Shabbat Shalom everyone, God bless you. We are continuing on the study together of the gospel of Yohanan, John. We are in the first chapter. We begin with the introduction to this beautiful gospel that presents before us the person of our Lord Jesus, our Lord Yeshua, the Messiah, as the eternal Son of God, and presenting before us the fact that this person that we have come to trust in Him is none else but God the Son who became a man the messiah of israel and the savior of this world and that this gospel of john was written for one express purpose as we read in john 20 verse 31 these are written that he might believe that yeshua jesus is the messiah the son of god and that believing he might have life through his name.
Well today as we continue on with John 1 and we are going to read the first five verses of the gospel of John. John 1 verses 1 to 5. We read in the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men, and the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not, or the darkness did not take hold of it. And so I'm stopping with the first five verses here in the Gospel of John chapter 1.
Beloved brothers and sisters, as we continue on to enter into this Gospel after the introduction that we have already enjoyed, it is important to notice as we read verse 1, in the beginning was the word. In the beginning was the word. We already have noticed that we have three beginnings in the scriptures. Genesis 1 verse 1, in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth as we read it in Genesis chapter 1 and verse 1.
And then we also took a note as we read first john chapter 1 and verse 1 which says that which was from the beginning that which we have heard that which we have seen with our eyes that which we beheld in our hands and handled concerning the word of life we notice now that this is the third time that we read in the beginning in john chapter 1 so we have genesis chapter 1 verse 1 first john chapter 1 verse 1 and john chapter 1 verse 1 and it is extremely important if we are to understand that expression in the beginning was the word we found out that whoever the word is which we're going
to touch it in a moment that word is logos in the beginning was the logos in the greek and in hebrew the davar or the mimra in the hebrew language and so in the beginning whoever this logos whoever this davar whoever this mimra was he was already there he was the pre-existent person it is important especially for us if we are going to understand the importance of the gospel of john and why it is so important to believe that the lord jesus the lord yeshua is the messiah the christ the christos the mashiach in hebrew and also that he is the son of god or god the son in hebrew ben ha Elohim it is
important to understand and to believe in the tri-unity of the Godhead now this is extremely difficult for many of us of course how can we accept such a thing especially those of us who are Jewish who are coming from our own nation of Israel that we were always taught that there is only one God and that God is the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob from our cradle you might say we have been taught to recite this verse shema israel adonai eloheinu adonai echad here o israel the lord our god is one lord and so we have been taught that there is only one god and that the only one god is the god of
abraham isaac and jacob And when God gave to our forefathers the Torah, the law, he specifically warned us, I am the Lord, thy God, which hath brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the land of bondage.
Exodus chapter 20 and verse 2 verse 3 says, Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee graven images or any kind of anything that is in heaven above or that in the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth. thou shalt not bow down thyself to them nor serve them for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God so the God of our fathers the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob the God of Israel have taught our forefathers and that is including this John Yohanan who gave us the gospel of John who as we have been taught that he was that son of zebedee ben zavdai who was the son of thunder ben raam who was called the shalich the apostle who grew up in the in the galil in the north of israel and became one of the disciples of our lord yeshua the messiah we all have been taught that we only have one God so how can we understand that there is a triunity in the Godhead well this is not easy to understand but it's fundamental for us to understand the gospel of John because the gospel of John does two things before us number one it presenting before us that the Yeshua, Jesus, the Messiah, is God the Son, the Son of God.
And number two, it presents before us the fact that he is one of the persons of the Godhead. So, it is very important for every one of us to understand the triunity of the Godhead. Now, this is important. The first verse of the Bible, of the Word of God, of the Hebrew Scriptures, says, In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now this is fascinating because the Hebrew word for God is Elohim. And every one of us who know Hebrew knows that yudmem, I am at the end of every word, is a plural. It gives a word a plurality. So, when it says in the beginning, God, it is very interesting that the Moshe, Moses, who wrote the Torah, the Pentateuch, the first five books of Moshe, used the word God here for the word Elohim, used the word Elohim, plural.
