well we want to say Shabbat shalom to everyone God bless you and we want to welcome you to the ministry meeting of the holy scriptures in Israel as we are teaching the word of God regularly consistently and this Shabbat meeting we are studying the book of Yonah Hanavi Jonah the prophet and you're welcome to open your bible i hope you have a bible with you we we are going to study and to minister today on the on the second chapter of the book of yonah and that will be part two on the second chapter of the book of yonah the book of jonah the prophet let's ask the lord to bless the meeting let's pray together and then we will read again jonah chapter 2.

Abba our Father bless your word we pray we commit this session to your loving care thank you for Yeshua HaMashiach who loved us and gave himself for us bless your word to us all we pray for we ask it in Jesus in Yeshua's name amen amen so beloved friends and dear brothers and sisters I would like you to turn with me to Jonah chapter 2 but I as our previous meeting we have began the reading from chapter 1 and verse 17 and again the reason that we read from chapter 1 and verse 17 because in the Hebrew Masoretic text the verse 17 of the in the English text is actually verse 1 in the Hebrew Masoretic text and it's been need to be read together with the second chapter.

So I'm reading Jonah 1 verse 17 into Jonah 2 and verse 10. Please follow me. Now the Lord had prepared the great fish to swallow up Jonah and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. Chapter 2 verse 1. Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the vicious belly and said I cried by reason of my affliction unto the Lord and he heard me out of the belly of hell cried I and thou heardest my voice for thou had cast me into the deep in the midst of the seas and the floods come past me about all thy bellows and thy ways passed over me.

When I said I am cast out of thy sight, yet I will look again towards thy holy temple. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul. The depths closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped around my head.

i went down to the bottoms of the mountains the earth with her bars was about me forever yet thou has brought my life from corruption or lord my god verse 7 when my soul fainted within me i remember the lord and my prayer came in unto thee into thine holy temple they that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy but i will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving i will pay that that i have vowed salvation is of the lord and the lord speak unto the fish and it vomited out jonah upon the dry land and i will stop here with this verse beloved brothers and sisters this section today this meeting today

we would call this a part two of the message that deal with the second chapter of the prophecy of the book of jonah jonah the prophet the reason that I wanted to go over this second chapter again is simply because the second chapter of the book of Jonah became a sign we might say the death and resurrection of Yonah Hanavi what happened to Jonah became a picture and a type and a sign that was given to the people of Israel concerning Yeshua Jesus the Messiah and we will look at that in a moment but if you remember in our previous meeting together we went over the very same verses Jonah chapter 2 in fact from

chapter 1 verse 17 into chapter 2 and verse 10 and we looked at these verses and the lesson that we learn was from the experiences that Jonah had in his life to remind us all Jonah was called to go to the city of Nineveh in chapter 1 by the Lord and to preach unto the city of Nineveh Nineveh is the capital city of Assyria and to tell the people of Nineveh what God would tell him concerning the judgment that will come upon the people of Nineveh but Jonah instead of going to the city of Nineveh which was a northeast from his home town instead of going to the city of Nineveh Jonah went down south

to the city of Yaffo and then he he came from Gathefer where his home town in Galilee was beside Natseret went down to the city of Yafo in English they call it Joppa but Yafo in Hebrew and then took a boat and he was ready to begin his journey of about 2500 miles to the city of Tarshish to a place called Tarshish which is in present-day Spain Jonah in disobedience instead of going a northeast he went down south and going into a ship in the mediterranean sea and he began his journey towards Tarshish well God was not happy with Jonah and he had to judge him and so he he created a supernatural storm which

brought about the danger of the ship to be completely broken and sink and so if you remember beloved brothers and sisters we have learned what God did God have caused the mariners to be awakened and to say to pray each one to their own God he didn't help them so the captain went down to where Jonah was he went down to the lowest part of the of the ship and he was sleeping and he said to him why are you sleeping wake up you pray to your god maybe he will deliver us out of this situation and then they asked you now who are you where you coming from who are your people what is

your occupation and Yonah gave them the answer if you remember in chapter 1 and he said to them that he was a hebrew and that he is fleeing from his god from the lord you remember he said in verse 9 of chapter 1 he said unto them i am in hebrew i fear the lord the god of heaven which has made the sea and the and the dry land then were the men exceedingly afraid and said to him why has thou done this why did you flee from your lord from your god and then they said to him you let us know what should we do in order that this storm will cease and jonah

told them you cast me into the sea and the storm will stop And you remember, beloved brothers and sisters, in chapter 1, Jonah, the mariners, the sailors, didn't want to cast him into the sea.

