beloved brothers and sisters an interesting passage now turn with me to Genesis chapter 25 please and in Genesis chapter 25 we do read about Rivka Genesis.
Chapter 25 we read that Esav and Yaakov came from the same mother and in Genesis chapter 25 we do read in verse I'll read verse 20 I'll read let me read verse 19 to 23 these are the generation of Isaac Abraham's son Abraham beget Isaac and Isaac was 40 years old when he took Rivka to wife the daughter of the Syrian of Paddan Aram, the sister of Lavan the Syrian. And Isaac entreated the Lord for his wife because she was barren. And the Lord was entreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived. Verse 22 and 23. And the children, listen, two children, the children struggled together within her. In other words, there were twins in her belly.
Already fighting struggling inside her belly they were not born as yet and she said if it be so why am i thus and she went to inquire of the Lord and so we read in verse 23 and the Lord said unto her listen what the Lord is saying it's so beautiful he's saying this to rivka he said two nations are in thy womb and two men You have two nations in your womb, Rivka. You have two manners of people that will be separated out of your womb, Rivka. They were born, before they even came to this world. I want you to know that one people shall be stronger than the other.
Secondly, I want you to know that the elder one, not the younger one, but the elder shall serve the younger. Rivka, I want you to know that even the one that will be born first out of the twin, the elder, this is Esav, He will actually not going to be the chosen one. He will serve the younger one, Yaakov, who will come after him. And so Paul developed that and he's explaining the truth of election, narrowing, zeroing into not only Avraham that had two children from Hagar and Sarah, but he's zeroing in and he says Yitzchak was the father of Yitzchak. Yaakov and Esav from one mother by the name of Rivka.
And even before she gave birth to her children, the Lord have already gave a prediction and a prophetic word whom he have elected and whom he did not. Even before they were born, even before they have done any good or evil, even before they have chosen, to walk with God or not to walk with God, the Lord has already set his purpose and mind on Yaakov, the younger, that the elder will serve and Yaakov will be greater. So now back to Romans chapter 9. After we have read in verse 10 that Esav and Yaakov had the same mother, verse 10, in verse 11, In 12, Paul is emphasizing, he says, Esav and Yaakov destinies were not yet dependent upon dissent, but it depended upon the election of God.
God have elected, and he's quoting now in verse 11 and 12 what happened in the days when God spoke to Rivka. 11 and 12 for the children being not yet born neither having done any good or evil you know you cannot say well Jacob was a good man and Esau was a bad man that's why God had chosen Jacob and he didn't choose Esau you cannot say that because they didn't do anything yet because they were not born as yet so he says for the children being not yet born neither having done any good or evil but notice that verse 11 be that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of Him that call.
You see, beloved brothers and sisters, this is something that we always have to learn. It's not because I'm good or you are good or somebody is good that God says, well, because you are so good, I'm going to choose you. It's not because how much obedience you had in your life that you have become a child of God. No, it is election. Even though we don't grasp the truth of election, yet the truth of election is taught in the Word of God. Believers of this church age were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world. Ephesians 1 verses 3 and 4. By God to be his elect nation but it will be much more than just the physical descendants of Abraham Isaac and Jacob it will be the physical and spiritual descendants of Abraham Isaac and Jacob and so i'm reading once again verse 11 and 12 for the children being not yet born neither having done any good or evil according to election might stand not of works but of him that is of God that is calling God have called a chosen people for himself and then notice what he says in verse 12 and this is really verse 12 and 13 it says it was said unto her this is quoting Genesis 25 23 the elder shall serve the younger The elder shall serve the younger.
They haven't done any good or evil. They were not born as yet. Yet the elder shall serve the younger. And then in verse 13, he is concluding that by saying, As it is written, Jacob have I loved and Esau have I hated. This verse you ask immediately the question does God really hated Esav no really what we learn from these verses God does not hate any person God hates sin and God loves the sinner but what we learn from him Jacob have I loved and Esau have I hated is simply saying Jacob have I elected elected and a sav I did not choose I did not elect now you notice where it is written go back to the last book of the of the Hebrew Scriptures in the prophet Malachi Malachi and you notice what it says there in Malachi I want you just to notice that in these in these verses is the the book of Malachi chapter.
1 and verses 1 2 and 3 we have studied together already the prophecy of Malachi beautiful prophecy this is the final prophetic word of the Lord to Israel some 450 years before the Lord Yeshua Jesus the Messiah came but notice what it says in the first three verses of this prophecy of Malachi the burden of the Lord of the Lord to Israel by Malachi verse 1 verse 2 i have In other words, the children of Israel disobeyed the Lord. They have gone astray. From the Lord and so in the first few verses of Malachi chapter 1 there's a burden that was in the heart of God and he sent Malachi to speak to his people who are now already back in the land after the 70 years of the captivity in the land of Babel he they were restored back to the land but then they departed from him once again So God is challenging them.