Yet we know that there is only one God. Why didn't he use the word El, singular, for God? Secondly, it is very interesting. It says in the beginning, God created, but it's very interesting because the word created, bara, is singular rather than plural. So why didn't he use the word Baru, if he used the word Elohim, and why he used the word Barah? Because, beloved friend, because Moshe understood the measure of light that he had in his days, that this Elohim is one God, not three gods, but one God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
very interesting that in exodus chapter 20 where it says thou shall have no other gods before you the same word is elohim and yet the english translation used the word gods plural thou shall not have any other elohim and the word other is plural acherim you see it is very interesting because in genesis 1 and verse 1 using the word elohim but saying but writing created singular bara while in exodus 20 and verse 3 using again the name elohim but when it says have no other gods it is always in plural when it speaks of the false gods of the nations of the world and other in the hebrew is achirim which means others plural
god's plural now moses knew the hebrew language very well but you see beloved brothers and sisters by divine inspiration god expresses himself and reveals himself as the only one and only god the god of abraham isaac and jacob but somehow we learn from both the tanakh and the brich the new covenant that god is existing and consisting in more than one person in the godhead as we enter into the study of the gospel of john yohanan we can see very clearly that the purpose of the writing of this gospel is that all mankind will understand that yeshua from nazareth who died on a roman cross and was buried and rose again is none else but
the eternal god and in additional to that we must learn that this eternal god is existing and consisting in more than one persons in the godhead that is a this is a mouthful for us who are jewish because we have been taught that there is no plurality in the godhead there is only one god and this one god is the god of abraham isaac and jacob and we are not alike other other nations who believe in many many pluralities of gods you notice very interesting that in deuteronomy chapter 6 and verse 4 we have one of these central verses in in the scripture in the word of god central verses for us who are jewish
people who are part of the nation of israel because god said to israel hear o israel shema israel israel listen israel here the lord our god is one lord but here again beloved friends because the text shows us that god was trying to communicate something to israel and to mankind that even though there is only one god one single god of abraham isaac and jacob and israel this one god exists and consists in plurality that's why it says hero israel shema israel the lord our god is one lord adonai eloheinu adonai echad and the word for one is the hebrew word echad the word echad anyone who knows hebrew knows that it is a compound
unity it's not a distinct unit because in hebrew we have two different words for the number one echad and yakid echad is a compound unity yakid is a distinct unit now if the lord wanted to express himself as a distinct unit, singular he would have used the word Yahid but for one reason or another Moshe, Moses the lawgiver the man of God, the one who gave the law to our forefathers, the people of Israel said, hear O Israel, the Lord our God is Echad is one Lord, is a compound unity, why?
because God, Elohim is existing and consisting in more than one person in the Godhead and that is kind of helpful for us to understand that if men will be saved because of all the fact that he deserved to die because of his or her sins another man cannot save men cannot save humanity someone who is sinless had to pay for the price of a sinner someone who is holy harmless undefiled and separate from sinners had to be the one that will pay for the sin of this world because all have sinned and come short of the glory of God so here it is very important beloved friends to understand that the messiah yeshua jesus who
came down to this world to give his life a ransom for many was the one that we understand from scripture that he is one of the persons of the godhead god the son and so again john 20 verse 31 these are reading that ye might believe that yeshua is the messiah the son of god these are written that you might believe that jesus is the christ the son of god in other words if you are going to get saved and you will have life as it said and that believing you might have life through his name it is important for you to understand his divine nature and so really the gospel of john comes to
express before us the fact that god enter humanity in the person of the son and it was god the son one of the three persons of the godhood who entered humanity and was born to the jewish virgin miriam in the city of bethlehem who never knew a man and gave birth to the Mashiach of Israel and the Savior of this world that's why John 1.1 says in the beginning was the word in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth before creation he was already there the eternal son the eternal god now it is very helpful if we will read another verse just to help us along in the study of this passage if
you will just turn to isaiah 48 and verses 15 and 16 and you will notice something extremely interesting that will help us because in isaiah chapter 48 the prophet isaiah is writing something about the future coming of the messiah because in when isaiah wrote israel was just about a few maybe a hundred years later was going to be taken captive by the babylonian so the northern king that was going to be taken by the assyrian so when isaiah wrote in chapter 48 and this is really the word of the messiah jesus himself yeshua himself this is god speaking to israel you notice in verse 12 of Isaiah 48 hearken unto me O Jacob and Israel
