Crucified and Raised with the Messiah
Crucified and Raised with the Messiah
From Romans 6:6–11, in his study of the Book of Romans (אֶל־הָרוֹמִיִּים), Brother Gideon Levytam continues to expound on Paul’s teaching regarding the subject of sanctification. In his exhortation to the Roman believers, Paul repeatedly uses the word “knowing” to emphasize their positional standing before God, a reminder to them, and to all believers, that they now belong to the Lord Jesus the Messiah. Although believers in Jesus the Messiah are still living in this world, they are to know and understand that through the Messiah’s death, their old sinful identity was also put to death before God. Furthermore, because they are united with Jesus the Messiah in His resurrection, they are called to live for God, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Well, we want to say shalom to everyone. God bless you. We want to welcome you to the Bible classes of the Holy Scriptures in Israel, where we study the Word of God from first century Hebrew messianic perspective. We are very thankful for you that are here with us. Continue in the study of the book of Romans. We've arrived to Romans chapter 6 and we will read today from Romans chapter 6 and we'll read from verse 6 to verse 11. We have covered already the first five verses of Romans chapter 6. Let's just read these. This is a short segment here, Romans chapter 6 and verse 6. The apostle Shaul Paul is writing to the Roman believers and he's saying to them in verse 6, or he that died, is freed from sin.
Now if we be dead with Christ, with Mashiach, we believe that we shall also live with him, knowing that Christ, being raised from the dead, dieth no more. Death has no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once. But in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise, verse 11, reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ, through Yeshua HaMashiach, our Lord. And I will stop here for verse 11 and just read a few verses for the portion. For today, and I trust that the Lord will help us to understand. These verses, beloved brothers and sisters, are not easy portion to understand from the Word of God.
The portion that we have entered in, in the book of Romans, we've entered into the section in the book of Romans that deal with the theme of sanctification. So, we have already covered the fact that "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God," which we have covered in Romans 1:1-3:20. We have also covered the second portion from the book of Romans, the theme of salvation, in that Romans 3:21 to Romans 5:21. And now we have entered to the third section of the book of Romans, deal with the theme of sanctification this is the third s letter out of the five s's that are found throughout the book of Romans sin salvation sanctification sovereignty and service this third portion sanctification of all believers this is of course applied to believers not to the unbelievers.
That we are called to live a set apart life to be sanctified come from the thought of being set apart that's where the Hebrew word kadosh mekudashim set apart for God is important because after all because we are forgiven because positionally we belong to the Lord and we are saved and we are holy set apart positionally for God Now, because we are still here upon the face of this earth, we are called to live a sanctified life. And so that whole section, Romans 6, Romans 7, Romans 8, the apostle Shaul Paul is emphasizing the theme of sanctification. Well, we began, of course, if you remember, in the introduction of chapter 6 in our previous meeting together, we have already mentioned the fact.
That Paul is really answering to questions that may be asked by someone and you remember we say that there are four questions in these Romans 6 7 and 8 that the apostle Paul is responding to let me just remind you in Romans chapter 6 and verse 1 the first question is being asked what shall we say then here's the question shall we continue in sin that grace may abound And Apostle Shaul Paul will answer that. Then in verse 15 of Romans chapter 6, what shall we say then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Again, Paul will answer, God forbid, as he continues with the teaching of the book of Romans, specifically 6, 7, and 8.
The third question that will be asked in chapter 7, and there we read in verse 7. Say then, is the law sin? God forbid. Paul will answer this question, beloved brothers and sisters. And later on in chapter 8 and verse 31, the fourth question will be in verse 31, what shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? And so you see, beloved brothers and sisters, the apostle Paul will answer these four questions, Specifically, the first three are really an objection that might rise by some who misunderstand their place in Christ, in Mashiach. And so in the first 10 verses of Romans chapter 6, the Apostle Paul in these 10 verses, he's answering the first question that is mentioned really in verse 1, which we have covered.
