Shabbat Shalom everyone. In a few more days, just around the corner, our people Israel will be gathering to various synagogues around the world, beginning in the city of Jerusalem, all the way throughout all the countries including this country in which we are finding ourselves now in Canada and they will gather together to celebrate you might say or we can call it a little bit differently to keep a certain feast that is called Yom Kippur or Yom HaKippurim this is a very solemn feast for our people Jewish people take it very seriously they long to have forgiveness of sins from God therefore they will confess their sins they will repent before the Lord they will spend much time in the synagogue they will fast, they will afflict their bodies they will afflict their souls desiring to receive forgiveness from the Lord this is of course an instruction that was given to our people already years ago when Israel left the land of Egypt and just before they even entered into the promised land God gave Israel instruction in the book of Leviticus concerning the Day of Atonement.
I would like today to deal with this special occasion from a few verses in the Word of God. First of all, from Leviticus chapter 16. Secondly, from Matthew chapter 27. And thirdly, from Hebrews chapter 9. And so if you please open your Bibles to these three passages, beginning today with Leviticus chapter 16. Now the reason that we read that passage every year on Yom Kippur, on the Day of Atonement, it is because for us as believers, it is important to search the Scripture, go throughout the Word of God, The Tanakh, the Old Testament, the Berit HaChadashah, the New Testament. For us as believers in Yeshua, the Messiah, we are to learn from the Scripture and to find out what lessons we can learn from the Word of God and how we can appropriate what God has provided for us through the person of Yeshua, Jesus, the Messiah.
In Leviticus chapter 16, the first 14 verses, We have these early instructions that already God had given to Moses for Aaron, his son, and for the rest of the nation of Israel. And listen to those words. Verse 1, And the Lord spoke unto Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered before the Lord and died. And the Lord said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron, thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil before the mercy seat which is upon the ark that he die not for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat thus shall Aaron come into the holy place with a young bullock for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering and he shall put on the holy linen coat and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh and he shall be girded with a linen girdle and with the linen mitre shall he be attired these are holy garments therefore shall he wash his flesh in water and so put them on and he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering And Aaron shall offer his bulak of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself and for his house.
And he shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. and Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats, one lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat, le'azazel in Hebrew. And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell and offer him for a sin offering, but the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord to make an atonement with him and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness. And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering which is for himself and shall make an atonement for himself and for his house and shall kill the bullock of the sin offering which is for himself.
And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the Lord, and his hand full of sweet incense, bitten small, and bring it within the veil. And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the testimony that he die not. And notice verse 14. And he shall take of the blood of the bullock and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times. In fact, let me continue just to read a few more verses.
verse 15 then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring his blood within the veil and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bulak and sprinkle it upon the mercy seed and before the mercy seed and he shall make an atonement for the holy place because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel and because of their transgression in all their sins, and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness. I read from verses 1 to verse 16 of Leviticus chapter 16. Now hold please your page here and turn with me to Matthew chapter 27.
And there I want to read that passage that speaks about the death of Yeshua, Hamashiach, on the tree. And we read in Matthew chapter 27 and verse 45. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Yeshua cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama shvaktani. That is to say, my God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Some of the men that stood there when they heard that said, this man is calling for Eliyahu. And straightway one of them ran and took a sponge and filled it with vinegar and put it upon a reed and gave him to drink.
The rest said, let be, let us see whether Eliyahu will come to save him. Yeshua, when he cried again with a loud voice, he yielded up the spirit. Notice verse 51. And behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom, and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent. And then verse 54. When the centurion and they that were with him watching Yeshua saw the earthquake, And those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying truly, this was the Son of God. Achen Zehaya ben Elohim. Then please put your finger in this passage. And I want to read Hebrews chapter 9.
And there I'm reading verse 1. Then, verily, the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service and an earthly sanctuary. Verse 6, now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God, but into the second, this is the Holy of Holies, Went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the errors of the people. The Holy Spirit is signifying that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest. Then verse 11. But the Mashiach, being come a high priest of good things to come, by greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building, of this creation, neither by the blood of goats, of elves, but by his own blood, he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
For if the blood of bulls and of goats and the ashes of hyphers sprinkling the unclean, sanctifying to the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Mashiach, who through the eternal Spirit offer himself without spot to God, Purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God. And for this cause he is the mediator of the new covenant, that by the means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. This is the reading for this ministry meeting today, which began in Leviticus chapter 16, went on to Matthew chapter 27, and concluded with Hebrews chapter 9.
