Shabbat Shalom. We are going to continue, by the grace of God, this ministry meeting to deal with the epistle of 2 Peter. So will you please turn to 2 Peter chapter 2 for this ministry today, and I would like to read the first nine verses of this chapter. It is very interesting that Shimon Petos have given us a long portion in his writing to the Hebrew believers of first century in which he was dealing with false teachers which will arise already in the earlier part of the church age. This whole chapter deals with false teaching, false teachers, and how important it is for believers in Yeshua the Messiah to recognize that and to have discernment concerning the teaching of the word of God and so we read in second Peter chapter 2 verse 1 to 9 but there were false prophets also among the people even as there shall be false teachers among you who Who privately shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
And many shall follow their pernicious ways, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feign words make merchandise of you, whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness to be reserved unto judgment, and spared not the old world, but saved Noah, the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly, and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly, and delivered just lot, vaxxed with the filthy conversation of the wicked, for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing vaxxed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds, the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished.
I'm going to stop here with verse 9 and just present today for all of us, by the grace of God, what the apostle Peter, Shimon Petros, sought to communicate to those believers. Now, I want you to notice at the beginning of this chapter, he used the word but. You notice that it says right away in verse 1, but. Now, that word but really connects us with the previous chapter. In fact, when Shimon, Peter, wrote this letter, those divisions were not there. So what we really see is that that word but connecting us with the previous chapter. And what did he say in the previous chapter? You remember the climax of the previous verses of chapter 1 was that he mentioned here in verse 19, 20, and 21, where it says, but we have also a more sure word of prophecy.
Whereunto ye do well that ye take heed as unto a light that shineth in a dark place until the day dawn and the day star arise in your hearts.
He's saying here in 2 Peter chapter 1 and verse 19 that even though we have seen this glory of the Messiah in the future where he is going to appear as the king of kings and lord of lords in the time of the feast of tabernacle even though we have seen this glorious sight on the mountain but he says we have more sure word of prophecy it is far more established fact that a word of god will come to pass and he's saying to those brothers and sisters to whom he wrote that we have also a more sure word of prophecy it is solid what had been prophesied in the word of God and so
he's encouraging them to see that the word of God will surely come to pass and they are to follow the scripture and the instruction that they have in the word of God and then they said to them knowing this first that no prophecy of scripture is of any private interpretation for the prophecy came not in all time by the will of men but holy men of god spake as they were moved by the spirit of god in other words he's really saying what we have in this canon of scripture and he's now talking about the tanakh the old testament and the brit hachadashah the new testament what we have in the written word of god
is a sure word of prophecy we can trust it we can follow it we can believe it because it's surely going to come to pass but that's where chapter 2 comes in then verses 1 2 and 3 shimon petos now describe to those hebrew believers to whom he was writing in about 66 a.d and he's writing today he says but brothers and sisters look what's going to happen notice this verse 1a just the same as there were false prophets among the people even as there shall be false teachers among you he's telling them brothers and sisters and you remember it is important to understand that he was writing to jewish believers to yehudim because they
are the one that were part of the people of israel and so he said to them there were false prophets also among their people in the history of our own nation israel there were godly and true prophets that were raised by god but there were also false prophets They were raised, if you will, by the enemy.
And those false prophets have led our nation, Israel, astray, away from Jehovah, away from the God of our fathers. And he is saying to them just the same. Like there were false prophets in the history of Israel. And this is now looking to the future. There shall also be false teachers among you, first century Hebrew Christians who became believers in the Messiah, there will be false teachers who will arise among you. Now, for a moment, I would like you to see what God said to some of the prophets of Israel about the false prophets that rose in the midst of our nation of all. Now turn to the prophet Jeremiah, in Hebrew his name is Yirmiyahu, in chapter 14, we read in verses 14 and 15, it says, then the Lord said unto me, he is speaking to Yirmiyahu, to Jeremiah, the prophets prophesy lies in my name.
I send them not, neither have I commended them, neither speak unto them. They prophesied unto you a false vision, and divination, and a thing of naught, and a deceit of their hearts. Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I send them not. Yet they say, sword and famine shall not be in this land. By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed. you see what these false prophets said to our people israel of all they said listen israel everything is going to be fine not to worry israel there will be no sword no famine israel no problem there will be shalom israel everything is going to be fine but actually they prophesied false prophecy they were speaking to our nation of all that which was not given by god at all Now, if you just turn in Jeremiah chapter 6, look what they were saying to our people Israel of old.