So what did they do? They prayed more. And then they prayed to the God of Jonah. They said, don't bring upon us the judgment because they didn't want to throw him into the sea. But eventually, my dear brothers and sisters and dear friend, they had to do so. And as they cast Yonah, Hanavi, into the sea, the storm stopped. And that's how we arrive to the second chapter of the book of Jonah. By the way, praise God, in spite of the disobedience of Jonah, the mariners, the sailors, end up to worship the God of Jonah.

amazing to see how God worked in their hearts in fact the lesson that we have learned that in spite of our failure God is still using his people to lead others to the true and living God it that doesn't justify our failure and disobedience but nevertheless God is using it for his own glory now we have already covered in our second the part one of the study of the second chapter we have covered the four stages if you remember beloved brothers and sisters the four stages in Jonah's experience with the Lord I want to refresh your mind in that previous meeting of ours the four stages was number one Jonah's disobedience to God number two

Jonah's disciplined by God number three Jonah's dedication back to God in desiring to rededicate his life and to serve God and number four Jonah's deliverance by God and how we divided it in the second chapter verses one and two Jonah's disobedience verses three to six Jonah's disciplined by God which he recognized us after he was cast into the sea number three jonah dedication and rededication to god in verses 7 8 and 9 and finally jonah's deliverance by god in jonah chapter 2 and verse 10 and that's what we have covered in our previous meeting together beloved brothers and sisters and i want in this section today in this meeting to look at the and the

aspect of the lessons that we learn concerning Jonah and the five reasons we would call it this time as we had four stages in Jonah's experience with the Lord now we want to look at the five learning points about Jonah's prayer learning points about Jonah's prayer what happened here what happened actually here in jonah chapter 2 that become a very very important lesson to us concerning that the sign of jonah that is a a the sign of the resurrection of our lord yeshua jesus the messiah so the first thing that we want to learn is in from jonah chapter 1 and verse 17 which is part of Jonah chapter 2 in the Hebrew Masoretic text

of the Bible of the Hebrew scripture from Jonah chapter 1 verse 17 we learn that Jonah was swallowed by the fish that God had prepared God in a supernatural way prepared a fish unique fish that was large enough sufficient enough to swallow up Jonah and to keep Jonah in his belly for three days and three nights and you notice beloved brothers and sisters what we read that Jonah was in a fish's belly for three days and three nights that is 72 hours three days and three nights in other words here we see that God performed a miracle you know some people call it a whale a huge whale that came but the bible the hebrew

scripture doesn't say God prepared a whale or sent a whale he created if you will a fish that would be specifically large enough to go next to the ship where jonah was cast into the sea and to swallow up jonah and to keep him in his belly in its belly for three days and three nights now by the way the word for prepare in the hebrew is the hebrew word yaman yaman means it's like god placed in the sea it is a supernatural miracle that God has created in order to have Yonah placed in the fish's belly by the way many who do not believe in miracles let me remind you that Enoch was taken

to heaven without going through death the miracle that is found in Genesis 5 in verse 24.

Let me remind you that Lot's wife was turned into a pillar of salt according to in Genesis chapter 19 and verse 26. Let me remind you of another miracle that God spoke to Moses from a burning bush that was on fire and was not consumed. according to Exodus chapter 3 and verse 2. God even also, beloved friends and dear brothers and sisters, God has opened the Red Sea and let our people, the Jewish people, walk dry shod in the middle of the Red Sea, according to Exodus chapter 14 and verse 21. In fact, even further, God opened the Jordan river the Yarden and allowed the people of Israel to enter into the promised land crossing dry shod into the promised land according to Joshua chapter 3 and verse 16.