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? And you remember, beloved brothers and sisters, we have covered in the first five verses that our pastor Paul said to the believers, to the Roman believers, he said, you need to know that you have already died in Christ, in the Messiah. So you should not continue to live a life of sin in order to get more grace from the Lord. You have already died when Christ, when the Messiah died, you died in Him. And so you remember what we have looked over the first five verses. In verse 2, God forbid, Paul says, how shall we that are dead to sin?
And it really should be, how shall we that have died to sin? It's something that has already happened when we became believers in the Lord Jesus, Messiah, we died in him. When he died 2,000 years ago, you and I, when we have accepted him, we died in him. When he died, you and I have died. How shall we that have died to sin live any longer therein? He's saying to them in verse 2. In verse 3, he says, don't you know? And you remember, beloved brothers and sisters, we mentioned that there are three important words that are found here in this. Chapter number one is the word to know verse one verse six verse nine knowing number two the word reckoning verse 11 and number three the word yielding yield verse 13 twice it's it has it's mentioned so when it's come to to know it has to do with our mind we reckoning, we are to reckon it in our hearts.
And when it's come to yielding, we are to yield to the Lord's will in our will, to let His will to be our will. That's the three words, to know in our mind, to reckon in our hearts, and to yield in our will. These are the three important words that I mentioned. To know, it is mentioned verse 3. Verse 9 to reckon in our hearts it's mentioned in verse 11 to yield it's mentioned in verse 13 twice these three words are important to understand as we are studying these six chapters of the book of Romans so in the first few verses we have already covered that the believer every one of us need to understand and to know in our mind to make it clear in our own mind that really we have died already when the Messiah died two thousand years ago we died in him and that's why we are we receive a new nature we are new creation you remember second Corinthians chapter 5 and verse 17 all that are in Christ Jesus in the Mashiach Yeshua are new creation all things have passed away all become new and therefore he's saying to them.
That they wreck that to understand to know that so many of us have been that have verse 3 now know you know that there's so many of us that have been baptized unto Christ were baptized unto his death and again don't think for a moment that the word that there is water here in the baptism he doesn't speak of a water baptism the word baptizo in the Greek it simply to be be immersed into. Just the same like the Hebrew word lehitavel or tevila. It simply means to be immersed, be put under, be placed into. So don't you know, verse 3, that as many of us as were immersed into, placed under, placed into Christ Jesus, we are baptized into his death.
We have been identified with his death. Died the believer died that's why he's saying don't you know that that's why you should not continue in sin that grace may abound God forbid because you have died when Yeshua died and you are affiliated you are associated with him and therefore you should not be careless in saying well God provided grace for us he forgave our sins So if God is so gracious to forgive our sins and extending grace towards us as sinners, as rebels, as enemies of God, well, he can continue on extending grace because the more we sin, the more God provides grace for us.
You remember that's how chapter 5 has ended in chapter 5 and verse 20. Abound, but where sin abounded, where sin increased, grace did much more abound, much more increase. In other words, the more sin came into this world, the more God have extended and shown his grace, his chesed towards sinners. You see? But what he's really saying now, now that we became believers and are forgiven, now that God have declared us righteous now that we belong to the Lord Jesus the Messiah affiliated and associated with him we should not be careless to live life of sin carelessly yes we still have the old nature yes we still stumble but that is never to everyone oh well you continue you can continue on sinning because God is so gracious he will forgive your sins that is a wrong way of presenting the word of God in fact the opposite is because of the grace of God because of what the Lord Jesus the Messiah have done for us the believer ought to have this desire to live.
We live for the Lord because he or she is linked with him. When Jesus the Messiah died, the believer died in him. And so he's saying in verse 4, therefore we are buried with him by baptism. We are immersed, we are identified with him into death. To us when we have accepted the Lord we are so identified with the person of the Lord Jesus because of who he is and because of what he had done every believer we notice Paul and new Romans and all of us who are believers we buried with him by baptism into death like as that Christ was raised from the dead by the by the glory of the father even so notice that verse verse 40 and even so we should in newness of life the believer is so much associated with the Messiah Yeshua who died was buried and rose again he or she are called to live now and to walk in newness of life and we finish verse 5 for since we have been planted together in the likeness of his death we shall also be in the likeness of his resurrection.