And he said to them in chapter 1, he said to them, I have loved you, saith the Lord. I love you, Israel. I have chosen you. I brought you back to the land. I fulfilled my promises to you. And in response, the nation said to him, but you say, wherein have you loved us? Did you really love us? Look at what's going on here. We have enemies. We have problems and all. And on and on and the Lord had to remind them that he has chosen them and although they have problems it is because their own fault because they disobey the Lord and therefore he said to them when they asked him wherein you have loved us and they and then he said to them was not Jacob when was not isa Jacob's brother Israel don't you remember from Genesis chapter 25 before you were even born as a nation that they were twins in the belly of Rivka.
And then I said to Rivka, the elder shall serve the younger. And he said, was not Esau Jacob's brother, saith the Lord, yet I have loved Jacob. In other words, he said, I have chosen Jacob. In my purposes, I have chosen Jacob before he was even born. And then he continued and said, and Esau have I hated. What he basically means, and Esau I did not choose. Election was the sovereign will of God. He is sovereign. He is electing whom he will. And he bring in to himself whom he will. 13 of our chapter of Romans chapter 9 and verse 13 as it is written God declaring concerning Jacob and Esau from Malachi chapter 1 verses 1 2 and 3 love simply means to choose hate simply means not to choose because God never hates any person God loves the sinner but hates the sin He never hates any person.
Now, in conclusion of these verses, there are three things that we learn here in conclusion of these verses 6 to 13 of Romans chapter 9. Number one, God's word did not fail even though Israel failed. The physical descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob fail, yet God's word and God's promises never fail. Secondly, conclusion of these verses, that blessings and salvation are coming not because one is a physical or even by any merit that one does. Blessings do not come upon one because of his physical descendants. Although he or she, if they were physical descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, it's such a blessing to have such an heritage.
But true spiritual blessing does not depend upon your physical line or even any merit that you have done. These blessings and these redemption and salvation come out of the election of God. And number three, beloved brothers and sisters, we learn that spiritual blessing comes only through the will of God, through God's will and God's grace. As we are reminded elsewhere from Ephesians chapter 2 and verse 8, grace, are ye saved through faith. And even that is not of yourself. It is the gift of God, not of works, verse 9, lest any man should boast. Beloved brothers and sisters, this is fascinating to learn the truth of election. So what we have learned from Romans chapter 9, verses 6 to 13, we learn, beloved brothers and sisters, Paul is explaining to the Roman believers in the city of Rome, which were mainly Gentile believers, who asked the question, how come Israel, the nation, as a nation, is not, we might say, believed as a whole nation in its totality?
After all, the people of Israel to them gave the adoption. And the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Lord the services of God the promises the fathers and out of them came the Mashiach the Messiah who is God blessed forever how come they are not as a nation are born again as a nation Paul is explaining to them in these twofold illustrations using biblical history to explain And he wanted them to understand these beloved brothers and sisters. Now, Paul will eventually tell them that all Israel will be saved in the future day, at the end of the tribulation. And he will say that in chapter 11, I do not want you, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceit.
That blindness in part happened to Israel. Israel the nation the whole nation partial blindness happened to Israel it is until the fullness of the Gentiles become in and so all Israel shall be saved as it is written there shall come out of Zion the deliverer and shall turn ungodliness from Jacob Israel the nation will be saved nationally but that is reserved at the end of the tribulation when the Messiah will come at his second coming Yeshua Jesus and Israel will look upon him and acknowledge him and recognize him that he is truly the promised Messiah of Israel and the Savior of this world and in a day a nation shall be born but until that time to learn the truth of election you and I beloved brothers and sisters were elected and chosen before.
The foundation of the world. It has nothing to do with your parents or your grandparents or your great-grandparents. It's nothing to do with any merit that you and I have done. We are all by nature heading toward eternal separation from God because of our sin nature. But God in His sovereign election and sovereign choice, He brought a people for Himself and opened our eyes to accept the Lord Jesus, Messiah today. And my dear friend, I trust that the Lord will, as you hear the message of the Word of God, that you will come to a point to realize that you need a Savior. And it is God who will inform you of who the Savior is, that Jesus is the Savior, the Messiah is indeed the Lord Jesus, and that you will come to know Him.
And when you come to know Him, you will realize that it was. God's grace and God's sovereign election that had brought you to himself. May God work in the hearts of every one of us, even today, my dear friend, as we concluded with the first 13 verses of Romans chapter 9. So, Abba, our Father, thank you. Thank you for these truths that we are learning from the book of Romans. Bless your word to us all. We pray for we ask it in Jesus and Yeshua's name. Amen and Amen. Until the next time, my dear friend, God bless you. We say, Shalom, Shalom. Bye-bye. You