In verse 13, it says, From the least of them unto the greatest of them, everyone is given to covetousness. And from the prophet, even unto the priest, everyone deals falsely. Look what they say in verse 14.
they have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly saying shalom, shalom, peace when there is no shalom, when there is no peace you see what a false prophet does he's saying everything is fine you carry on your own way everything is going to be okay peace, peace, but there is no peace and they were really leading our nation Israel of old in the wrong direction and god is saying to them in this 14th chapter he said they say that everything is going to be fine but i am going to destroy them i will consume them in the very sword and in a very famine in the way that they have preached
to the people of israel false teaching therefore i'm going to deal with them in the very same way so peter who knew his hebrew scriptures who is writing to first century hebrew believers who knew the hebrew scriptures and he's saying to them just the same as there were false prophets also among the people of israel even as there shall be false teachers among you brethren in other words he understood now from seeing how things will develop that there will be false teachers now it is interesting why didn't he say false prophets why didn't he say just as there were false prophets among Israel there will be false prophets among you but he used the word
teachers there is a reason for that if you will read carefully in Ephesians chapter 2 and verse 20 you will notice that the church the assembly was founded upon the apostles and prophets.
Ephesians chapter 2 and verse 20 it says ye are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Yeshua the Messiah himself being the chief cornerstone. In other words when the church was born the apostles and the prophets of the first century church were really the foundation of the assembly the church the ecclesia of course yeshua the messiah is the chief corner stone but when the church grew up the apostles have departed we don't have any more apostles we neither have any more prophets of first century somebody who claimed today to be a prophet he is really a suspect he can tell you oh i don't know what's the future is going to happen someone who claimed to be a prophet today one have to really carefully evaluate what one is saying but the teachers are still remaining in our midst today and the gifts of teaching and evangelization and pastoral care is still remaining today with us until this day and therefore because the apostles and the prophets been removed from here they were the foundation the teachers are here the shepherds are here the evangelists are here and many other gifts that God had given to us today and therefore he says there will be false teachers among you just the same as there were false prophets among the people of Israel.
I don't have to tell you that today we listen to so many voices through the television, the radio, the Internet. We can listen to all sorts of messages on the Internet, and so there are many books that have been written. And we must be very careful, not to condemn merely people, But just to be careful about what we listen, to whom we listen, and whether what is being told us today is really square with the written word of God. And you know, Paul was just the same like Shimon here. Shaul Paul was just as much concerned about the fact that there will be those who will rise from among the people of God who will teach false teaching.
He, before he left the Ephesians' elders, he was crying, he was weeping with them. He said to them in Acts chapter 20, in verse 28, Take heed, therefore unto yourself, and to all the flock over which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to feed the assembly of God, the church of God, which he has purchased with his own blood. For I know that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also, of your own selves shall men arise speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after them. Now you notice that he is not talking only about some wolf that will come in only.
Yeah, they have come in. But also, he says, from among your own selves, Paul mentioned, of your very own people that have crept in and sought to lead disciples after them, not sparing the flock. Paul knew that, and Peter knew that very much the same. And this is the warning that he is giving to believers in Yeshua, the Messiah. Paul spoke to the Gentile Christians, and Peter wrote to Jewish Christians. But we teach the Word of God from its first century messianic perspective. And therefore, we can see that while they were concerned about the early believers, it's applied to us today already after 2,000 years of the church age.
Now, I want to elaborate a little bit about this because this is very, very important. I want you for a moment to bear with me. If you turn to the Gospel of Matthew chapter 7, If we are not going to get hold of it, we will be in danger of following every teacher and its influence and what he teaches, and we have to be very careful. Yeshua said when he was yet alive and ministering to the people of Israel before he died, he said in Matthew chapter 7 and verse 13 and 14, Enter ye at the straight gate, for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth unto destruction, and many there be which go in it.
Because straight is the gate, and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and a few there be that find it. Yeshua gave this instruction to those early individuals, to the disciples to whom he was speaking and the multitude that follow after him. He says, listen, there is a wide way and there is a narrow way. There is a broad way and there is a narrow way. The broad way lead to destruction. The narrow way lead to life. In other words, why was he saying that? Because he knew that there will be those who will teach, well, there are many ways to go to heaven.