So the first lesson that we learn from Jonah chapter 1 and verse 17 which is part of Jonah chapter 2 in the Hebrew Masoretic text it is the first verse is that God in a miraculous way beloved friends and dear brothers and sisters the creator of the universe the one who is sovereign the one who is the god of all creation have a placed a fish in the sea that the fish is the one that swallowed jonah and jonah was in the fish's belly three days and three nights this is the god who created all things he sent the storm and he created a fish and the fish kept jonah for three days and three

nights now the second lesson that we want to learn here out of these five reasons five lessons for us and five learning points about jonah's prayer is the fact that there are two ways to understand the miracle of jonah in the fish's belly the one way to look at this is jonah was kept alive for three days and three nights in the fish's belly i don't know if you look at the pictures a bible story and i remember as a little boy as i mentioned it earlier in the in jerusalem when there was a picture story we always saw jonah with a candle sitting in a fish's belly and studying his bible and that will

not be a problem god can do so he can have the candles there he can have the light there he can have jonah with the bible there and he can have jonah is alive in in a fish's belly for three days and three nights because he's god he's able to do all things but there's a second way to look at this to understand the miracle of Jonah in the fish's belly which is I believe very very important that Jonah actually died and he rose again after three days and three nights in the fish's belly before verse 10 they tell us that God the Lord spake unto the fish and it vomited Jonah out upon a

dry land and why I think it is very important for us to understand and to take the second point because the lesson that we learned from this second chapter of the book of Jonah that Jonah the prophet became a a sign for the people of Israel for our own people at the sign of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Yeshua HaMashiach in fact if you put your mark here and turn with me to the Gospel of Matthew and if you turn with me to the Gospel of Matthew you will notice beloved brothers and sisters that the Lord Jesus is mentioned and this is very very important and this is really point number three after we

have made a decision in our mind and in our hearts whether jonah was alive three days and three nights in a fish's belly or whether jonah actually died and remained in the fish's belly three days and three nights there are bible teachers who teach both views and both views are acceptable in a sense that god is capable to do all things he's the god of miracles but in this third a a learning point about jonah's prayer in the fish's belly we learn that jonah being a fish's belly for three days and three nights became god's sign to his people of israel of the death burial and resurrection of our lord yeshua jesus the messiah and

so listen to matthew chapter 12 where the lord himself yeshua himself mentioning the name of yonah navi in response to the spiritual leaders of israel who said to him in verse 38 matthew 12 and verse 38 then certain of the scribes and the pharisees answered and said saying, "Master, we would see a sign from thee." Then he answered them in verse 39, "But he," this is Jesus, Yeshua HaMashiach, "He answered, and he said unto them, "An evil and an adulterous generation seeketh after a sign, and there shall no sign be given to it, but," listen, "the sign of Jonah the prophet." He continued and he says to them in verse 44, "As Jonah was three

days and three nights in the fish's belly, so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." He continued, by the way, in verse 41, and he said, "The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation and shall condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, a greater than Jonah is here." In other words, beloved brothers and sisters, while the first point that we want to learn the second chapter the Jonah was actually swallowed by a real fish that God prepared for him and secondly the Jonah the second point the Jonah actually was a picture as a sign it was three

days and three nights in the fish's belly from the Matthew chapter 12 verses 38 to 41 we learn that the lord jesus the lord yeshua the messiah literally took the name of yonah hanavi from the prophet yonah that we are studying together and responding to the challenge of the scribes and the pharisees that says we want a sign and he said to them this generation who did not believe that he was the messiah he said to them this is an adulteress and a generation and even an adult generation seek us after a sign i'm right in your midst of you you should have accepted me i am the mashiach you saw what i have done

but here is another sign that i'm going to give you but that's the only sign that i'm going to give you here in chapter 12 the sign of yonah hanavi and he says if you remember what we just read as jonah was three days and three nights in the fish's belly so shall the son of man by the way the word son of man is a messianic title that is taken from the daniel chapter 7 the word is son of man in hebrew is ben ha adam that is a messianic title you find it throughout the gospel of matthew he was the son of man the son of man the messiah and the messiah must

be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights in other words what yeshua a jesus the messiah is saying to the scribes and to the pharisees that the only sign that he is going to give them who rejected him from being the messiah is the sign of Jonah the prophet and Jonah the prophet was three days and three nights in a fish's belly and the lord Jesus the messiah himself after he was on the cross after he was crucified and he said Elohi Elohi lama shvaktani my god my god why has thou forsaken me and he gave up the spirit and he finished the work of redemption they took him down from