my called or called ones I am he I am the first I also am the last then verse 15 I and I have spoken yea I have called him I have brought him and he shall make his way prosperous in other words this god who is speaking here the god of israel who said how can unto me or jacob and israel my called i am he i am the first and i am the last so god is speaking to our forefathers the people of israel before some years before they were taken captive by the Babylonian and he is telling them and giving them an assurance that even though they will be taken away captive eventually
they will be restored as he said at the end of verse 15 he said that he shall make his ways prosperous but then we continue in verse 16 and we read come ye near unto me hear ye this i have not spoken in secret from the beginning from the time that it was there am i and now the lord god knows that a distinct person i am there i'm the one that is the first and the last according to verse 12 and then he continue and he said from that time that it was there am i and now the lord god here is god the father is another person in the godhead and his spirit
is god the holy spirit a third person of the godhead has sent me here is that god the son who became a man by the name of yeshua who was born to the virgin miriam who was sent by the triune god to become the one who will bear the sin of this world this is extremely important to understand beloved friends now another thought just to emphasize this of the fact that the god of israel is one god yet he is existing and consisting in more than one persons in the Godhead we read in Genesis chapter 1 and verse 26 that God desired to have humanity for his own pleasure so what did he do he
wanted to create mankind that's why we read that God have created Adam and then he put him to sleep and he created eve out of his side out of his he took one of his bones and he created eve chava adam vechava but when god thought about it as we read it in scripture and we hear him speaking within the godhead in verse 26 of this chapter genesis 1 verse 26 says and god says let us make men in our image after our likeness and let them have dominion it tells us what dominion men will have over this world again notice three times he used the word here let us make men in hebrew is
very clear who god's speaking to let us make men in our image does he speak to the angels do the human race is created in the image of the angels of course not angels are ministering spirits angels do not have spirit soul and body who does god speak to and god said let us make man in our image after our likeness it is the godhead speaking within the godhead the abba the ben the huach the father the son the spirit as we get the revelation from the new covenant the new testament where the evangelists like the apostle yohanan john or shaul paul or shimon petos and others gives us the information or matthew and mark
and luke and give us information concerning the triunity of the godhead additional information but beloved friend we already learned in the book of genesis of the plurality of the godhead though not as clear as we have it now that we have the complete canon of scripture after our lord yeshua jesus the messiah came down to this world to pay for the price of our sins and notice it says and god says verse 26 of chapter 1 of genesis let us make men in our image and our likeness that it is very interesting because you and i the human race were created in an image and a likeness of god since god is a triunity everything
in this world was created in a triunity form and shape to reveal before us who god is and everything was made for his own pleasure and according to his own will to give us the character of the god who created us for his own pleasure beloved brothers and sisters this is so important to get a hold of and be able to understand that if we are going to enjoy to learn about the gospel of john as we develop the study of the gospel of john beloved brothers and sisters this is very important look what apostle paul wrote to the thessalonians in first thessalonians chapter 5 and verse 23 he said and the very god of
shalom the god of peace sanctify you holy and i pray god your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our lord yeshua ha-mashiach our lord jesus the messiah the spirit and the soul and the body of the human being will be preserved unto the day of the coming of our lord yeshua jesus the messiah you see we have been created in the image and the likeness of god as we read in genesis 1 and verse 26 let us make men in our image after our likeness we have been created in the image and the likeness of god the human race is the only triune creation we might say in
a sense that the animals do not have spirit they have a body and they have a soul the seat of the emotion and feeling but they do not have spirit, as we, the human being, have human spirit in which we can lift up our eyes to heaven and praise God and say, God, Todah, God, thank you.
An animal cannot do so because he is not a triune creation.
A plant, a flower, a tree does not have spirit, neither does a plant have soul, but a plant have a body of a flower of a bush of a tree and a flower a bush or tree cannot lift up its voice and say and say God thank you the plant kingdom has a body the animal kingdom have a body and a soul and the human kingdom have a spirit and a soul and a body because we have been created in the image and the likeness of God as we read in Genesis chapter 1 and verse 26 let us make men in our own image after our own likeness very very interesting you notice by the
way beloved brothers and sisters and dear friend that in the same book of Genesis in chapter 11 a little bit later on when God saw what was happening when men built this tower called Babel the tower of Babel we read in this 11th chapter of the book of Bereshit the book of Genesis we find out that God was so displeased and you notice what it says in verse 6 it says And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language, and this they begin to do, and now nothing will be restrained from them which they have imagined.