there is a broad way you tell me that you believers in yeshua you christian you messiah followers you tell me that there is only one way oh there are many ways and yeshua says no there is only one way i am the way the truth and the life no one come to the father but by me that's why it is so important to establish ourselves on the foundation there is no many way the wide way yes lead to destruction but the narrow way and the only way lead to life you know later on in the life of Yeshua when he was speaking about the future when the tribulation period will come he said to them
also in Matthew chapter 24 he said the very same thing in verse 11 many false prophets shall rise and shall deceive many and because iniquity shall abound the love of many will wax cold in other words he says listen even in the future in the tribulation in Sarat Yaakov in the period of time after the church will be taken out of here and there will be these seven years of tribulation time there will be those that will rise even in that time and they will teach all sort of things and as it says here they will rise and they will deceive many many will be deceived and then he said because iniquity shall abound there
will be more sin and evil here in this world the love of many will grow cold instead of the affection towards the lord it will be growing colder and colder why because the false teachers will teach the false prophets will speak all sort of things and people will follow after these kind of teachers and they're going to end up to lead those followers in a wrong direction so these many many things that the apostle is warning whether it is shimon petros or whether shaul paul yeshua the messiah and many jeremiah was speaking to israel about the false prophets this is something that many of the prophets of israel and the earlier teachers of the Bible
that warned the people of God to be very, very careful.
We have a whole chapter here devoted to this truth that there will be false teachers will arise in the coming day. So, verse 1a, there shall be false teachers among you just the same as there were false prophets among the people of Israel. Now, notice in verse 1b, what these false teachers will do. It says here, who will privately shall bring in damnable heresies. And then look at it. It says, even denying the Lord that bought them. This is also an important portion of verse 1. This word here for heresies is coming really from the Greek word heresis, which comes from the word sect or party.
To be a heretic person or heresy is a sect, a certain sect with its teaching, its influence. Today, I don't have to tell you that we have all sorts of sects in the professing Christian group community. They call themselves Christians, but actually they deny certain truths that the Bible teaches. You see, they give you a little bit of Jesus and a lot of that which is not right and not really squares with the word of God. We have this word found in Acts chapter 5 and verse 17, the sect of the Sadducees. The same word is found in Acts chapter 15, in verse 5, the sect of the Pharisees.
in fact in act chapter 24 and verse 5 even the believers were called the sect of the nazarenes so what we really see that that was sect it is like a school of teaching a party to be distinguished from one to another in these verses in the book of acts it applied to the sadducees pharisees nazarenes but here this word speaking about these false teachers they became the teaching what it says here damnable heresies a sectarian teaching that lead a person into damnation into judgment lead a person into that which will ultimately will judge him and damn him will end up to be eternally separated from god teaching that are wrong and unbiblical you see
not all teachers teach falsely because they intend to teach it you know those of us who teach the word of god we are limited the lord give us by his grace the amount of information that we have and we are limited in our knowledge but we don't intentively purposely teach false doctrine but here we see those false teachers that that is a sectarian way of teaching in which it calls here they bring in damnable heresies and one of the heresies beloved brothers and sisters even as it says here in verse 1b denying the Lord that bought them now this is interesting notice denying the Lord number one and number two denying the Lord that bought
them two things we have here first of all they denied the Lord and that is the person of the Lord Yeshua the Messiah his divine nature his humanity his perfection his pure life that's the person of the messiah that he's got the son who became a man in bethlehem through the virgin birth of miriam where he was born into this world sinless undefiled suffered from sinners they denied the person of the lord they deny that he is one of the triunity of the godhead they deny his divine nature they deny that he is god the son but they also deny his person in his humanity and to us a son is given a child is
born yeshayahu said that to the people of israel that he enter into this world through the virgin birth of miriam sin apart so by denying his divine nature denying his humanity some say well he is the messiah but he is not god others says well he is god but he could sin you see he's a sinner you see he was born into this world through miriam but he could sin so denying the person of the mashiach this is a violation of the word of god what would we do if yeshua would have been merely a man that is a sinner could he save any one of us we could never be saved a sinner cannot
save a sinner and whether he was a good man and a nice prophet and a good jewish man good rabbi he could not help us unless he had a divine nature in him and therefore it is so important to recognize the person of the messiah that he is god the bible tells us in john 1 1 it says in the beginning was the word and the word was with god and the word was god he's god and then verse 14 and the word became flesh and dwell among us and we beheld his glory the glories of the only begotten of the father full of grace and truth we read it in chapter 1 verse 1
2 and verse 14 this is our messiah but they deny the person of the lord as it says here they denying their lord but listen to the second thing not only that they teach the denial of the person of the lord but shimon petro says denying the lord that bought them now they are denying his atoning work for us when he died for us on the tree on the cross they deny his sacrificial atoning death on the cross in other words they deny his finished work you remember John chapter 19 when Yeshua was in a tree he says it is finished he totally finished the work of redemption there is nothing that one needs to