After he explained this and appealed to the Roman believers to know it in their mind every believer need to know that he is dead to sin because he or she are affiliated with the person of the Lord Jesus the Messiah when he died the believer died when he or she have accepted him now in the next portion which is for us now beloved brothers and sisters, in verse 10 onward to verse, really, I should say verse 6 to 10, the believer is to know that he should no longer serve sin. Every one of us as believers, we have to realize, you know, we used to be slaves to sin.
We used to be slaves to sin. If you remember, it was actually the Lord Jesus, the Messiah, who said, if you turn with me for a moment to John chapter 8, you remember what we read in John chapter 8 concerning the fact that when we live before we accepted the Lord, we were really slaves to sin. Notice in Romans chapter, I'm sorry, in John chapter 8, the Lord Jesus said to the. The people of Israel who were around him, the disciples and the leaders of Israel that were there, the people that were there, he said to them in verse 34, Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, whosoever commits sin is the servant of sin.
You see, sin became our master. And when we lived without God, without new birth, without new life, without being born of the Holy Spirit of God, we served sin. Sin became our master. Notice in verse 35 of John 8, and the servant abides not in the house forever, but the son abides ever. And then he says in verse 36, if the son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. In other words, beloved brothers and sisters. We became free from the sin to be the master over the life of those that belong to the Lord. And therefore, this is why the book of Romans here in chapter 6 and 7 and 8 deal with sanctification, to be set apart for the Lord here in this world.
You see, when we are going to go to heaven, when we're going to be in the presence of God, we will never sin anymore. It's only when we are here and now as believers, we are struggling with an ongoing battle that is going between the two natures that we have. So now notice what he does, and I'm back to Romans chapter 6 and verse 6. So the first five verses, every believer needs to know that he or she have died already to sin. But now in verses 6 to 10, every believer needs to know that he or she should no longer now as believers as Messiah followers they are not to serve sin not to allow the sin nature to master over us over the believer and that's why he gives them a reason and that's why again you notice the fact that he says in verse 6 knowing this again he's using the word to know know this knowing this we know this.
That our old man once again he's using this expression our old man is crucified again he died had been killed died with him that a body of sin might be destroyed that henceforth notice that we should not serve sin so what Paul is saying to us all he's saying to the Romans you see you need to know it again know it in your mind on the basis of the Word of God. It's not opinion, man-made opinion. No, it's based on the Word of God, on the written Word of God, with the help of the Spirit of God, knowing these that are old men. Now, what does that mean when he said old men?
You remember oftentimes we distinguish between the old men and the new men, the old nature. The new nature and the old creation and a new creation. You remember we use this expression many times as we have this to distinguish between the two natures that the believers have. Now again it's not always easy to understand but he says here in verse 6 knowing this that our old man is crucified with him. Now if you turn with me a moment to Ephesians chapter 4 Ephesians chapter 4 and again we have to see how God presents before us the two natures that we have it's not always easy to understand because if we are new creation well we are new creation as if the old creation have gone away so if the old nature of no longer is.
Hear, but we realize very fast that we still have these sins in our life. None of us can say that we have stopped sinning, although we are called in the power of the Spirit of God not to live a life of sin anymore, to live with the help of the Spirit of God. We can live a life that is led by the Spirit of God, a life that is free from sin, but we also realize that as long that we are here in this world there is the call for us to walk in the Spirit and not to fulfill the lust of the flesh. Why?
Because we still have within us this old nature. It didn't die as yet. That's why we received a new nature. And so we have the distinction between the old nature, the new nature, the flesh in contrast with the Spirit, the outward man in. This is presented to us throughout the Word of God. So just if you turn with me for a moment to Ephesians chapter 4, and then notice what we read in Ephesians chapter 4 and verse 22. That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts. You see, that old man, now notice, by the way, beloved brothers and sisters, that Apostle Paul is saying here to put off.