Notice verse 7, go to let us, here's again the word, us, go down and there confound their language that they may not understand one another's speech. You see, beloved brothers and sisters, God was not talking to the angels. He was talking within the Godhead of the three persons of the Godhead that God is going to come down and to confound the language of those who build the tower of Babel in Shin'ar and he would be dispersing them all over the earth in which he created for humanity. Now this is very interesting because we saw that very clearly in the Tanakh, in the Hebrew Scriptures, as we read in Genesis 1, 1, Genesis 1, 26, Genesis 11, 6 and 7, Deuteronomy chapter 6 and verse 4.
Hashma Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one, a compound unity, Echad. Not yachid, distinct unit, but Echad, a compound unity. And then we read Isaiah 48 and verses 15 and 16, where the Messiah, who is divine person, said that the Lord God and His Spirit sent Him. God the Father, God the Spirit, sent God the Son to enter into this world as men through the virgin Miriam. Fascinating, as we learn from these passages. Now, just a verse or two, just to move along. Because in Matthew, in the Gospel of Matthew, we have additional information in chapter 3 at the Tevila, at the water baptism of the Messiah who came to the Jordan to be immersed by Yohanan Hamadbil, John the Baptizer.
we read in matthew chapter 3 and verse 13 then cometh yeshua jesus from galilee to jordan unto john to be baptized of him and john forbear him johanan this is johanan the baptizer he said to him i have need to be baptized of thee and cometh down to me yeshua answering said unto him suffer it to be so now for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness he identified with the jewish people who wanted a restoration and repented before the lord and came to yohanan the baptizer to the jordan river and notice what we read in verse 16 and 17 and jesus when he was baptized when he was immersed he went up straightway
out of the water and the heavens were open unto him and he saw the spirit of god listen to that descending like a dove and lighting upon him here is the holy spirit of god descending upon yeshua the messiah who just came out of the water god the son as man and god the holy spirit descended upon him and then we read of in verse 17 and law a voice from heaven saying this is my beloved son in whom i am well pleased notice that the son as man comes out of the water of jordan god the son as man just was immersed by john the baptizer then god the holy spirit descended upon him
in the form of a dove and then god the father's voice came out of heaven he said this is my beloved son in whom i am well pleased three persons of the godhead involved in a proclamation of the person of the lord yeshua jesus the messiah who just identify with his people the jewish people who came to confess their sins to be immersed unto repentance this is fascinating when you really think about this beloved friend as it is important in the study of the gospel of john because it helps us to appreciate the divine nature of the messiah who was one of the persons of the godhead one god not three gods one god the
god of abraham isaac and jacob the god of israel not three gods only one but existing and consisting in three persons hard to fathom yet the tanakh and the The Hebrew Scriptures and the New Covenant clearly present this before us.
In the end of the Gospel of Matthew, after Yeshua the Messiah died on a Roman cross and was buried and rose again before He was ascended and He went back to glory as a man. He gave the great commission to the early disciples in the Galil. And you remember what He said to them?
In Matthew chapter 28, in verse 18 and 19 Yeshua came and spake unto them saying all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth go ye therefore and teach all nations baptizing them immersing them in the name of the Abba father and of the son Ben and of the Holy Spirit notice that go ye therefore and teach all nations they were going to go from Israel and to go to all over the world to teach that message of the gospel of the grace of God to all nations that God in love for man came down in the person of the son Yeshua the Messiah and went to all the way to pay for
the price of the sin of this world and that whosoever believeth on him shall not perish but have everlasting life this is unbelievable of the love of God but then when you immerse them litbol otam in Hebrew the word litbol to be baptized in Greek baptizo in Hebrew litbol means to put under to put into baptizing them immersing them litvol otam in the name notice of the father and of the son of the holy spirit now notice it is so interesting that john and others as well then matthew in this case they understand that there is not three gods but there is only one god that's why when matthew wrote baptizing them in the name
singular not in the names but in the name Beshem singular of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit why?
because there is only one God the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob, there is only one God the God of Israel but this one God the Creator God is existing and consisting in more than one person in the Godhead we do not believe in three gods we believe in one God Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad but what we understand from the word of God that in the Godhead there are more than one persons there is more than one person in the Godhead but we have a triune God abba ben ruach father son spirit in second corinthians chapter 13 the apostle paul closed the whole letter by the benediction saying a triune benediction you might say, saying the grace of the Lord Jesus the Messiah, that's God the Son, as man, and the love of God, that's God the Father, and the communion of the Spirit, that God the Holy Spirit be with you all, amen.