It is such an amazing time, beloved brothers and sisters, in which we live in today. Think about it, Jewish people, my own family, throughout the whole world. Today is actually the sixth of the first months of the Jewish New Year, the month of Tishrei. Four more days on the tenth of the month, the gathering of all the people of Israel and all the Jewish community around the world to celebrate or to keep Yom HaKippurim, the Day of Atonement. We are living right in between those ten days of Oz. On the first day of the month of Tishrei, Rosh Hashanah, the Feast of Trumpet, the Shofar was blown.
Israel was awakened to take seriously, thinking of the time in which they are going to be standing before the Lord on the tenth day of the month of Tishrei, where God will seal their name, whether they will be inscribed in the Book of the Living, or whether they will die during this coming year. And therefore, our Jewish people take it very seriously because they know on the Day of Atonement, Yom HaKippurim, they need their sins forgiven. And so the instruction for Leviticus chapter 16 are vividly very important for every one of us as we study the Word of God to learn how important the Day of Atonement was not only for Israel, but for God Himself.
With some earlier, we talked about the eternal destiny of humanity. Whether somebody is going to live eternally in a relationship with the Lord, in glory, in the presence of God in heaven, or whether somebody will have to be denied entrance into the presence of God and live eternally outside of the presence of the Lord. And all these depend upon the fact if one have accepted God's way, have accepted the blood that was shed by Yeshua the Messiah. In fact, we find out that the Lord Yeshua the Messiah mentioned concerning himself, he says, I came down to this world not to do my own will, but to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his work.
The reason that Yeshua came down to this world is to accomplish all what God had given to us throughout Scripture. he fulfilled that when he died on that Roman cross he was buried and he rose again and he's now seated at the right hand of the majesty on high that everyone that have trusted in him confessed his or her sin can receive forgiveness of sins and eternal inheritance and God gave us in a picture form you might say in his word a clear guideline on how can Israel and all the nations of the world can receive a right relationship with the Lord himself. Yom HaKippurim really presents before us the coming days that the Messiah in the fullness of time will give himself a ransom for many.
And so you notice how we begin in this 16th chapter you notice first of all that before the Mashiach Yeshua came to this world there was a restriction for the people of Israel how they could approach God. You notice immediately in chapter 16 and verses 1 and 2 that the Lord said to Moshe to instruct Aaron the high priest and he said to him in verse 1 and 2 the Lord said unto Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron he said when they offered before the Lord and they died and the Lord said unto Moses speak unto Aaron thy brother that he come not at all time into the holy place within the veil before the mercy seat upon which the ark is there that he die not for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.
Aaron could not approach the presence of God at any time. There was a distance, there was a restriction between God in the Holy of Holies and Aaron and the rest of the nation of Israel. And God gave this instruction to Moses to give it to his brother and why is it? It's because earlier, already the sons of Aaron offered a strange fire. We read it in Leviticus chapter 10. And God striked them and they died on the spot. Because they approached the Lord in their own way instead of coming to the Lord and his instruction that he had given unto them. And the Lord said unto Moses, he said, you tell to Aaron, he cannot come at all time.
And if he come at any time he would come that is not in accordance with my will, he will die. notice that he used this expression that he died not in verse 2 why?
because God is going to be there I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat and if you will have for a moment the picture of the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant in a moment you're going to sit right in between you notice the two cherubim there here is the Ark of the Covenant the lid that is upon the Ark of the Covenant called the kaporet the mercy seat in between the cherubim God would be present there on the day of atonement when Aaron will enter in to make an atonement for the sins of the nation of Israel and so Aaron could not come anytime he couldn't come any week he
won't to any day there was a set period of time once a year when Aaron could come and it would be on the 10th day of the month of Tishrei not on the 9th day, not on the 8th day, not on the 7th day and not on the 11th or the 12th but it must be on that one single day and he's coming only once there to make atonement for himself or for the nation of Israel secondly beloved brothers and sisters you notice that in verse 3, 4 and 5 even when Aaron would come in he couldn't come just like that there was a preparation he had to prepare himself before he even come in
you notice what it says in verse 3 he would prepare first of all for himself he would take a young bullock notice it says thus shall Aaron come here's the instruction Moses you tell it to Aaron thus shall Aaron come into the holy place first of all he will bring a young bulak for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering immediately you notice that there was a necessity for an animal to be killed and blood had to be shed and to be brought within the veil this is first of all for Aaron himself never mind the rest of the nation of Israel and so it says in verse 4 Aaron shall be
clothed completely with white garment you will notice beloved brothers and sisters and I remember this as well when our family would go to the synagogue on the day of atonement we would dress with white clothes white garment white shoes everything would be white because it speaks of purity and cleanliness because we are coming to the presence of the Lord well Aaron notice what he had to do in In verse 4 we read, notice that it said that he had to specially wear a special garment that I uniquely wore on that Yom HaKippurim.