Now, of course, positionally, we have already put off the old man. But apparently, as we are living here in this world, we are called to put off the old man and to realize that we need to live our life knowing that our old man is dead, is crucified. Now, again, this is not easy to explain, we have to confess, not easy to understand also, to grasp what's happening here. Accepted the Lord Jesus the Messiah we became new creation that's it we belong to him you are affiliated with him we belong to him we have a divine nature which cannot sin and yet we know it in a practical day by day in the life of God's people we know very well that well we still somehow fail and sin pride rising up anger rises up covetousness rise up lust comes up This is the whole, that's the reason why the apostle Paul writes this ministry to the local assemblies in Asia Minor, like the Corinthians, for example.
He's calling them saints in chapter 1, but throughout the whole 16 chapters of the book of Corinthians, there is one problem after another. It makes one wonder what kind of saints they are, what kind of born-again people they are. There were divisions there. There were immorality there. There were divorces there they were they were also in the Ephesians in the same way there were issues apparently that's why he's writing to them the Romans the same thing he's writing to them to help them to understand that now that they belong to the Lord they are to seek to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord in the power of the Spirit of God living and putting off the old man and living a life that the new man is calling to live because the old man is crucified he's dead positionally before the Lord now sometimes we use this expression beloved brothers and sisters the word positionally and practically now again many do not quite see this but the only way to explain this is to understand what we are in Christ in Messiah positionally and how we live our life here.
Until we are being taken out of here to heaven, to glory. And it is here that we are challenged and we have conflict. You remember what Galatians says, the flesh lusts us against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh. And they are contrary to each other. Galatians chapter 5 and verse 16. Walk in the Spirit and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Well, apparently, although that the old man, again i'm reading a Romans chapter 6 and verse 6 knowing to know this in your own mind that the old man is dead he's crucified with him with Yeshua with the Messiah that the body of sin might be destroyed and henceforth we should not serve sin in other words don't allow sin to control you to master you.
Easy to grasp that. But in the measure that the Spirit of God helped us to grasp it, to understand it, we have to realize that our affiliation with the Lord Jesus is once and for all have been done the moment we have accepted him. We cannot reverse this anymore. We belong to him. And the old man is Christ. Crucified has been crucified already when he died and we have accepted him the moment we have entered into a relationship with the Lord Yeshua the Messiah we died in him and by the way when Adam sinned remember we saw it in chapter 5 and verse 12 where we did read in Romans chapter 5 and verse 12 One man's sin enter into the world and death by sin.
So death passed upon all men for all have sinned. In other words, in Adam, we have all inherited a sin nature. We sinned in Adam. But now that we are in Mashiach, in Christ, in Christ, in Messiah, we belong to him. When he died and paid for the sin of this world, he was buried and he rose. Again we have accepted him we are seeing as we are in him and we are in Christ in the Messiah this is amazing to understand it no rules no laws no man-made opinion or man-made ways will change anything because salvation justification is based upon faith in him and in his finished work of our Lord Jesus Yeshua the Messiah so notice he said another verse in Colossians if you turn now to Colossians chapter 3 and you notice that in Colossians chapter 3 we do read and I'll read Colossians 3 and verse 9 listen to this Colossians 3 and verse 9 lie not one to another put off the old man with his deeds.
Again, notice he used that expression, the old man, ha-ish, ha-yashan, ha-Adam, ha-yashan in Hebrew. You put it off already. You notice that? Seeing that you have already put it off. When did we put it off? We put it off the moment we became children of God, the moment we have invited the Lord, the moment we have confessed our sins and. Accepted the Lord Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We have already put off the old man with what? With his deeds. What is the deeds of the old man? Like he said, lie not one to another. And you can have a list of things that we are doing.
In fact, if you go back to verse 8 of Colossians chapter 3, and blasphemy and filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that you have put off. Now, I want you to notice that it's so interesting. In Colossians 3 and verses 8 and 9, it shows us the two aspects of putting off. In verse 8, it says, now ye also put off. This is practically, put it off practically. But in verse 9, you have already put off the old man. Positionally, you see the difference. In verse 8, you see the practical aspect. In verse 9, you see the positional aspect. In other words, we have already put off the old man, the old nature, but now we have to put off the old man activities in our day-by-day living.