do anymore he fulfilled God's requirement and so those false teachers they deny his person but they also deny his work and beloved brothers and sisters when one denied the person of our Lord Yeshua and the work that he had accomplished he or she have nothing to stand upon what they really do is they only allow God now to tell them to present before him the fact that there is no other way for you to ever receive forgiveness of sins by rejecting the only one that i have sent to this world that's why in the previous chapter when shimon petros mentioned what he saw on the mount he didn't mention only what he saw he also
mentioned what he heard and he said we heard came a voice to him from the excellent glory saying this is my beloved son in whom i am well pleased in hebrew ze bni yedidi ratstan fshi bo this is my beloved son in whom as it said i'm well pleased listen to him he is the one that i am acknowledging and i'm recognizing and i want you to follow after so here's the false teachers and this is something brothers and sisters that you and i have to be extremely careful when we listen to somebody who teach the word of god to listen very carefully what think they of the messiah yeshua what did they teach us
about the person and what do they teach us about the work that he had accomplished for us now some people use that word that bought them to say you see he already bought them they were already purchased by the lord yeshua the messiah because we read in scripture first corinthians chapter 6 you have been bought with a price we read in first peter chapter 1 in verse 18 you were not redeemed with corruptible things of silver and gold from your vain conversation received by tradition from your father but with the precious blood of the messiahs of a lamb and without blemish in other words it says here that they have been bought already well but
the point is beloved brothers and sisters that is very important to understand that what yeshua have accomplished for us on the tree by shedding his precious precious blood his work is sufficient enough to save any human being that ever enter here into this world beginning from adam in genesis chapter 2 and 3 all the way to the last person who's going to live here at the end of the kingdom age who will need a savior but not all are going to appropriate the blood of christ for themselves only those who will believe in yeshua the messiah will take the value of the precious blood and apply it to themselves in other words the work of
yeshua the messiah is sufficient to save any sinner in this world but not all sinners will avail themselves of the work of yeshua the messiah a verse that need to be read a verse or two let me just read these verses are very important in the epistle of john if you turn to first john chapter 2 john is now writing he says listen in verses one and two my little children these things write i unto you that you see not if any man sin we have an advocate with the father yeshua the messiah the righteous and he is the propitiation for our sins and not for our sins only but also for the sins of
the whole world Yohanan John says the value of the work of Yeshua the Messiah is sufficient for all the world but not all the world will avail themselves of the work of the Messiah you notice the word he is the propitiation for our sins in 1st John 2 the word for propitiation it's a hard word but it's used in scripture to teach the fact that God had been satisfied.
In other words, his work propitiated God, satisfied God with respect of sin. So now the value of the work of Yeshua the Messiah satisfied God with respect to all the world and the need of all the world. But one must believe in order to come under the value of the shed blood of Yeshua the Messiah. One more verse, please bear with me. Romans chapter 3. And I tell you why I'm saying this, because a few days ago, a person spoke with me about this and said, you know what? After all, it says that Jesus died for all the world. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth on him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.
But using that word, like that he died for the whole world. So therefore, everybody can get saved, and everybody is saved anyway. Why believe in Yeshua? His blood was sufficient for everyone. We all have to be saved. Well, while it is true that the value of the work of the Messiah was sufficient for all the world, a person must appropriate it to his or her own self in order to make it stick, if you will, to apply it to themselves. They must believe. And that's why Romans chapter 3, Paul is now writing in verse 21 and 22, and look what Paul is saying. But now he says, the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets.
Here is the righteousness of God provided now for us through Yeshua the Messiah. Then he says in verse 22, even the righteousness of God, which is by faith. Now notice that, by faith of Jesus the Messiah, by faith of Yeshua the Messiah. And then it says unto all, but it doesn't stop here. It says, and upon all them that believe, for there is no different. So the righteousness of God through the work of the Messiah is available to all. It's unto all the human race, but it is only upon, notice that, all them that believe. Out of all the human race, only all those that will believe will benefit from the work of Yeshua, the Messiah.
So, what those false teachers are doing, they are coming, and this is again, and I'm going back to our topic in 2 Peter, chapter 2. And what they are doing, you see, they deny, number one, the person of the Messiah, the Lord, and number two, the one that bought them. In other words, they do not accept the work of Yeshua, the Messiah. They do not appropriate it to their own hearts and conscience. His love is reaching towards them. His work is towards them. His death, burial, and resurrection is for them. But they deny the person and they deny the work of Yeshua, the Messiah. how many people today brothers and sisters in a world around us who heard the message of the gospel and deny that yeshua is the son of god is the messiah of israel and that he died on the tree for their justification they deny his person they deny his work and therefore it says in verse 1 see and that's the third portion of verse 1 it says here and they bring upon themselves swift destruction.
The rejection of the Messiahship of Yeshua and his work on the tree will bring upon them swift destruction that God himself is going to judge them sooner or later. But the warning is given to the believers. He says, you better take heed.