Four things you notice in verse 4. It says a holy linen coat. The word for linen is bad in Hebrew. It simply means white coat. In Hebrew we say kutonet bad. Secondly, you notice it says linen breeches. This is the pants. Michnasei bad in Hebrew. Thirdly, you notice linen girdle. This is something that he will wear on the top part of the body. In Hebrew, we call it avnet bad. And finally, linen miter. Even upon his head, he will wear a miter, mitznefet bad. it would be a white hat that he will wear so when Aaron would prepare himself to enter into the presence of God on the day of atonement Yom HaGipurim he will not come with the ordinary clothes that he wears every day but he will come totally with the white linen garments entering into the presence of God into the Holy of Holies notice it is called in verse 4 these are the holy garments and even before he will wear those garments according to verse 4 he has to wash his flesh with water and then put the garments upon his body why?
because Aaron of course is going to represent the people of Israel as the high priest he is going to appear before him to make an atonement therefore he must be ready himself cleansed himself white garments for himself to present the nation of Israel in the holy of holies and then beloved brothers and sisters after he prepared the blood of the bullock and the ram for himself then he will have to take for the people of Israel two goats and one ram we read this in verse 5 and he shall take for the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of goats for a sin offering and one for a burnt offering you notice how interesting these two offerings that are found in Leviticus chapter 1 2, 3, 4 and 5 the burnt offering the Ola in Hebrew that which rises to God and satisfies God's righteous requirement and secondly for a sin offering Chata'a for the people of Israel who have sinned before the Lord, though they were God's chosen people.
And so we read the instruction on the preparation, how Aaron is to appear before the Lord on Yom HaKippurim. And in verses 6 to 10, the Lord gives instruction to Aaron what to do with those sacrifices, the bullocks and the goats and the other sacrifice, the ram, what he's going to do with it. Look at this, brothers and sisters, first of all in verse 6 Aaron will make an atonement for himself and for his own household why because Aaron was still a sinner like anyone else from the rest of the nation of Israel yes he was from the tribe of Levi yes he was the head of a family yes he was a privileged person but he still had sin in him and if he is going to appear before the Lord he must first of all deal with himself and so you notice brothers and sisters in verse 6 Aaron shall offer his bullock for a sin offering which is for himself and then he will make atonement for himself and for his own house You see, it is amazing.
He first of all had to kill an animal and appropriate the blood of this animal for himself. Secondly, you notice in verse 7 and 8, Aaron will present the two goats that is for the nation of Israel before the Lord. It says in verse 7 and 8, He shall take the two goats and he will present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats, one for the Lord and the other for the scapegoat. And you see, he is now going to bring those two goats that are going to deal with the sin of the nation of Israel.
But before he is going to kill this animal, One of them is going to present them before the Lord. Two goats. One of them, of course, will be for the Lord and this animal, this goat, will be killed. And the other one will be for scapegoat. In Hebrew we call it le'azazel, is to be taken and sent away to an uninhabited place, to the wilderness where no one will see that animal anymore. And beloved brothers and sisters, In these two goats, we have a very beautiful description of the work of the Mashiach that was going to come from that time. He came already, as far as we know, and then it's a representation of what he has done.
The first goat, you notice, and I'm going to read now verses 9 and 10, you notice what he's going to do in verse 9. It says that Aaron shall bring the goat which the Lord's lot fell, and he will offer it for a sin offering. This first goat will be offered, will be killed, the blood will be shed and that will be shed on behalf of the sin that the nation of Israel have committed. But look at the second goat in verse 10. The goat which the lot failed to be the scapegoat, Leazazel, it says that it shall be presented alive. Notice verse 10, before the Lord to make an atonement with him and to let him go for escape into the wilderness.
And what we really see here is so precious because in these verses we learn of what God was telling the people of Israel, our very own people. He says, listen, these two goats represent the two aspects of the work that Yeshua the Messiah will accomplish for you in a future day.
the first thing he's going to die his blood had to be shed later on Aaron will sprinkle it upon the mercy seat in the Holy of Holies but the second God will be sent away will be sent far away from the presence of God to represent the fact that sins will be totally removed from the presence of God and it depicts for us beautifully the work that Yeshua the Messiah had accomplished for us well notice a verse in the book of Psalm Psalm 103 we read it actually every year together beloved brothers and sisters you should know that verse by heart by now in Psalm 103 and verse 12 David the king of Israel the
sweet psalmist of Israel said these words as far as the east is from the west so far hath he removed our transgressions from us God hath removed as far as the east is from the west he removed our shame our transgressions from before his face he removed it away from us as far as the east is from the west so beautiful it says in verse 13 Israel David said you see what God have done for us when we have approached him on the day of atonement as Aaron have done so on behalf of all the people of Israel God had removed as far as the east is from the west our transgression from among us
beloved brothers and sisters we can see how beautiful it is speak to us of the work of the Mashiach that when he will come in the fullness of time which he did he gonna please God by laying down his life on the altar by shedding his precious blood by providing redemption but as far as the east is from the west all our sins and our iniquities and our transgressions had been removed from the presence of the Lord.