Amazing, amazing to see as we study together these truths that the Apostle Paul is presenting before the Roman believers. Back now to Romans chapter 6 and so the the believers in Rome you and i are called in verses 6 to 10 to know that we should no longer serve sin sin should no longer master us and be our master if the sun shall set you free you are free indeed Yeshua the Messiah said in John chapter 8 and therefore sin should no longer master us control us so now as verse 6 why because the old man our sinful nature died that's what he's really saying in verse 6 knowing that that our old man is crucified with him why that the body of sin might be destroyed in order that henceforth We should not serve sin.
We are called not to serve sin. Sin may come a time we fell into sin, but beloved brothers and sisters, sin should no longer be our master. Now you continue in verse 7. The sin nature have no power over the believer anymore. And so he said in verse 7. He that is dead or he that has died is freed from sin. So, again, when we have died in Christ, in a Messiah, a dead man does not react anymore. You know, when we go to a funeral service and before us we can see the coffin and the dead body in some cases. That person that have died he or she cannot nothing that one can do to them can affect them anymore and that's why that's how the Lord look at the believer that's why when we have accepted the Lord Jesus the Messiah and the Holy Spirit of God indwelling us and we receive the new nature we have really as he says here in verse 7 he that is dead is free freed from sin.
Again, I would like to belabor this a little bit. So again, we are asking ourselves the question, well, how come we still fall into sin? How come two believers who belong to the Lord fight? If they are both dead, why they fight? Or how come a local assembly, a local church that everybody is born again and belong to the Lord, how come they are splitting? And how come there are all sorts of things that happen in the. Of God's people one might ask and it's legit to ask well here is where we need to distinguish between our positional relationship with the Lord which is once and for all never need to be repeated when it's come to our justification we have been justified freely by his grace once and for all and so he he provided for us a justification given us a new nature a divine nature which cannot sin but we still have within us somehow we cannot even distinguish and understand that we still have the old nature and with this old nature we commit every sin that is under the face of this earth even believers.
Let me read you a verse that is kind of very puzzling in Galatians chapter 2 the apostle Paul said concerning. Himself in Galatians 2 and verse 20. You remember what Shaul Paul said concerning himself? He said, I am crucified with Christ. In other words, I'm dead. Nevertheless, I live. Now he's alive. Yet not I, but Christ liveth in me. So now Christ the Messiah, he lives through him or through Paul, Paul's life. And he said that the life which I now live, I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. You see, beloved brothers and sisters, we need grace from the Lord to grasp it.
Well, I'm dead with Christ. I've been crucified with Christ. But nevertheless, I'm still alive, Paul is saying. But now the life that I live, it's not I really, but it is Christ, the Messiah. That lives in me and the life that i live i live by the faith of the son of God who loved me and gave himself for me you see that dilemma that somehow we time need the Lord to help us actually we need the Lord all the time to help us to grasp it to understand it and to realize that really as far as God is concerned when Yeshua died the believer in Yeshua died in him therefore positionally and eternally we died in him and that old sinful nature cannot please God cannot even the righteous things that we do in the power of the old nature is not valuable before God as Isaiah said to our forefathers, the people of Israel, all our righteousnesses are filthy rags when they are coming from the old nature.
There's no power, no value in them. Filthy rags. That's why everything that we do must be in the power of the Spirit of God in a new nature. So someone might say, so if I live my life and Christ lives in me. So when I sin, who did it? Christ? Or the Holy Spirit did it? One might ask. Well, no, of course he didn't do it. Every time when we sin, it's my whole nature. Every time we fail, it is our own sin nature. God is holy. The Messiah Yeshua is holy. The Holy Spirit is called the Holy Spirit, Kadosh. So whenever we sin, it's always me.
We do anything for God it's always him it's always our blessed Lord in the power of the Spirit of God and that's why it is this doctrine of sanctification is very needful and even though we don't always grasp everything but the little that we grasp with the help of the Spirit of God it helps us to be more sensitive to the Spirit of and to be always a desire to lean on the Lord and to seek his mind as we walk here in this world. And so in verse 7, the same nature have no power over the believer any longer. Because the same nature, according to verse 6, the old nature, the old man is crucified.