He's saying, take heed because there will be false teachers who rise among you and you must be careful to know what you listen to and who you follow after because look at the next verse now brothers and sisters in verse two according to these verses they will have many followers many will follow them it says in verse two now and many shall follow their pernicious ways and by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of in other words what he's saying here in the second verse that those false teachers apparently will have many many followers it says the word here pernicious ways that word for pernicious way is the word destructive
ways even believers who are saved and know the lord because they are not careful what they listen to and whom they listen to they don't read the scripture they are not spending time around the lord around the word and they are allowing themselves to be influenced and they follow these teachers and they end up to destroy their testimony there's no power anymore in their testimony because they are following after false teachers again i'm repeating in jeremiah chapter 23 and verse 32 look what it says behold i'm against them that prophesy false dreams says the lord and do tell them and cause my people to err by their lies in other words god's people israel also
followed after those false prophets they cause god's people to err by their false teaching by their lies and by their likeness I send them not, nor command them, therefore they shall not profit these people at all, says the Lord.
In other words, those people that are following after those, in Israel's time, false prophets end up not to benefit out of this. They're only lost. You know, I don't have to tell you, but just not too long ago here in the Toronto area, all sort of things came up in our midst and, you know, the Toronto blessings and all what we have heard and people were traveling to this place from all over the world as if the Shekinah glory rested here in Toronto. And it didn't take too long and we find ourselves that the professing testimony here in our own midst have been so divided and the people of God were scattered.
Scattered! Didn't assist, didn't help us in our testimony, in our work here. What a sad things! Because we were not careful to evaluate. Is it from the Lord?
people were falling on the ground people were barking in jesus name people were doing chicken sound in the name of jesus all kind of things as if god had been visited toronto and instead of wisely asking the question is it from the lord people have ended up to come from all over the world and it was really scattering the sheep scattering the flock and the people of god was so divided here well it is the same thing for us today beloved brothers and the same thing for them in the first century peter is warning them to be careful not to follow any teaching unless it is square with the word of god look what we
read brothers and sisters what paul said in second timothy chapter 4 listen what he says i charge you he's speaking to timothy verse 1 of 2 Timothy chapter 4 before God and the Lord Yeshua the Messiah who shall judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom preach the word be instant in season and out of season reprove, rebuke, exult with all long suffering and doctrine, here is the doctrine the teaching for the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine sound teaching but after their own lust shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears and they shall turn away their ears from the truth and shall be turned
unto fables now you know Peter wrote about the teaching the teachers who would teach false teaching but Paul wrote to Timothy not only the teachers but the people as it says here the people after their own lust shall heap to themselves teachers having itching ears you see what we really learn from here that on the one hand there will be false teachers who will come in, on the other hand the people, if they are not careful they themselves will want teachers that will each scratch their ears give them words, you know, let's talk about nice things not deal with issues let's just brush everything so make it sound very nice we'll have our own church
meeting and then we're going to finish and we're going to have a nice week and we'll come back and we will have words that are really suitable for my ear very satisfying not realizing that you know we need correction we need instruction we need encouragement and this is what these early apostles are warning and hear Peter telling in this second verse they will have many many followers and we see it beloved brothers how many followers those teachers that teach things that are not sound have even today you don't need to go too far but it's very close to us today and we must be careful not to condemn others because we are capable to do
the very same thing and we have the same nature sin nature and unless we are sound in the word we are no different than any other person now in verse 3 Peter is speaking about describing the false teachers he tells them what is the purpose why do they do it because in verse 3 he said that they are doing it through covetousness they will exploit the people of God look at this 2nd Peter 2 verse 3 and through covetousness shall they with feign words make merchandise of you whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not and their damnation slumbereth not you see now here is the motive behind it what he is really saying
that they will do what they will do through covetousness in other words the purpose behind it in other words they will do it through covetousness there is a gain for that they don't do it because they care for the sheep but they do it through covetousness whether it is covetousness for pride for position or covetousness for power or covetousness for money or covetousness for gain or for glory whatever they mean covetousness is something that we covet that we don't have that we want and if the reason of teaching is only because I will be powerful I will be wealthy I will have glory and a name for myself well that is a wrong way in
which a person who is called to serve the lord that is a wrong way to teach the word of god for that reason now the teachers according to scripture the lord says they deserve double honor they are to be taken care of they are to be respected they are to be recognized and we thank god for those who teach us and we need to respect them and to give them the honor that they deserve but that is not the motives that are not to be the motives behind it.