Shaul Paul closed his letter to the Corinthians who needed so much instruction, wishing to them the blessing and the grace that come from god the grace and the love and the fellowship of all the three persons of the godhead the father the son the spirit abba ben ruach one god and three persons and so therefore beloved brothers and sisters as we are moving along into john chapter 1 and verse 1 when john is giving us this information in the beginning was the word now this is also extremely interesting because now that we are in john 1 and verse 1 where we read in the beginning was the word then we ask the question what do you mean john what do you mean when you say in the beginning was the word in the greek of course in the beginning was the logos the logos was the way whereby the the greek philosophers understood that personal power source that was invisible.
They didn't quite get what the Jewish people understood because of the Scripture. So the philosopher or the Greek philosophers understood that there is a personal force somewhere and that this invisible become now visible. So John used the word logos and the word logos is translated when you read it in hebrew it simply come to the word davar or mimra or leemor to say in other words what we really learn here beloved brothers and sisters in the beginning was the word that whatever beginning you put here before the incarnation 2 000 years before the creation of the heavens and the earth which was happening sometime around 6 000 years or so this gospel of john john 1 verse 1 takes us to a million and trillions and whatever number you want to put there this word this logos this word this mimrah was already there in fact what it tells us that he was eternal he was eternal in the beginning the eternal word was already there and he is a person it's very interesting that in first kings chapter 8 we have a verse that is rather interesting that King Shlomo, King Solomon asked this question when he was building the temple in the city of Jerusalem.
In 1st King chapter 8 and verse 27, King Shlomo, King Solomon said, but will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold the heaven, and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee, how much less this house that I have built. Will God indeed dwell on the earth? Will the eternal God ever be dwelling upon this earth? Well, this is exactly what we're going to learn from the Gospel of John, that in the beginning was the eternal word, the Logos, the Mimra, and that this Mimra was a person that is soon, according to John 1, he was entering into this world to become, you might say, to take union humanity with his divine nature.
the word mimra or the word thus sayeth the lord is mentioned sometime over 400 times in the hebrew tanakh in the hebrew scripture and it's mentioned again and again the word mimra ko amar adonai in hebrew is mentioned again and again in the hebrew text to show us that god spoke and whenever god speak his words is not only that is he created all things by the word of his power but whenever he spoke he always was speaking in the person of the one of whom we are going to learn namely the person of our lord yeshua jesus the messiah it is very interesting we have a verse in exodus chapter 4 and verse 22
where we read god said to moses and thou shalt say unto pharaoh notice that thus saith the lord ko amar adonai you notice the word amar the word say the word mimra the word davar god spoke whenever god has spoken in eternity from the time that he created man whenever he had spoken he's spoken in the person of his son and that's exodus chapter 4 22 and 5 1 and so on we find again and again the word ko amar adonai thus says the the lord and that word for logos for god spoke one the one that spokes for god is none else but our lord yeshua jesus the messiah so the word davar or
mimra is that which is represented here with the greek word for logos god spoke and he spoke in the person of the son the messiah the person of the godhead god the son so while in verse one we see first of all in the beginning was the word that he was eternal he was already there and then secondly we find out in verse 1b that the word was with God beloved friend it is extremely interesting in the beginning was the word in the beginning was the logos in the beginning was the word of God the mimra it's a person and now this mimra this logos was with god so this person that is called logos
in the greek mimra or davar in the hebrew is a distinct person from god so what we really have in verse 1a and verse 1b the fact that that person which is called Logos or Mimra who was there in eternity past who is eternal he is also a distinct person from God and of course we know that he is a distinct person from God the Father and God the Son in light of the passages that we have already read in Genesis chapter 1 and verse 26 and 11 verses 6 and 7 and Deuteronomy chapter 6 and verse 4.
He is a distinct person. In the beginning was the Word. He is eternal. And the Word was with God. He is distinct from God. He is a distinct person from God the Father. He is a distinct person from God the spirit because he is god the son the eternal son of god but then notice thirdly in the very same verse verse one the third portion of this verse helps us to understand that he was not only eternal and that this word this mimra this logos was not only eternal not only distinct person from god but it continues and it tells us and the word was god this is very interesting the same one that was eternal verse 1a and the same one that was distinctive from god verse 1b this is the one that is also god and the word and the logos and the mimra and the davar was divine he was god you see beloved friend this is exactly the reason why the Apostle Yohanan John gives us this gospel supplementing to the Matthew, Mark and Luke gospel.