And therefore, verse 7, for he that is dead is freed from sin. No dead person reacts to anything any longer. But we see that we can distinguish here with the help of the Lord between our positional position in Christ with the new nature, the divine nature that we have, practical day here in this world as we live here and as we are led by the Spirit of God to walk here in this world in the light of the new man we are able to please the Lord and to honor him here in this world so now notice that verses 8 a Romans 6 verses 8 9 and 10 Paul provides for the Romans additional information in verse 8 Union with Christ, union with the Mashiach, delivered us from sin's power.
And I'm reading verse 8. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. In other words, because we be dead with him, we identify with him, now if or since we be dead with him. We believe that we shall also live with him so we know that we are going to be with the Lord one day in heaven but even here now as we live here in this world with the help of the Lord with the help of the holy Spirit we can live our lives in a way that it is pleasing to the Lord as long that we are occupied with him and we knowing this in our mind that the the all man is crucified have died with him when we think of crucifixion we think of death so when he says in verse 6 knowing that our old man is crucified with him basically what he says knowing that our old man our old nature died with him died in him when Yeshua died it died as far as God is concerned positionally died.
But because we are still here left in this world, obviously there is that battle that is going on and the need of the Holy Spirit of God to help us. Now notice that he continues now in verse 9. The Messiah Jesus, the Lord Jesus, rose from the dead and death has no more power over him because he is now risen and ascended and gone to heaven. Death has no more power over the Lord. No more power over the Lord at all because the Lord Jesus the Messiah never sinned the wages of sin is death but he died on your behalf and on my behalf he died for our sin he was the just one and he died for the unjust one but now that he died for us the unjust one death has no more power over the Lord Jesus the Messiah because after he died for your sins and for my sins he was buried and he rose again and that's why verse Again, using the word knowing, knowing that Christ being raised from the dead, he dies no more.
Death has no more dominion over him. And if death has no more dominion over him, because he finished the work of redemption, the Lord Jesus rose from the dead and death has no more power over him. He died only once. And he died for my sins, for your sins, for the sin of the world. He died never to die anymore. And that's why in verse 10 of Romans chapter 6, for in that he died, he died unto sin once. Note that the word once is. But in that he live, he liveth unto God. He ever liveth. Was to make intercession for us he is now in heaven he's alive he never going to die anymore now you notice the word once here the word once in verse 10 for in that he died he died unto sin once very interesting because the apostle Paul is showing to us that what the the what happened in days of old before the Messiah came before the Lord Jesus the Messiah came, animals had to die again and again, repeatedly.
Now, of course, it's the same animal died once, but the animals, as a sacrifice, had to die to make atonement, to make kapara, lechaper in Hebrew, to cover sins, to atone for sins. But here we have the Lord Jesus the Messiah who came. He came and noticed that He died. Once. For in that he died, he died unto sin one time, one time. He once and for all put away sin from before the Lord once and for all. You remember we read in John 1:29, "Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world." He deal with the question of sin altogether. And once and for all, when he died once, he put it away from before the presence of the Lord.
You remember what the Hebrew author said in Hebrews chapter 10 and verse 14? We do read, for by one offering he has perfected forever them that are sanctified. You see, beloved brothers and sisters, the believers in our Lord Jesus the Messiah have been perfected. Forever through the once and for all offerings of Christ, of the Messiah. And that's why Paul is saying in verse 10, for in that he died, he died unto sin once, one time. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. The wages of sin is death. Well, he died once. But in that he is alive now. He liveth unto God. And that's what the whole point here, that because he lives, those that belong to him are called to, because he lives, those that belong to him are called to live for him.
And that's why in verses 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, one of us who belong to the Lord Jesus the Messiah are called to know that we no longer should allow sin to be our master. And it flows out right from the beginning of the chapter 6 of Romans. What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid! Reading verses 9 and 10, knowing that Christ being raised from the dead, he dies no more. Death has no more dominion over him. Verse 10, for in that he died, he died unto sin once, but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. And just like the Lord is living now to God, we, the believers, those of us that belong to him, are called to live unto God.