All what we learn here in type and in picture is of the work that the Messiah was going to accomplish later on when the Messiah would come as He promised to the people of Israel. And we know that He has come and that He had fulfilled those promises that He had promised. Look at Isaiah chapter 38 And there we read another aspect of the work of the Messiah with respect to sin. In verse 17 of Isaiah chapter 38, we find out that God hath cast the sin of that individual. As the prophet is speaking, he says in verse 17b, he says, Thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.
See, God does not look anymore at the sins of the people who had received forgiveness from him. He cast us behind his back, never to look at this anymore. But of course we see here, it is a type and a picture and a shadow of the work of the Messiah, that the sins of those that are trusted in the Lord, they're sins that be cast all the way behind his back. And of course, you know very well the passage that we read in the book of Michah, Micah. One more verse I need to read here together about Micah. Look at the prophet Micah, chapter 7 and verse 19.
This is very well practiced today among our people, the Day of Atonement. In chapter 7 and verse 19, we read these words, He will turn again. He will have compassion upon us. He will subdue our iniquities and you shall cast all their sins into the depth of the sea. You see how precious it is that the Israeli of old had had to learn and had by experience through the sacrificial system, he understood that the sins have been removed as far as the east is from the west and that God has cast their sins behind his back and that he has actually placed all their sins into the depth of the sea.
But that is when the blood had to be shed. An atonement was made and a covering of the sins by the precious blood of the lambs and the rams and the goats that have been offered and specifically on the Day of Atonement. But as you know very well, beloved brothers and sisters, today when our own people gather together in various synagogues, there is no blood mentioned there whatsoever. There is no sacrificial system whatsoever. There is not a priest there to enter into the Holy of Holies. Why? Because there is no temple or there is no tabernacle existing today. And the reason that there is no tabernacle and temple existing today is because in the fullness of time, the Messiah has come.
And the Messiah became the one that took upon himself the sin of this world. And so if you just go back to Leviticus chapter 16, you will notice how many times blood was mentioned in this text. And we continue on in the verses which I have read, And I'm just going to highlight the times that the word blood is mentioned in this passage. In chapter 16 of Leviticus and verse 14, it says, And he shall take of the blood of the bullock. In verse 14b, it says, And he will sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward, and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger.
seven times. Now again I want you to look at this. This is the Ark of the Covenant. Here we see the Ark of the Covenant. That Ark of the Covenant was placed in the Holy of Holies.
And Aaron would enter into the Holy of Holies once a year on the tenth day of the month of Tishrei and he will take the blood and he will sprinkle it and notice right between the cherubim on the mercy seat as we read in verse 14 that he will sprinkle it upon the mercy seat and before the mercy seat and he will sprinkle the blood with his fingers seven times and the number seven of course speak to us of the numbers of completeness full number it will satisfy the righteous requirement of a holy God with respect to sin because how can God dwell in the midst of a sinful nation unless sin will be judged
and therefore the blood has to be sprinkled upon the mercy seat and notice these two cherubim they are representing the holiness of God and the Bible shows us that they're covering their heads in a sense recognizing that there in the midst of the cherubim God himself is present and if you remember inside the ark of this covenant inside there was the three things the ten commandments was there which Israel failed to keep and you and I also you have the jar of manna which represent the food that God provided for Israel the nation during the wilderness and you also had inside that ark of the covenant Aaron's rod which budded and in all these three
emblems it represents the Messiah the only one that fulfilled God's law the Ten Commandments he's the only one that said of himself I am the bread that came down from heaven represented by the manna by the man and he's the only one who has been resurrected from among the dead you remember what he said in scripture on the third day I will rise again that budded rod represents the resurrection of the Mashiach or the Messiah who rose from among the dead and so we really can learn from these beloved brothers and sisters that here what Aaron have done sprinkling the blood upon the ark of the covenant between the cherubim there upon the mercy seat
he's now satisfied the righteous requirement of a holy God with respect to sin blood had to be shed life had to be taken away a substitute had to die for the rest of the nation to experience and to receive forgiveness of sins and that's why every year after year after year because the blood was shed and God had been satisfied he could maintain his presence in the midst of a people who are sinful by nature just like us as well how can God dwell in the midst of his own people they fail so much even though they are saved there are still people who fail and sin and it is always upon the basis of
the blood that he can maintain to be in the midst of his people but all this was a foreshadow a foreshadow of the time when a Messiah will come and that when he will come he will deal once and for all with the question of sin and there will be no longer need to repeat this again and again and so in the fullness of time please turn with me to Matthew chapter 27 in the fullness of time finally the Mashiach came and when the Messiah came his name is Yeshua he was born to the virgin Miriam in the city of Bethlehem exactly as it was prophesied through the Hebrew prophets.