That's why he says, look, they will do so, verse 3, through covetousness, they will feign words. Notice this word, feign words, in verse 3. If you just jump for a moment to verse 18, it says in verse 18, for when they speak great swelling words, they will tell you all sort of things that are swelling words. In other words, they will exploit the people of God through faint words or as it says here in verse 18 great swelling words they will speak some great things as if they got the truth if they got something that you cannot find in the word of god you know you want to come to know i have some special revelation that god has showed to me and you can get it if you will just listen to what i teach you and you will be receiving what you call the special and additional blessing but you got to come to our sect to our ways not to the way that the lord will teach or the way others who teach the word of god so they're doing so according to verse three through covetousness they will with feign words make merchandise of god's people exploit god's people this is pretty sad and i just want to read another verse in thessalonian In 1 Thessalonians chapter 2, Paul wrote there.
Look at the opposite with the Apostle Paul. Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 2, verse 1, For yourself, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain, but even after that we had suffered before, and we were shamefully entreated, as you know, at Philippi, We were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention. They had a lot of opposition, Paul is saying. And then look what it says in verse 3. For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile or lying. But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak.
Not as pleasing men, but God which trieth our hearts. And then verse 5. For neither at any time we use flattering words. You know, Paul said, when we came to you, we didn't use some kind of a flattering words to try to win you after us. He says, no, we didn't use flattering words, as you know, nor a clock of covetousness. God is witness. See the opposite here? Here, Shaul, Paul, is saying, listen, when we shared with you the gospel, we didn't use all sort of words and all sort of way in order to flatter you. No. But we gave the message of the gospel as it is, and we didn't do it with guile in a tricky way.
It was simply sharing the word of God, the message of the gospel of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah.
but here's on the other end the false teachers in 2nd Peter chapter 2 verses 1 to 3 in verse 3 through covetousness shall they with feign words make merchandise of you and unfortunately even Christians who love the Lord oftentimes are so gullible and taking all sort of things you know a preacher come to town oh he got a message for me another preacher come to town and he got the message for me another teacher come and he got the message instead of focusing on the lord through his word in a local church a local assembly growing and developing is all sort of words and all kind of teachers that all around now i'm not saying
we should not listen to other teachers but what i'm saying we got to be careful and remember in the time of peter there was no radio no television no internet by the time they received that letter from peter probably days and weeks and months have passed by until they received them but already then there was these false teachers who crept in and made merchandise of the people of god and shimon peto says whose judgment is now of a long time lingereth not and their damnation slumbers not in other words the judgment that is coming upon those who teach the word of God falsely and do not teach a sound teaching they deny the Lord and
they deny his work his person his work and they are leading many in a way that God is not pleased now the next verses in verses 4 to 9 we have God saying how he's going to deal with those false teachers and he gives us a historical account in those verses he takes us back to history in fact he's taking those jewish believers hebrew messianic believers and he tells them about their own history really he's opening before them the panach and he's saying now look back at history god judged in the past and he is going to judge in the future god judged historically the past look at your history and god is going to
judge in the coming day so let's look at those verses first of all verse four the angels that sinned he began here and he said for if god spared not the angels that sinned but he cast them down to hell the word here for hell is the greek word tatraos t-a-r-t-a-r-u-s it is a section in hades in sheol it is another name of hell but it is a section in hell specifically where the fallen angels are being kept there and he's saying now in verse 4 if god spare not the angels that sin but he cast them down unto hell unto Tatraos and he delivered them into chains of darkness to be reserved unto judgment.
Here he began to speak first of all in verse 4 about the angels that fell. Now most Bible teachers take these angels that sinned in verse 4 and it takes us back to the first few verses of Genesis chapter 6. And if you remember brothers and sisters what happened in Genesis chapter 6 It says that it came to pass when men began to multiply on the face of this earth and daughters were born unto them that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair and they took them wives of all which they chose. There are two schools of teaching about these verses, verses 1 and 2.
Some believe that the daughters of men and the sons of God are the two lines, the godly line and the ungodly line, those who are descendants of Cain's line and those who are really descendants of the line of Adam's third son. His name is Seth in English, in chapter 5 and verse 3.
this is the son that replaced cain and abel abel died this is the son that replaced abel so some believe that in genesis chapter 6 we have the two lines the godly line and the ungodly line represented by the sons of god and the daughters of men but others and that is where i would understand this from scriptures that in genesis chapter 6 the sons of god has a reference to the angels that kept not their first estate when they took for themselves the daughters of men they saw that they were fair and they took them wives of all that they have chosen now how could they take wives of the daughters of men well
the words sons of god in plural is one of the titles that were given to angels you read it in job chapter 1 and verse 6 chapter 2 and verse 1 those were angels the sons of god plural and appeared in the presence of god but here those sons of god did not keep their first estate and they took human form every time when an angel appear you always see him appearing in a human form we'll read about it in genesis 19 about the two angels who went to visit Lot and they also looked like men there were two men but there were angels and here what we see that there was this corrupting of
the human race where the sons of God angels who took human flesh and they saw that the daughters of men were fair and they performed this union which brought about a terrible mixture that we read in Genesis chapter 6.