It's giving us this gospel that presents the Messiah, Yeshua, Jesus, as a divine person. In the beginning was the Word, He is eternal. And the Word was with God, He is distinct from God.
And the Word was God, He is a divine person it is so beautiful to understand these beloved brothers and sisters now if you may please just to elaborate a little bit about it notice that in the book of proverbs in hebrew we call the book of proverbs mishle it was a proverbs that king shlomo the king of solomon the king of israel wrote this book of proverbs and he spoke he wrote about wisdom and in proverb chapter 8 he's speaking about wisdom personified in other words he's applying wisdom which you and i usually look at wisdom as one person might be wise and have wisdom but here in proverbs chapter 8 king shlomo present before
us wisdom personified really he is speaking about the eternal son of god who was existing long before creation came to be and so in proverbs chapter 8 and verse 22 we read the lord possessed me in the beginning of his ways before his works of old i was set up from everlasting from the beginning or ever the earth was when there was no depth i was brought forth when there were no fountains abounding with water, before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth, while as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest parts of the dust of the world, when he prepared the heavens, I was
there, when he set a compass upon the face of the depth when he established the clouds above when he strengthened the fountains of the deep when he gave to the sea his decree that the water should not pass his commandment when he appointed the foundation of the earth we read here in verse 29 then i was by him as one brought up with him, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him.
Look at this beautiful wisdom personified. I was by him, as one brought up with him.
I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him and notice he continued in verse 31 of proverbs chapter 8 rejoicing in the habitable part of the earth and my delights were with the sons of men you notice ladies and gentlemen it said in hebrew at bnei adam i delighted so much with the sons of men and i and you can see what we learn from here that the pre-incarnate mashiach of israel and savior of the world had a delight in the sons of men that's why we read in genesis 126 where the god had said let us make men in our own image after our own likeness because my delight were with the sons of
men in hebrew is beautiful in other words delight is i would love to as if it were to play with them and enjoy them and have fellowship with them but sadly men fell into sin all have sinned and come short of the glory of god which made it necessary for god to say i love men for god so loved the world he loved the world beloved friend so much that he gave his one and only son the mashiach god the son was given for us to redeem us back to god we who have gone away from him sin have crept into the world when adam and eve disobeyed god in the garden of eden and
plunge the whole human race into sin and therefore you and I are sinners who need to be saved and that's why the Messiah was born and the Messiah came to this world so he will die and that's why we read but these are reading that ye might believe that Yeshua is the Messiah, the Son of God and that believing ye might have life through his name you shall call his name yeshua translated into the greek yesus brought into the english jesus but yeshua means jehovah the savior god who became a man to save and to seek and to save them which were lost and he surely came in the beginning was the word he is
eternal and the word was with god he's a distinct person from god the father and god the holy spirit and the word was god his divine nature he is god the son beautiful beloved a friend as we read these texts together and read it and you notice to believe that he is god you remember what isaiah said to us through promising to the people of Israel that when the Messiah is going to enter into this world he will be more than just another man.
I show you a sign, the Lord said. Hear ye now, O house of David, Isaiah 7 verse 13. Is it a small thing for you to weary men? But will ye weary my God also? We read, therefore, in verse 14, The Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold, the Alma, the virgin, shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Imanuel, God with us. Clearly in the Hebrew text. Very, very important for us to understand it. Isaiah continued to give Israel the hope of the coming of the Messiah. For unto us a child is born. This is Bethlehem, the birth of the Messiah. Unto us a son is given.
This is the one, the eternal God, the Son, who was always there in eternity past. And he's going to come. And when he's going to come the first time, he will suffer and die for the sin of the world. But when he's going to come at the second coming, The government shall be upon his shoulder. Verse 6 of Isaiah 9. And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor. The Mighty God, El Gibor. The Everlasting Father or the Father of Eternity. He is the source of eternity. And the Prince of Peace, Sar Shalom. And then he continued in verse 7. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end.
And upon the throne of David, now as a man that's going to come to this earth at his second coming, after he came once to die and he will come again to reign, upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth and forever, God said, the zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. It is found in Isaiah 9 verses 6 and 7. very clear he was eternal he was distinct from god the father and god the spirit and he was divine he was god this is the eternal word the eternal logos the eternal davar the eternal mimrah when god speak he always spoke in the person of the son that's why the logos is that which the philosophers the greek philosophers understood as they were using the greek to provide the gospel message to all the people of the world and in the greek the word Logos simply means a non-personal force, a non-personal power source.