Miriam, according to Isaiah chapter 7 verse 14, was the one that gave birth to the Mashiach, to the Messiah. She had to go to Bethlehem and to give birth exactly as Micah 5 prophesied that he will be born in the city that is called Bethlehem, Ephrata. But also the Hebrew prophet spoke of the fact that the Mashiach not only going to be born to a virgin Miriam, not only going to be born in the city of Bethlehem, not only going to live a life of purity, but he has to become a substitute. He has to make an atonement for Israel and for the nations of the world. And so for this reason Yeshua came, and that's why he says in John chapter 6, I came down from heaven not to do mine own will, but to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his work.
And so we arrive to Matthew chapter 27. And in chapter 27, they took Yeshua and they scourged him and they mocked him and they rejected him. Whether it is the religious leaders of our nation, Israel, or whether it is the Roman soldiers, or whether it is the malefactors around him, or whether it is all the population that were there, and if he would come today, you and I will do the very same thing. But then they finally placed him on a cross. And as we read here, look at this, beloved brothers and sisters, the passage that we read in Matthew chapter 27 is a very moving passage, Because here we see the real fulfillment of Leviticus chapter 16 on the Day of Atonement, on Yom HaKippurim.
Here we are in the land, and Yeshua is on the tree. He's already on the tree for three hours. He suffered from the hand of men. As we already can read earlier in the passage, as it says in verse 35, And they crucified him. By the time we get to verse 45, he was already three hours on the cross suffering from the hand of men. But it's not only that he had to suffer from the hand of men, he had to suffer from the hand of a righteous God who needed to deal with the question of sin. And that's why he sent the Messiah, the Mashiach, down to this earth.
And it says in verse 45, From the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. You notice, beloved brothers and sisters, this darkness that have overshadowed the whole land of Israel in these days was another word that no one will ever be able to enter in towards God, the holy God is going to do with this man. While he was the eternal son of God, here we see him as men. Yeshua HaMashiach as men, a perfect man being hung by others upon the cross. And here now God as a judge is judging the very one who is going to be a substitute for the rest of the nations of the world.
Just the same like we have seen that Aaron have entered into the holy place to place the blood within the veil between the cherubim upon that Ark of the Covenant, upon the mercy seat. Why? Because God needed to deal with the question of sin. All this was a type and a picture but now in Matthew chapter 27 come the Messiah, come the Mashiach to fully fulfill what God had desired from him to do. And so notice that for three hours from the sixth hour Till the ninth hour, God laid upon this man, Yeshua, the sin and sins of this world. And can you imagine, brothers and sisters and dear friends, all the sin of this world.
And all, not only the sin nature, but the results of this sin nature. The sins that we have committed, every one of us. And every one of these people who have ever lived upon the face of this earth, from Adam in the Garden of Eden until the last day that we live at the end of the Messianic age, God had to place upon these men all the iniquities and all the sin of this world upon these men that is called Yeshua, salvation. And notice that for three hours he's hanging there upon a cross, upon a tree. No one could look upon it. Darkness on the face of all the land.
And there at the ninth hour Yeshua cried with a loud voice and he said, Eli! Eli! My God! My God! Why? Lama! Why hast thou forsaken me? Lama shvaktani, lama azavtani. Why, God? He was actually quoting Psalm 22, where God has already described his cry. That David already prophetically spoke about it, where we read in that Psalm, the 22nd Psalm, Eli, Eli, my God, my God, why has thou forsaken me? And you notice the psalmist gives an answer that Yeshua really knew. He said, for thou art holy, thou did inhabitest the praises of Israel. God is holy. God cannot look upon sin. Sin has to be judged.