Notice what it says here in verse 3. The Lord said, immediately after we read about this, that the sons of God took the daughters of men, immediately we read that the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with men, for that he is also flesh, and his days shall be 120 years. God saw that wickedness that had happened there on this earth when these angels, who instead of keeping their first estate, they have fallen angels, that they went and they have married or committed physical relationship with the daughters of men, and what kind of a mixture came out to the surface? It says here in verse 4, there were giants in the earth in those days.
the word giant is the hebrew word for nephilim nephilim nephilim is fallen ones the mixture of this kind of union brought about a fallen creation a mixture if i would call it angelic and human mixture which is actually really it's one of the way in which satan who sought to destroy the promise of the coming of the Mashiach. He uses these fallen angels to come in to produce such a creature that will eliminate the promise of the coming of the Messiah. This is one of his evil ways in which he sought to destroy the promise of the Messiah coming who would be born of a woman.
And so that's what he sought to do. and so we read here there were giants or nephilim fallen one in those days in the earth and also after that the same became mighty men which were of all the men of renown they became giborim not mighty men for god but they became mighty men for themselves they became self-willed departed from the ways of the lord and look what beloved brothers and sisters what god is saying about the condition it says in verse 5 and god saw the wickedness of men was great on this earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was evil continually and it repented the lord that he had made men on the earth and it grieved him at his heart see god was so grieved because of this wickedness and that God have taken those fallen angels that kept not their first estate and God, he spared not the angels that sinned but he cast them down unto hell.
The word again is Tatraos and that a place, a department or compartment if you will in Hades in Greek, in Sheol it is the unseen world There is a place in which those angels have been delivered and he keep them in chains of darkness to be reserved unto judgment. Those angels that fell, that sinned, they are now kept in Tetraus, in Hades, in Sheol, waiting the day of eternal damnation, where they are going to be cast ultimately to the lake of fire. Those specific angels are already there right now, in chain, waiting the day of judgment. And by the way, we know that fallen angel is what we call demons.
Demons were active in the time of the Messiah. Demons will be active in the tribulation period. And demons, fallen angels that following Satan, are still active even today in many parts of the world, seeking to do the bidding of Satan. Satan himself is called in the scripture as an angel of light deceiving people today. He is still active.
but those angels that sin are now kept down in sheol in chain in darkness and they are reserved to the day of judgment what he's really saying he's comparing he's saying the false teachers they are teaching false teachings they will be judged just the same like those angels that god is reserving them for a day of judgment now notice what he says talking about judgment in the next verse verse 5 here is the old world in the time of noah it says in verse 5 and you notice in additional to those angels that sinned you have now the old world god spared not the old world but he saved noah the eighth person a preacher
of righteousness bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly what he's really saying those false teachers are going to get judgment in the coming day just the same like the angels who are reserved for judgment but also just the same like that old world when noah was in this world and you remember what happened at that time the text is really taking from genesis chapter 6 in verse 7 i will destroy men whom i have created from the face of this earth both men and beasts and creeping thing and the fowls of the earth for it repenteth me that i have made them but then it says in verse 8 of genesis chapter
6 but noah found grace in the eyes of the lord god spared noah but he did not spare the old world at the time of noah that sin why was it you know there was a condition brothers and sisters at the time such a wicked condition that existed in this time that demanded from god to judge this world and to deliver only eight people can you imagine only eight souls noah his wife shem ham jeffet and their wives only eight souls came on the other side to the new world but that old world god judged and noah according to verse 5 was a preacher of righteousness noah was preaching judgment is coming repent turn to
the god who loved you so much judgment is coming nobody listened the animals came two by two into the ark but the human race have rejected the god of love who loved them so much men have lived life carelessly as if nothing is going to happen in the coming day and they rejected the message and the preaching of noah in fact yeshua said in luke chapter 17 concerning noah in verse 26 he says as it was in the day of noah so it shall be in the days of the son of man they did eat and they drink they married wives and they were given in marriage until the day that noah entered into the
ark and the flood came and destroyed them all look chapter 17 verse 26 and 27 yeshua's words and yeshua knew what happened historically in the days of noah you know people just eat they drink they have married they live life as if judgment will not come they carry on you know there was nothing bad in going to eat and getting married nothing wrong with eating and drinking nothing wrong with meeting your need, going to work, carry on life, but they rejected the truth and the preaching of Noah when he said judgment is coming, turn to the God who loves you, and he's called here, brothers and sisters in verse 5 a preacher of righteousness and