the tree and they placed him in a tomb that no man ever laid there before he died yeshua literally died because it is on the basis of his death and resurrection that you and i can receive forgiveness of sins he died he was buried but he rose again on the third day and here's the sign that he had gave he had given to the generation in the time when he was here on earth before he died as jonah as jonah was three days and three nights in the fish's belly so listen to this so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the fish's belly now notice that he was giving

them the sign of the death and burial and resurrection that Jonah became a sign to our forefathers to the people of Israel in days of old and when a messiah came he fulfilled this by giving himself over by dying on a shameful cross and was buried and rose again on the third day for our justification now turn with me for a moment to the prophet isaiah and in isaiah chapter 53 beloved brothers and sisters we do read prophetically long before the messiah came long before the lord jesus the messiah came into this world long before he was born some 700 750 years isaiah was already predicting what will happen when the messiah will come and

if you remember beloved brothers and sisters we do read in isaiah 53 verse 3 he is despised and rejected of men and men of sorrows and acquainted with grief and we hid as it were our faces from him he was despised and we esteemed him not surely he has borne our grief and carried our soul and we did esteem him stricken in the smitten of god and afflicted but then notice verses five and six he had to die he was wounded for our transgression he was bruised for our iniquities the chastisement of our peace fell upon him and with his stripe we are healed all we like sheep have gone astray we have turned everyone

to his own way and listen to this at the end of verse 6 and the lord laid upon him the iniquities of us all he died he bore in his body our sins on the tree but then if you go down and you notice what it says if you go further down in this chapter it does say beloved brothers and sisters in verse 8 he was taken from prison and from judgment and who shall declare his generation and listen to verse 8b for he was cut out out of the land of the living he was cut off out of the land of the living and why it is for the transgression of my people was

he stricken he was cut off out of the land of the living he died but then listen to this in verse 10 it says yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him he hath put him to grief when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin notice that it says in verse 10 at the end he shall see his seed he shall prolong his days here's the resurrection and notice that and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand Isaiah 53 presenting before us the life the death and the resurrection of the promised Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the world who said as Jonah was in Ephesians barely three days

and three nights so shall the son of man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights he must die be buried and rise again go back to this book of psalms please psalm 16 psalm 16 this time david is in presenting the death and resurrection of the messiah And in Psalm 16 we read concerning the life, the death, the burial, and the resurrection of our Lord Yeshua, Jesus the Messiah.

Notice what we read in Psalm 16 and verse 8. I have set the Lord always before him, before me, because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. that's the messiah's life therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices my flesh listen to verse 9 my flesh also shall rest in hope this is speaking about the death of the messiah then he continued in verse 10 and david depict the resurrection of the messiah where he said Listen to this, thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, in Sheol. Neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. The body will be resurrected. The soul will be coming out of Sheol.

You will not leave my soul in Sheol, in hell. Neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. he was resurrected from among the dead so we are going back to these five five learning points that we want to learn from Jonah chapter two is that we learn number one that Jonah was literally and he was swallowed by a real fish and he was in a fish's belly for three days and three nights. Secondly we have learned that there were two ways to understand that miracle that happened to Jonah in the fish's belly. One way to look at that is that he was kept alive for three days and three nights in the fish's belly and that would be a miracle in itself which God can produce.

It's no problem for the Lord but secondly the second point is that Jonah actually died and rose again after three days and remained in the fish's belly until the fish had vomited him to land we have taken the second while both of them are taught by bible teachers for which we thank the lord and they say that the first point that he was kept alive is an allegory of how the lord was in the heart of the earth just like an allegory but in reality we've learned very quickly that something must have happened to you now that he's actually literally died and his body was remaining in a fish's belly until he was vomited on

a dry land after three days and three nights and the third lesson that we've learned that Yeshua Jesus the Messiah have used the sign of Jonah being three days and three nights as a sign for our people of all the people of israel of the death burial and resurrection of our lord yeshua the messiah himself we read matthew chapter 12 verses 38 to 41 we could read matthew 16 verses 1 to 4 which he makes reference to this as well we could read luke chapter 11 verses 29 and 30 as well making reference to the very same subject of Jonah being an efficient belly for three days and three nights which become a sign for

the people of Israel of the death burial and resurrection of the Messiah of the Savior and we could see that the prophets of Israel in Isaiah 53 and in Psalm 16 clearly taught of the resurrection of the Messiah if he is going to pay for your sins and mine he had to die and if he would not die you and I still have our sins upon us that's why the Mashiach had to die he had to be punished so that you and I will not mean need to be punished because we have sinned all have sinned and come short of the glory of God and if there is any way for a holy God to

forgive a sinner someone had to become a sacrifice a substitute and so God sent the beloved son the Messiah who was born to the Virgin Miriam who lived the perfect life in the land of Israel who died a substitutionary death and And after three days and three nights, he rose for our justification.