And if God will not judge someone else, he will judge you and I, he will judge mankind. That's why it was necessary for blood to be shed, for life to be taken away. And Yeshua cried with that loud voice, fulfilling exactly what was told through the psalmist of Israel in Psalm 22. Elohi, Elohi, Eli, Eli, lama azavtani, why has thou forsaken me? Beloved brothers and sisters, he had to be forsaken. Can you imagine? I mean, we never can grasp it. We really can't understand it. How can a holy God forsake this man who was always pleasing to him? Who have never sinned? Who have never done anything wrong?
Who said, I came to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his work? How can he do this to him? Well, he had to do this to him because otherwise none of us will ever be able to be saved. Otherwise you and I will never have any hope. Because he will have to judge us for the sin nature that we have and the sins that we have committed throughout our lives. But he laid all these sins and sins upon the person of his son. And so you notice, brothers and sisters, the people that stood there, When they heard that cry, they said, because he called Eli, or Elohi in Hebrew, they thought he's calling to Eliyahu, same name, Eli, Eli, Eliyahu.
So they thought he's calling for Eliyahu, not understanding that he was not calling for Eliyahu, but he was crying to God, and he's saying, my God, my God, Eli, Eli, lama azavtani, why you have left me, why you forsook me. One of them ran and put a sponge and filled it with vinegar and put it on the reed and gave him the drink. The rest said, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him. But Elijah could not save him. No one could save him. In fact, we read in the other gospel, he saved others. Himself, he could not save. He could not save himself, so you and I will be able to be saved and forgiven.
And so notice the cry of Yeshua HaMashiach at the end of this passage. It says that Yeshua, verse 50, when he had cried again with a light voice, he yielded up the spirit. He died. Notice, he allowed his own human spirit to be laid down. He yielded up. No one took it away from him. He gave over himself. He laid down his life. The judgment of God fell upon him, and he himself laid down his life. He yielded up the spirit. And so, when he yielded up his spirit, John 19 says that he cried, It is finished. He finished the work of redemption. No longer there is a need to go with an animal and to bring the blood into the Holy of Holies and to sprinkle it between the cherubim upon that mercy seat anymore because he had finished the work on the tree.
Salvation had been completed. The Mashiach paid for the sin of this world. And when that was done, beloved brothers and sisters, now God could open the door. And no longer, like in Leviticus chapter 16, which Aaron no longer could enter within the veil, and once a year only, with all those restrictions, and Aaron had to bring blood for himself, blood for the nation of Israel, blood for his family. Here we find out that God had been satisfied. Redemption had been complete. Notice it says in Matthew 27 and verse 51, that the veil of the temple was rent in twain. It was rent. In other words, the way to enter in now, the door was open, and the door to enter into the immediate presence of God is now open.
And it's not that man opened it, but God opened it. It said that it was rent in twain from the top to the bottom, In other words, God himself, you might say, ripped that veil and made it possible for men to enter into the immediate presence of God. And it is all because of Yeshua's work and Yeshua's death as a substitute on the tree.
And when all these events happened there, the centurion that was there said in verse 54, he says, truly this was the son of God oh yes he received a special revelation from the Lord to realize that it's not only that he was a son of man Ben Adam Yeshua from Nazareth but he was more than just a man he was the eternal son of God who became a man and made it possible for humanity to receive salvation by giving himself over a ransom for many and how wonderful for us as we think about Yom HaKippurim you and I have been so blessed to know Yeshua the Messiah as our Savior and our Lord and our
Mashiach who forgave our sins and made it possible for us to enter into the immediate presence of God no longer the need of repetition of blood again and blood again and blood again every day, every week, every month, every year no longer the need of animals blood because the blood of God's son Yeshua the Messiah cleanses us from all sin and so the writer to the first century Hebrew believers wrote them and now please turn with me to Hebrews chapter 9 he's explaining to his own brethren how important to understand what the Mashiach have done and that's why he's saying to them in chapter 9 verse 1 Look at this, brothers and sisters.
He says, then verily in the first covenant, that is the law, had also ordinances of divine service and an earthly sanctuary. Israel is saying to these Jewish believers, he says, do you remember what happened in the past history of our people? When God gave our people the law, he gave us divine instruction. he said that there was an earthly sanctuary and here is one of the articles that were in the earthly sanctuary the ark of the covenant he says do you remember this hebrew believers in yeshua hamashiach we know it from our own history he's saying to them when god gave our people the lord chapter 9 verse 1 of the book of hebrews there were all sort of ordinances of divine service one of the divine services was simply for Aaron to come once a year of the tenth day of the month of Tishrei to make an atonement for the nation of Israel.