To seek to to present our bodies a living sacrifice and to live our life in a way that it is pleasing to the Lord and so beloved brothers and sisters in the first 10 verses now of Romans chapter 6 verses 1 to 10 we learn two things verses 1 to 5 each one is believer need to know that he or she are dead to sin When Christ died, when the Messiah died, we died in him. Secondly, in verses 6 to 10, every believer is called to know that he or she are no longer called to serve sin. Sin used to be our master, but now that because we are in Christ, in the Messiah, in him, we are called now to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord, master.
As we have already read in John chapter 8, where Yeshua said, and I'll just read this verse one more time, in John chapter 8, where we read in verse 34. But the Son abides forever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. So now that we have covered the first 10 verses of Romans chapter 10, let's just go to verse 11 because we read verse 11 as well. And beloved brothers and sisters, in verse 11, there's only one verse that deals with the thought of reckoning. Now that he explained in the first 10 verses, that those that belong to the Lord Jesus the Messiah now died to sin and sin is no longer to be their master now in verse 11 the believer in the Lord Jesus the Messiah need to reckon to reckon or to consider it true what he already presented before us in the first 10 verses Consider that true.
We know it in our mind. These are fundamental truths that is presented before us because we are in Christ Jesus, in the Mashiach, Yeshua. We are new creation. And that positionally we belong to him. Positionally God looks at us as saints, as set apart for him, as holy people, as people that are. Without any blemish because of the work of Christ forgiven but we are still here in this world and because we are here in this world and we still haven't gone to glory we still have the old nature and we have this struggle day by day now in order to be able to successfully please the Lord and not to allow sin to be our master we are to reckon and that's very interesting and this verse mention read verse 11 Romans 6 and verse 11 likewise in the same manner as you are called to know that as as many of us as were baptized put into Jesus Christ we were baptized into his death now that we know it in our mind now recognize this and reckon it consider it true in your hearts in verse 11 likewise take into account or reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord now it's a matter of reckoning it and to reckon it or considering the Hebrew word is.
Hey you, you know, when you say be in your eyes, what you see in your own mind, your own heart, reckon it true. Reckon it really. That is exactly what happened. Reckon it in your heart. Consider it to be true. Realize this in your heart that that is exactly what happened. That's it. We belong to the Lord. That's it. We are linked with Him. It we are new creation that's it we are born again that's it we are born from above that's it nothing will change it we cannot reverse it we belong to the Lord we've been chosen in the Messiah before before the foundation of the world in time the Spirit of God worked at us that we will realize that we are sinners and confess our sins In time, we realize by the help of the Spirit of God that the only answer for our sins is Yeshua, Jesus, the Messiah.
And once we belong to Him, we are a new creation. Now, reckon it true practically. And that's why verse 11 is a very important verse. Likewise, in the same manner as you are to know positionally what you are positioning in Christ, in the Messiah, well, reckon that. You also, and we reckon it in our hearts and our eyes, you know, what someone is thinking of himself or herself, well, we are to reckon it in our hearts and in our eyes that yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. In other words, make it real. Your lives Paul is saying today to the Romans make it real in your appropriated in life make sure as it says here in in verse 11 to to we are to reckon ourselves dead to sin when we are when we are we how do we respond to all the temptation that all that which happened here in this world how do we react to it to consider it true that we are dead to sin and act upon it in day-by-day life.
That is the battle. This is exactly what is the battle that is going on, beloved brothers and sisters, in the life of the believer every day. Every day. Turn to Galatians for a moment. Galatians. Galatians chapter 2. We read this verse already. But let me read it again. Galatians chapter 2 verse 19 and verse 20. The apostle Paul is speaking. He says in verse 19, for I through the law am dead to the law. What happened? The law, the holy Torah that God had given Israel and the holy word of God that God had given for mankind only revealed that I'm not holy, that I'm a sinner. The law condemned me every time and showing God be merciful to me a sinner.