You remember what the Apostle Paul said in Romans chapter 4? Let me read you this verse. Romans chapter 4, when our Apostle Paul said to the Roman believers, he said that the last verse of Romans chapter 4 concerning Yeshua HaMashiach, he said, he, this is Jesus, this is Yeshua, he was delivered for our offenses. But he was raised, or and he was raised for our justification. That's why it's so wonderful to know that we have a risen Savior. We don't have a dead Savior, we have a risen Savior.

God was so satisfied with the work of Yeshua, Jesus the Messiah, that he raised him from among the dead and then he took him to heaven as the psalmist said sit thou at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool and we have a redeemer a savior who is right now at God's right hand seated waiting for the day that he will come to take all the redeemed to be with him in glory and so patient to offer the offer of salvation whosoever will let him come because he died he was buried and he rose again for those whom he wished to justify but they must come to him by faith this is

the third point of learning from Jonah chapter 2 but now listen as we are moving now to the actual verses to the actual prayer this is so interesting beloved brothers and sisters in the fourth point of our discussion together at the learning the four point while Jonah and I want you to notice this beloved brothers and sisters while Jonah wrote his prayer after he was vomited out he put it on a record when we have it in the canon of scripture he wrote Jonah wrote his his prayer after he was vomited out of the fish on a dry on a dry ground Jonah's prayer actually took place when Jonah was still in the fish's belly

after his resurrection and before he was vomited out of the belly of the fish And this is very, very important as we are looking now into these verses, beloved brothers and sisters, in that second chapter.

In fact, the second chapter is sandwiched between verse 17, which is verse 1 in the Hebrew text, and verse 10, or which is verse 11 in the Hebrew text. Between Jonah being three days and three nights in Ephesians belly. And then in the next verse, how God has called the fish and the fish vomited Jonah onto the dry ground. Right in between these two verses, you have these nine verses that deal with Jonah's prayer. Let me just repeat it. While Jonah wrote his prayer after he was vomited out to the dry land and recorded this for us, In actuality Jonah's prayer took place when Jonah was still in the fish's belly and it was after he rose from the dead, this is after three days, and before he was vomited out upon the dry land.

That is essential to understand. Now the final point, and then we will go to another few thoughts I would like to share with you beloved brothers and sisters. The fifth learning point that we have in Jonah's prayer is that Jonah actually prayed three distinct prayers which he prayed at three different times during the three days and the three nights.

now you and i when we hear this kind of statement we are very much puzzled what we have here actually three prayers distinct prayers which jonah prayed at three different times during the three days and the three nights well this is exactly what i seek to communicate with your beloved brothers and sisters and if you go back into your bibles notice verses 1 and 2 of jonah chapter 2 where we read notice that verses 1 and 2a of jonah chapter 2 is actually the third prayer out of the three prayers that jonah prayed then jonah prayed unto the lord his god notice it out of the fish's belly in other words he was praying while

he was in the fish's belly and he said listen i cried by reason of my affliction unto the lord and he heard me this is actually the third prayer of jonah and in this third prayer of jonah he recorded for us an additional two prayers which he prayed before earlier so in verses 1 and 2a what we learn here that jonah recorded his third prayer which took place while he was in a fish's belly after his death and resurrection and in this third prayer Jonah gave thanks to the Lord who heard his cry of repentance during his affliction and he raised him from the dead now this is so interesting in my study of this

I was I was overwhelmed as various Bible teachers thought that because again to remind you that there are two views the one view says no no Jonah was kept alive in a miraculous way by the Lord for three days and three nights he didn't die he was just kept in the fish's belly the other school of teaching is no Jonah actually did die and the belly of the fish became the tomb for him while his soul have gone out of him and have gone to hell to Hades And after three days he was resurrected and the soul be restored to the body and he was resurrected and he is giving thanks to God for what

God have done and how God have answered his prayers.