But then notice what he says in verse 6. He continues and he says in verse 6, Now, when these things were thus ordained, when God ordained those things, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, this is priests plural, accomplishing the service of God. They went into the tabernacle. They went to the holy place. There was the menorah there. There was the table of showbread. There was the altar of incense. And they went every time, those priests, and they did their service. They light the menorah. They put incense on the altar of incense. They put the bread every Shabbat, replaced the bread, and so on. They did all these services.
Then he says in verse 7 of Hebrews chapter 9, But, he says, to the second went the high priest only. The second means the Holy of Holies. He went alone and only once every year. And then he mentioned that. Notice that? He says, but not without blood, which was offered first of all for himself and then for the errors or for the sins of the people. And then it says in verse 8, the Holy Spirit, this signifying that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest. You see what he was saying, beloved brothers and sisters? The Hebrew writer who wrote to the Hebrew believers of first century, you remember, brothers and sisters, how in the past history God had given our people those instructions?
And how the priests worked and did all the service in the holy place. And how only the high priest, Aaron, or anyone that followed him, only he could enter into the holy of holies. And he couldn't do it at any time. He had to come only once every year. And even when he came, if you remember, he's saying to those Hebrew believers, he had to come with blood in his hand. The blood of an innocent animal and offered that first of all for himself and then for the rest of the nation of Israel. Must blood be shed? Yes. Could Aaron come at any time? No.
He had to follow the instructions that were given under the law to the people of Israel. The Hebrew writer is instructing and he says, notice what he says in the first part of verse 8. The Holy Spirit was speaking. And he was saying that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest. In other words, it was speaking to the nation. It says, no, no, no, we cannot go yet into the holy of holies. No, we cannot go yet into the holy. Only the high priest and only once a year and always with blood for himself and for the rest of the nation of Israel.
Signifying that the way into the Holy of Holies was not yet open. There was a restriction. There was a distance. And if you remember, beloved brothers and sisters, when Yeshua was on earth some 2,000 years ago, when he came into the temple in the city of Jerusalem, he had to go through various courts before he arrived further in.
He was not from the tribe of Levi, therefore he could not go into the Holy of Holies because he was from the tribe of Judah but there was a court of the Gentiles then there was a court of the Hebrew women then there was a court of the Hebrew men and then there was a court of the priests and then the Holy of Holies only the high priest could go in there was a distance can you imagine most of us here are not Jewish the Gentile world was far away as far from the Holy of Holies than any could ever be the Jewish women were a bit closer but far enough the Israeli men was
also a bit closer but still far enough and only the priests could get into the holy plan but only the high priest could enter in to the holy of holies to Kodesh HaKodeshim and he could not do it as he pleases at any time of the year only once a year on the 10th day of the month of Tishrei Yom HaKippurim and even then he couldn't come as he pleased he had to wear special clothes he had to wash his own body he had to bring blood in his hand and he had to offer the blood and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat and before the mercy seat seven times to appease the holiness of
God there was a distance and you know brothers and sisters listen you and I by nature and by practice far away from God and had God not reached us we would have been still far away from God because we were born in sin we have inherited a sin nature and God is holy God is righteous He cannot look upon sin He must judge sin and therefore we all Jew and Gentile alike were in a distance by nature but God made a way he made a way that we can come closer to him he made a way that our sins will be once and for all not only covered but he will remove the sins of
yours and mine he dealt with it once and for all through the person of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah so listen to these verses now brothers and sisters verse 11 of Hebrews chapter 9 just as we conclude these thoughts today notice in verse 7 it says to the second place to the Holy of Holies could only the high priest come once a year not without blood and now verse 11 he jumps and he says but in contrast to the high priest of Israel here we see the Mashiach but the Mashiach verse 11 being come and high priest of good things to come by a greater and a more perfect tabernacle not made with hand that
is to say not of this creation neither by the blood of goats and calves but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption for us you see again to remind you beloved brothers and sisters the writer to the Hebrews was writing to his brethren and they may have been very discouraged like some of us when we think and we look around we see our own people celebrating certain feasts and certain holidays but they never have assurance of salvation those brethren at that time because the writing was about 64 AD the temple was still existing the sacrificial system was still going on and some of the early Hebrew
believers were saying well should I continue to follow Yeshua the Messiah or should I go back to the temple and offer the sacrifices there and even on Yom Kippur have the high priest offer on behalf of me as well and the rest of the nation sacrifice and come into the Holy of Holies so the writer to these Hebrew believers says brethren listen you have so much more when you have the Mashiach in your heart and in your life in contrast with the high priest you have the Mashiach who became a high priest for you he did not enter into a tabernacle made with hands here on earth but he entered into the heaven itself into
the immediate presence of God and he didn't go into the immediate presence of God with the blood of an animal but by virtue of his own precious blood he became a sacrifice he became a substitute he shed his very own blood and in the value of his very own blood he has entered into the presence of God and listen to what he says here neither by the blood of goats verse 12 or by the blood of kelp but by his own blood he enter in and once notice that not every year he doesn't need to repeat it he enter in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption for us notice the writer says
for us meaning I the writer and you the Hebrew believers of first century and he's really saying to us I the writer and you Jews and Gentiles who believe in Yeshua the Messiah, Yeshua enter into the presence of God and he obtain eternal redemption.