You might say the invisible one became visible. And whenever God spoke, He was speaking in the person of the Son. Now if you just jump with me for a moment to verse 14. This is the fourth time, beloved friends, that the word Logos or Word or Mimra in Hebrew is mentioned in the Gospel of John. Three times in verse 1 and one time in verse 14. John 1.14, and the Logos, and the Word, and the Mimra became flesh and dwelt among us. And we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. The beautiful lesson that we learn here that this eternal God, this distinct person from God the Father and God the Spirit, this God the Son became a man.
And the Word was made, or the Word became correctly flesh and dwelt among us, And we beheld His glory. And so, beloved brothers and sisters, in verse 1 of John chapter 1, we learn that in the beginning, not the beginning of the incarnation here, not the beginning of creation here, but in the beginning of all beginnings, whatever number of years you want to put here, in eternity past, He, the Logos, the one that spoke, he was there. Fascinating. It is important for us to take note of it because Scripture teaches us that God is eternal. In Psalm 90, we read in verse 1 and 2, a prayer of Moshe, the man of God.
Lord, Moses has said, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations, before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hast formed the earth and the world. Listen to this, from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. From everlasting to everlasting, thou art God, and that eternal God the Son, as we read in John 1.14, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. now who can fathom that who can grasp this truth that God the son became a man the divine enter humanity this is very very important to grasp and it's hard for the human race to understand it is only possible as the Holy Spirit of God opened this truth unto us there is a verse that's found in Hebrews the New Testament chapter 1 and verse 1 says God who at sundry time and in diverse manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets has in these last days spoken unto us by his son son wise God spoke to us when he sent God the Son to enter humanity to become a man.
This is fascinating. Beloved brothers and sisters, beloved friends, notice what it says in verse 8 of Hebrews chapter 1, but unto the Son, he says, thy throne, O God, is forever and ever.
A scepter of righteousness is a scepter of thy kingdom thou has loved righteousness and hated iniquity therefore god even thy god is anointed with with the oil of gladness above thy fellows he's quoting psalm 45 verses 6 7 and 8 but notice we read unto the son this god the son he says thy throne oh god is forever and ever this is so beautiful to grasp that the one that came to this world who was there in the beginning was the word he was eternal he was distinct from god the father and god the spirit and he was a divine person god the son beautiful to see beloved brothers and sisters just one more verse
about the eternal god the son we read in first john chapter 5 and verse 20 and we know that the son of god is come and that he has given us an understanding that we may know him that is true and we are in him that is true even in his son jesus christ yeshua ha-mashiach this is the true god and eternal life often i had in early days before i came to know yeshua the messiah as my lord mashiach and savior i had so much trouble to grasp the fact that here we have yeshua jesus is more than just another man he was eternal he was distinct from God the Father and God the
Spirit and he was God God the Son three persons in the God head yet one God not three God but one God and so in verses 1 and now verse 2 of John chapter 1 we find out that he was eternal he is the eternal word he is the logos and then we find out also in verse 2 and the same was in the beginning with God.
It seems to be that the Apostle John wanted to emphasize the fact that he was in the beginning. He was with God. Notice twice he used the word in the beginning. In the beginning was the word, verse 1 says that, and then verse 2, the same was in the beginning with God.
This is wonderful to realize why we must understand not only the triunity of the Godhead one God three persons but also the divine nature of our Lord Yeshua Jesus the Messiah because if he was not divine he could never pay for the price of the sin of this world and so we enjoyed these first two verses but it was essential to understand in verses 1 and 2 the eternal existence of the word the logos the mimra which is none else but our lord jesus our lord yeshua the messiah in the beginning was the word and the word was with god and the word was god the same was in the beginning with god well may
the lord help us as we continue to study this a wonderful book of the gospel of john the gospel of yohanan who present the divine nature of the person of yeshua jesus our lord and our messiah well god bless you my dear friend and may the lord encourage our hearts to be thankful that we have a savior we have a messiah we have the person that saved us who is more than just another man but he is god the son may the lord bless you may the lord bless his word and we say for now shalom shalom god bless you