And so notice this, while in verses 1 and 2a Jonah recorded his third prayer while he was in a fish's belly after his death and resurrection, and he confessed and he thanked God for hearing his prayer of repentance during the time that he was in a fish's belly, in verse 2b and go back now to the text in verse 2b Jonah recorded actually his second prayer and his second prayer notice that i'm reading his verse 2 notice he said out of the belly of hell i cried and thou heardest my voice now let me remind you beloved brothers and sisters that in this verse 2b Jonah is saying that he cried well out of the belly of hell.

The word hell is the Hebrew word for Sheol. Sheol is the place of the departed spirits of all the dead.

whoever dies he or she goes to Sheol and so I want you just to notice that the English word for the Hebrew word Sheol is hell and the Greek word is Hades for the same word oftentimes in the in the new testament when you ever read the word hell it is oftentimes used for the Greek word sheol a Hades or the Hebrew word sheol so hell sheol or Hades is the place where all the spirits and souls of those who died went in hell in sheol in hades there is more than one compartment there is the good side for all the redeemed people and there is the bad side for all those who died in

their sins the unredeemed those who are not forgiven unredeemed the new testament distinguish the two sides in hell by calling them notice that how does the new testament it distinguish the two sides calling the one side the good side calling paradise the greek paradisos or in hebrew it's called pardes or gan eden that is found in fact i would like you to turn with me for a moment to luke chapter 23 and verse 43 you remember when our lord yeshua the messiah was on the cross there were two malefactors that were on each side of the lord and in luke chapter 23 and verse 43 we do read beloved brothers and sisters luke chapter 20

23 actually verse 22 and verse 43 um let me just find this verse and i i just want to make sure that i'm i'm giving you the correct verse yes in in i said verse 43 it should be verse 34 and on where we then said jesus father forgive them for they know not what they do and you remember there were those that were two two malefactors on each side in verse 39 one of the malefactors which was hanging railed at him and saying if you be the messiah save yourself and us but the other answer in rebuke him saying does not thou fear god seeing thou thou art in the same condemnation we indeed

justly for we receive the due reward of our deeds but these men have done nothing and means and notice what he says in verse 42 and in verse 43 beloved brothers and sisters of luke chapter 23 we do read listen to these beloved brothers and sisters he said unto jesus lord remember me when thou comest into the king thy kingdom and notice what the lord said to him and the lord said to him jesus said unto him verily i said to you today thou shall be with me in paradise today you will be with me in paradise that name paradise paradisos in the greek the place where the good side of those that were the

redeemed that have gone who died and the other side is a second side and that second side in hades in the in sheol in the place of the dead is the bad side which is simply called still in scripture hell now since you're in the gospel of luke turn with me to luke chapter 16 and in luke chapter 16 we have in a story that the lord jesus the messiah is sharing about the rich man and lazarus and you notice what we read i'm not going to read the whole text it is for verse 19 onward that a certain rich man he he was a wealthy man and then Lazarus was by his doors and

then the rich man couldn't care less couldn't care for anything about anything else he just wanted to carry on his life and he didn't deal with the need that he had for his sins so he lived his life with all the pleasures that he had here in this world, while Eliezer, Lazarus, was a poor man who lived in poverty.

We do read in verse 21, I read verse 22 of Luke chapter 16, it said, "And it came to pass that a beggar died and he was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom." This is another name for paradise, Abraham's bosom. and then we read the rich man also died and he was buried and notice verse 23 in verse 23 of luke 16 we read and in hell he lifted up his eyes being in torment and he sees abraham afar off and lazarus in his bosom and he said to him he cried father abraham have mercy on me and send eliezer lazarus that he may dip the tip of of his finger in water and cool my tongue for i am tormented here.

That's the bad side. Tormentation for those who went to hell, to Hades, without to know their sins forgiven. And yet he's crying to the other side. He's saying, Father Abraham, send Eliezer that he will come to me. I'm tormented here.