And when God said in his law, I'll give you just look at the 10 commandments, the first 10 of the 613 that are found in the Tanakh, in the Torah. You shall have no other God before me. Just go through the list of the 10. You shall not do this and that every one of them we violated without exception so the law condemned us now the law was not given to save Israel but the law was given to either to show Israel as a mirror to show how holy God is and is given as a guide how to live a life that is pleasing to God But because one could never fulfill all the requirements of the law, the sacrificial system was available.
So when sin came, in order for sin to be atoned for, an animal had to be killed on behalf of the sinner, on behalf of Israel. That's why the whole sacrificial system was part of the law. You may be, that we are imperfect people. And the law was given to show the holiness of God, the purity of God. But as a mirror, it shows us how impure we are. But graciously, God says, yes, I know that you are impure, but I love you, and I know who you are. Therefore I have provided for you a way to receive forgiveness that's why I have given to you the sacrificial system of the animals that will die to point to the Mashiach that will come in the fullness of the time and he will not only lechapeh not only kaveh sin but he will take away completely sin from the presence of God and in the fullness of the time the Mashiach Yeshua came made of a woman made under the law He lived under the law himself.
He was the only one who fulfilled the law. And so Paul is saying in Galatians 2:19, he said, "For I through the law am dead to the law." Why? Because the law killed me because the law is holy and I'm a sinner. The problem is not with the law. Let us always remember God's law is pure. God's law is holy. God's law is righteous. The problem is not with God's law. The problem is with the sin nature that all of us possess. In sin did my mother conceive me. And therefore we read, why? The law killed me. I am dead to the law. But I should live unto God.
Why? Because now I am in Christ, in the Mashiach. The Mashiach came. The sacrifice has been offered. The Messiah has come. He provided for my relationship with God. And so now in verse 20, he says, I'm now undead with the Messiah. Nevertheless, I live, yet not I, but the Messiah, but Christ lives in me. And the life which I now live, I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me, Paul says. And therefore, beloved brothers and sisters, Each one that belongs to the Lord, Yeshua, Jesus, the Messiah, are not only to know this, in our mind, that we are crucified with the Messiah, that this old man is dead with the Messiah, but also to reckon it.
Romans 6 and verse 11. To reckon it in our heart as true. Consider it to take it into account that ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin but alive unto God through Yeshua HaMashiach through Jesus the Messiah our Lord to reckon it and therefore the apostle Paul is a leading on with the truth of sanctification to set the believers to set apart the believer in a practical way to live for the Lord here in this world so if we will just close with this the first question that was asked before we will arrive now later on to the second question shall we continue in sin that grace may abound what shall we say then shall we continue in sin that grace may abound The answer is no.
God forbid. You have to know in your mind that we have been immersed into Christ, into the Messiah. We have to know in our mind that the old man is dead, has died, when Yeshua the Messiah died. And when he is alive now, we have to live our life for the pleasure of the Lord. Battle here, these two natures of ours, struggling one with another. Well, 1 John 1 verse 9 tells us, when we sin, if any man said that he sinned not, he's a liar. So when we sin, and we do, not to justify ourselves, but we are to confess it before the Lord. If we sin, we can go to the throne of grace.
If any man sin, as 1 John 1, and I will close that with this, 1 John chapter 1 and verse 9 and we can just close the meeting with this beloved brothers and sisters it says in verse 9 if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness if we say that we have not sinned we make him a liar and his word is not in us what an amazing lesson to learn so we are to know in our mind. And we are to reckon in our hearts day by day as we walk here in this world. May the Lord help us with these uneasy, not an easy to understand subject, but may the Lord help us to learn those things and to appropriate to our life as we study together the Word of God.
Well, my dear friends and dear brothers and sisters, God bless you. We will stop here in verse 11. Romans chapter 6. Until the next time, we will say to you, shalom, shalom. But before we say shalom, let's just give thanks to the Lord. And so, Abba, Father, thank you for your word. Thank you for the Spirit of God which you have given to us. Help us to understand this portion of Scripture. Not easy to understand. Pray for every one of us that have heard the message that you will help him or her to understand your word the Holy Spirit of God. We pray in the name of Yeshua HaMashiach.
Amen and Amen. God bless you, my friend. Shalom, shalom. You