I love this word eternal redemption because you know what, brothers and sisters, it teaches us of the eternal security of the believer. You see, the Hebrews of old, their own forefathers, had to offer again and again sacrifices.
They never knew the assurance of eternal redemption because it does say in chapter 10 of the book of Hebrews for the law having a shadow of good things to come a shadow, it's a picture and not the very image of the thing can never with those sacrifices which they, namely Israel offered year by year continually make the comers there unto perfect they will never have the sense of their conscience free because every time when they left the sacrifice or when they left the altar they look back and they say wait a minute I still have sins again that I need to deal with I got to turn around and offer another sacrifice but the believers
in Yeshua the Messiah once and for all have been delivered from that because the Messiah's sacrifice provided eternal redemption sins have been dealt with once and for all notice it says in verse 13 of Hebrews chapter 9 for if the blood of bulls and if the blood of goats and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean sanctifying to the purifying of only the flesh how much more how much more shall the blood of the Mashiach who through the eternal spirit offered himself without spot to God purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God he says if the ordinary animals such as the goats and the bulls have temporarily cleansed or covered
the Israelis since how much more shall the blood of the Messiah the Mashiach who offered himself through the eternal spirit without spot unto God will purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God and he concludes beloved brothers and sisters in verse 15 when he said for this cause he, this is Yeshua, Jesus Yeshua HaMashiach he became the mediator of a new covenant Brit Chadasha a covenant Brit New Chadasha HaBrit HaChadasha he became now a mediator of this new covenant that by means of death through death for the redemption of the transgression that were under the first covenant, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal redemption.
And so, beloved brothers and sisters, just like this Hebrew writer encouraged the Hebrew believers to recognize that we have eternal redemption, that the Messiah offers himself through the eternal spirit, and that we have an eternal inheritance, Just the same like he is encouraging them, you and I need to be encouraged today to realize that we also, through faith in Yeshua the Mashiach, we have an eternal redemption, an eternal inheritance awaiting us. The question, of course, is have we accepted, all of us in this room, have we all can say truly, And I believe all of us should be able to say it. If not, if there is any one person here that is unsaved, I'm just challenging you today, especially when the theme is Yom HaKippurim.
I'm challenging you today to search your soul, recognize that you have sinned and that the Messiah, Yeshua, paid for your sin when He died for you on the tree. And as we reflect these couple of days, thinking about our families thinking about the people of Israel thinking about the Jewish community worldwide who will go to the synagogue who would cry to God for forgiveness of sins when we reflect of it realize that they don't have a temple that they don't have a priest, that they don't have a sacrifice, that they don't have a blood that had been shed on the altar and therefore they can never have this assurance that the sins have been forgiven they might hope for that they might wish for that but they can never have this assurance as for those that have accepted Yeshua the Messiah work on the tree on our behalf and so let's pray today as we're dealing with this subject of Yom HaKippurim let's pray that our people would come to faith in Yeshua the Messiah.
Let me read just one short song that is sung by many believers today who understand what Yeshua has done for them. Listen to these words. It says here, A mind at perfect peace with God. Oh, what a word is this. a sinner reconciled through blood this indeed is peace, is shalom by nature and by practice far away how very far away I am yet now by grace I was brought nigh to him through faith in Yeshua's blood so nigh so very nigh to God I cannot nearer be for in the person of his son I am as near as he so dear so very dear to God more dear I cannot be the love with he loved his son such is his love to me beautiful hymn, beautiful song it's a song that really represents those that have come to trust Yeshua HaMashiach and it really speaks of you and I how near and how dear we are to him and it's not because of any merit that we have done it is simply because of what Yeshua, Jesus, our Messiah have done for us when he died for us on the cross.
A mind at perfect peace with God. I hope that you and I can say this today as believers in Yeshua, the Messiah. We fail him many times. Sin is so easy to beset us. But brothers and sisters, we always turn back to him. Repent and confess it before him and he will cleanse us and he will forgive us he will take us and he can use us again for his own glory and for his own honor awaiting the day that he will take us to be in heaven never anymore to be separated from him may the Lord bless his word to us all can we say amen to that amen