And notice what Abraham says to him in the next verses Abraham said son you remember that you in your lifetime receive thy good things and likewise Eliezer evil thing but now he is comforted and thou art tormented and beside notice verse 26 there is a fixed there is a fixed gulf between us so that they which would pass from thence to you cannot neither can they pass to us that would come that would like to come from them in other words there is a two beloved brothers and sisters what the lord jesus the messiah teaching us that the place of the departed of the dead there is a it's called hell hades in the greek

sheol in the hebrew and there are two compartments for the believers is the good side for the unbelievers is the bad side the good side is called paradise and abraham bosom the bad side is simply continued to be called hell in the hebrew text whenever you read the word all if you look at the hebrew text in the old covenant in the tanakh you find the word for grave or the word for pit or the word for hell mentioned for the word sheol but the lesson is simply when a person dies his body goes to the tomb and his soul goes to sheol to hades to hell so what we really learned that no one

could be going to hell unless he or she died and no one can pray from Sheol or speak from Sheol unless they literally died and so what we read here and go back to Jonah chapter 2 and in the verses that we read now in verse 2b Jonah said not that this is really the second prayer of Jonah which he prayed out of shoal out of hades out of hell the place of the departed spirit and soul of the dead notice i'm reading again in verse 2b he heard me out of the belly of hell the hebrew rewarded Sheol I cried and thou heard my voice so what we learn here that the second prayer

of Jonah was after he died and his body remained in the fish's belly and his soul was in Sheol and from Sheol he cried unto the Lord and the lord heard his voice now just to emphasize this go again back to psalm 16 and in psalm 16 we read of the messiah in psalm 16 and verse 10 where this is the prophetic word concerning the resurrection the death and resurrection of the messiah in psalm 16 and verse 10 the messiah speaking of course david speaking about christ about the mashiach in verse 10 for thou will not leave my soul in secondly thou will not suffer thine holy one this is the body to see corruption

That's what death means.

Death means a separation of the body and the soul and the spirit. When a person dies, when we go to a funeral, the person's body is going to be placed in the tomb, in the grave. But his soul has been taken up. And if he was a believer forgiven, he would be in paradise. In Abraham's bosom, if he or she would not be born of the Spirit of God, they would go to hell, to the place of tormentation. And so, now just to conclude that, go back to Jonah, and now I would like to speak about his first prayer. From Jonah chapter 2 and verses 3 to 7, we actually have the first prayer of Jonah.

And that prayer was prayed while he was cast by the mariners into the sea and ultimately swallowed by the fish. So Jonah recorded actually his first prayer when he was in the water in the midst of the sea which led him finally to his death and ultimately into the fish's belly. Listen to this, verses 3 to 7. Verse 3a, Jonah confessed that he was actually, notice that I'm reading that, Jonah confessed that it was actually God who cast him into the deep. For thou hast cast me into the deep in the midst of the seas. Although the mariners cast me, but it's actually God who cast him into the sea.

in verse 3b Jonah described the experience that he had in the water as he was just about to drown we read in verse 3b notice that he said that and the floods come past me about all thy billows and thy ways were over me in other words as as he was cast into the sea and he was kind of slowly but surely beginning beginning to drown he really confessed that it was not only actually the lord that cast him down but it was he describing his experience in the water because he said all thy billows were over me and the waves came upon me you continue notice this in verse a four jonah prayed actually

there his first prayer and he said i am cast out of thy sight yet I will look again towards God's holy temple notice again I'm reading verse 4 when I said notice then I said I'm cast out of thy sight and I will look towards thine holy temple in other words when Jonah was cast into the sea and he's the water the experience that he experienced there in the water and that god was actually the one that have cast him down into the sea then he prayed and he says now i'm going to look into the the holy temple i'm praying god help me and you know you and i might say well how did

he have time to do that you remember when nehemiah was asked by the king why are your face so sad we read a very simple verse it says and i prayed unto the lord and i answered unto the king you know sometimes our prayers do not need to be a minute two minutes three minutes long we can cry to the lord in a time of of of of a terrible experience in our life we just said lord help me or we confess our sin i'm sorry i for i confess my sin lord and it doesn't take too long to make such a prayer and that is what exactly happened when Jonah was cast into the

sea he was turning to the Lord in prayer while he was experiencing these things the waves and the billows over him and eventually he was swallowed by the fish in fact in verse 5 notice it in verse 5 Jonah described his drowning below the surface of the waters which covered him and led him to his death Jonah said and listen to this in verse 5 the waters compass me about notice that he is cast into the water this was his first prayer the prayer that he is praying in the beginning and he describing what happened to him the waters compass me about even to the soul the depths closed me round about the weeds listen

to the weeds were wrapped all around me around my head as he was drowning and so in verse 5 Jonah described how he drowned and his drowning ultimately led him to die and in verse 6a we find the description of Jonah's death and Jonah is saying in verse 6 I went down to the bottom of the mountains the earth with her bars were about me forever." It's a description of death.