you know many believe that noah preached for 120 years why they believe that he preached for 120 years because it says in genesis chapter 6 verse 3 that the lord said my spirit shall not always strive with men for that he is also flesh and his days shall be 120 years now can you imagine how long suffering god have been for 120 years you know most of us are under 90 i would say some of us are pushing about that 1991 some of us are younger there are some younger in our midst and 90 can you imagine for 120 years to preach every day by the way noach every time he nailed a nail into
the ark it was a statement i'm building an ark because judgment is coming every time he was carrying a piece of wood and bringing it and put it again building this teva in hebrew we call it teva the ark he was telling i am preparing myself for the day that the flood gonna come because judgment is coming i'm building a place of safety for myself and for my family but the people carry on they thought god is not going to fulfill what he says i don't think noah's words are correct judgment is coming and sure beloved brothers and sisters as yeshua said as it was in the day of noah he said noah enter into
the ark and the flood came and destroyed them all no one remained alive from the human race except these eight souls that have trusted god now notice that beloved brothers so he's speaking about the angels that sin in verse 4 he speaks about the world the then known world in the time of noah in verse 5 but now notice the cities of sodom and gamora he's taking them back to history in hebrew we call it he says in verse 6 and turning the cities of sodom and gamora into ashes condemn them with an overthrow making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly just look at Sodom and Gomorrah you know when we
take tours to Israel groups to Israel we bypass Sodom an area that is known as Sodom and you look and you see nothing but desert there it's right by the shore of the Dead Sea and on the western side on the Israeli side and it's totally dry you can see a lot of salt in the area because the dead see there and if you remember when God came to Lot in the person of these two angels who appeared as men in Genesis 19 when they came into the city of Sodom and Lot invited them to come into their home into his house but they didn't want to go in they said we're going to stay
outside you see the difference between abraham in chapter 18 of genesis and lot in chapter 19 of genesis to abraham house they were gladly going to visit he was a believer that was in communion with the lord but to lot house they're not gladly going to his house he was also a believer but he did not live in communion with the lord and it is so interesting beloved brothers and sisters that it is not until here second peter 2 verses 7 and 8 that we know that lot was a righteous man we always hear about him as being an ungodly man a man who were described as an unbeliever but apparently beloved brothers and sisters
lot was a righteous man look what we read here in verse 7 he delivered just lot vaxxed with the filthy conversation of the wicked verse 8 for that righteous man, tzaddik dwelling among them in seeing and hearing vaxxed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds apparently Lot was a righteous man we hear three times he was just Lot righteous man righteous soul we read about Lot apparently he was a believer but a believer who was drawn away from the Lord he was attracted to the world and its system he looked towards Sodom in the beginning if you read about it actually in Genesis chapter 13 we see that Lot looked towards
Sodom and then later on we find him moving his tent closer to sodom and then later on in chapter 19 we find him sitting in the gate of sodom that's how it starts you look towards the world and it looks kind of nice you know very attractive green grass everything looks great and then you end up to say you know what i live a little close to the world you see well i'll build my house i'm part close to the lord and part close to the world and then he finds himself sitting at the gate one of the elders of the city one of the leaders of the city and yet apparently his righteous soul
from day to day was vaxxed because of the unlawful deeds of what is known today the sodomites or in sodom there was homosexuality there was that which was contrary to the word of God and God as we have studied in Genesis chapter 2 he made male and female and he made Adam and out of his side he brought Eve built Eve and he brought to be his helpmate to love each other and to live together he made male and female but by the time we see the condition that existed at that time that demanded the judgment of God and so Lot was attracted as a believer yet attracted to the world and its system he
thought that he's not going to get involved too much and so on like we do and we fail we end up sinning dishonoring the lord you know we don't want to be too much separated unto the lord you know we'll stay a little bit closer to the world and yet we end up falling on our face and we realize oh lord i blew it again and i confess this before you and so lot have had his own life in this condition and so brothers and sisters we have here in these verses one to three the description of those false teachers but verses four to nine we have the fact that God will deal with those
false teachers as he has dealt with the angels that sin the old world and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah he dealt with them and it says in verse nine the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished.
God is able to help those that want to listen to him and want to follow after him. He's able to deliver us, to deliver his own people. But his own people have to listen to his words and to subject themselves to his will in order to be able to benefit from the deliverance of the Lord. But he reserved the unjust unto a day of judgment and unto a day of punishment and so in these nine verses brothers and sisters peter is giving the warning concerning false teachers may the lord by the grace of god may the lord help us just to be listening to that which is sound and healthy and will help us to be sound students of the word of god so it will be for the glory of god and for the blessing of ourselves