And then Jonah speaks of this in verse 6 and now notice this: in verse 6b we see that Jonah describes that God did answer him and ultimately raised him from the dead while the body was still in the fish's belly and the soul returned to the body after the three days and three nights and so we read in verse 6b yet thou has brought my life from corruption oh lord my god this is exactly what we read in psalm 16 and verse 10 concerning our lord yeshua jesus the messiah that david prophetically said thou shall not leave my soul in Sheol neither will thou let thy holy one to seek corruption exactly what happened when our Lord Yeshua the Messiah had been resurrected from among the dead and so beloved brothers and sisters in verse 7 Jonah explained that in Sheol he remembered the Lord and then prayed and then the Lord answered him by raising him from the dead.

And I'm reading verse 7: "When my soul fainted within me, I remember the Lord and my prayer came in unto thee into thine holy mountain." And so it is so interesting beloved brothers and sisters that we see the structure in which we are presented here in Jonah chapter 2 that Jonah literally died.

His body remained in the fish's belly the fish's belly became as a tomb as a grave his soul and spirit went to sheol where the departed where the dead goes and then after three days and three nights he was resurrected while still in the fish's belly before the fish spewed jonah and vomited jonah to the dry land and therefore what we learned from this section is that we have really three prayers the third prayer was prayed while jonah was in the fish's belly after his resurrection the second prayer was prayed when jonah was in a shawl in hell according to chapter 2 and verse 2b and the third prayer was prayed I should say the

first prayer was prayed when Jonah was cast into the sea that's what we learn here from these passages and so now let's conclude with these last verses in verses in verse 7 we just said that Jonah is explaining that he remembered the Lord in Sheol and the Lord answered him and raised him and then in verses 8 and 9 Jonah rededicate himself to the Lord's service to go and to preach God's word to the people of Nineveh and so we read in verse 8 we read in verses 8 and 9 they that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy speaking about the Ninevites but he says I will sacrifice unto thee with with the voice

of thanksgiving I will pay that which I have vowed salvation is of the Lord Jonah making the promise Lord I promise you that I will go and I will do what I have promised and then Jonah is committing himself saying salvation is of the Lord this is so beautiful because in verse 9 the word salvation comes from the Hebrew word Yeshua the very same name of Yeshua of Jesus you shall call his name Jesus Yeshua for he shall save his people from their sin salvation is of the Lord and the lesson beloved brothers and sisters is ultimately that Jonah literally was a sign to the people of Israel as Yeshua the Messiah said in Matthew

chapter 12 where he said in the verses that we read already Matthew chapter 12 and verse 40 as Jonah was three days and three nights in Ephesians belly so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth Jonah did die the tomb for Jonah was the fish's belly.

His soul went to Sheol. In Sheol he prayed his second prayer. God answered him, raised him and kept him until he gave a command to the fish to vomit him into a dry land. and ultimately Jonah became a sign to the people of Israel as the sign of the prophet Jonah.

Now I want to I don't want to conclude before I'm reading one more verse if you turn with me and I'm going to stop now in 2nd Corinthians chapter 5 and verse 8 every believer who dies today is no longer going to what is called paradise or Abraham's booza every believer who dies today after the death and resurrection of our lord jesus the messiah he or she are going immediately to the presence of the lord absent from the body and immediately in the presence of the lord and so we read in second corinthia chapter 5 in verse eight he says we paul says we are confident i say and willing rather to be absent from

the body and present with the lord what really happened is that the lord yeshua jesus the messiah emptied the good part of of shawl and all those who were there all the redeemed that were there were taken out of that good part of Sheol and to be in the presence of the Lord and that's why since the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus the Messiah every true believer when he or she dies while the body is going to the tomb waiting the day of resurrection the spirit and the soul going to be in the presence of the Lord.

What a wonderful lesson we learn from the Word of God and with this, beloved brothers and sisters and dear friends, we concluded with the second part of the study of the second chapter of the book of Jonah. May the Lord bless His Word.
